An official statement relative to the Industrial census lias been .sent out from Washington as follows: "The Census act provides that the statistics of manufacturers may be collected by enumerators or by special agents, at the discretion of the director. He may designate certain cities, towns, or other manufacturing centers, In which the manufacturing schedule shall bo withheld from the enumerators and placed In the hands of special agents. A list of such cities and towns has been prepated, numbering in tho aggregate over a thousand, and a carw ful estimate shows that all of tho man ufacturing establishments included in the localities to be withdrawn from the enumerators can be visited and re turns from them secured, within the brief space of thirty days, by the em ployment of two thousand special agents, who will be paid by the day. The compensation it is proposed to al low them is $4 a day, except in special 'cases, but It can In no Instance exceed $6. "In the collection of manufacturing statistics, the Director proposes to utilize as far as possible tho organiza tion created for.the general enumera tion by placing 'the supervisor of cen sus of the proper district In charse by grouping the localities withdrawn, and by employing the best of the enumera tors for an additional month as special agents. "It will thus be seen that opportuni ties for the employment of men not em ployed as enumerators will bo limited, and that the amount to be earned by the special ngents Is not large. "The reasons for adopting tho system here outlined are two, namely, econ omy in expenditures and the desire to meet the wish of congress for r "quick" census." Will Not Abandon Entrance. An officer of tho Lehigh Vallev, who was Interviewed recently in reference to a statement that tho work being done by that company In Jersey City and Greenville, is Intended for pas senger traffic emphatically denied It, and said that there is no intention of abandoning tho uso of tho ipemibyl vanla's entrance Into Jersey City and of its ferries to New York and Brook lyn.
