THE SCHANTON TRIBUNE-MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 1900. I1 . l. iv v h CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NOT CHRISTIANITY Concluded from l'ngo 3. for Bin, or ulcknosa, or ilenth. Thoso uro delusions nnd utterly devoid of reality. DIseJHO Ik only bodily fear. "X leiunud," ays Mrs. Eddy, "thut sickness is un Il lusion" and that "dlsenro Is fear made manifest In tho body, whether this fe.ir takes tho form of cancer, consumption, mall-pox, or an Injured limb" (p. 425). "Sin Is a high detftto ot Insanity," und 'sickness Is nlwas hulluclnutUm" (r. 8M). "Man Is never tick," und "Illusion Is both tho sin and the (-Inner, tho dis ease and tho cause, death and dying. It Is well to bo cheerful In klckntstt; to bo hopeful Is better; hut to understand that sickness is a delusion 1 best of all" (ml 311-312). "Tumors, ul'-crx, In flammation, puln, deformed bucks, are all UMim-hhudoWH" (p. U01). "Tho Il lusion named death, slckness.und sin, ure oil thnt can be dettroyed." Tho "hu mun" body cannot elo, because it has no Ufn of Its own" (p. CI"). Mrs. Kddy gives to her pupils this In teresting formula: ' If exposure to n draught of air, while In ti state of pcr tplrutlon, Is followed by chills, dry cough, influcnru, congestive symptoms In tho lungs, or hints ot Inllammatory rheu matism, your mlnd-remcdy Is safe and sure" (p. 311). "Kcar Is the foundation of nil sickness" (p. 297). "Man Is Incapable of Mn, slcknets, and death hctico man cannot depart lrom holiness. Nor can Ool endow man with tho capacity or freedom to sin" (p. 311). Mrs. Kddy calls sin, sickness and death, "nothingness." And, yet, stranKo to hay, shu tries to euro "nothingness." An easy matter, surely, seeing thoio Is nothing to cuie. Bho frankly admits this and trks cvado Its nbsurdlty by asserting another ab surdity, namely, that sin, sickness and death belong to "the nothingness of tr ior" (pp. ::Sfi-SS0). Those uro facts about "Christian Science' 'that Judge Kwlnu forgot to mention; and the riUMUi why he suppressed them Is obvious enough. He ilther does not believe them, or elso ho Kit that such a recital would bo pro nounced ubhiird by any Intelligent audi ence. PKItVEUTS HOLY SUltll'TUIlK. It is a serious charge to make against "Christian Science" that It perverts thu meaning of Holy Scripture. Hut this chatgo Is true. Tho Hlble ttachci that bin. and temptation, and error, and sick ness, and death are potent realities; and with this Bible truth tho experience of nil ages is In harmony. "I'hrlstlun Sci-t-iico" teaches that all these aro un realities. Over and over again It asserts that "Krror is unical." Thu Hlble teach es and experience, proves that matter Is as real as mind. "Christian Science" teaches that there is no such a thing ns matter, but that "All is Mind." Mrs. Kddy says: "All is Mind. On this state ment I stand. I hold myself ready to meet ny profound thinker on this sub ject, for this statement Is sclentlllc" (p. Ul). An unintelligent, illy expressed Idealism Is tho ground work ot Airs. Eddy's system If It can bo called n sys tem. One or two samples of "Christian Sci ence" Interpretation und application of Scripture will show the men tal caliber of Its author and "dis coverer." The Apostle Paul says: "If a mail think himself to be something when he Is nothing, ho deccivelh hlm belf." On this passage "Christian Sci ence" builds the Idea of "human nothing ness" (p. Mi). The meaning of the apos tle's words is plain from tho context, and it is not ci editable either to the head or the heart to twist Scripture so as to make It teach an nbsutdlty. If possible, u still moi-o absurd meaning is attuchul by "Christian Science" to tho llrst man. Adam. The fall of Adam Is a "myth." "The htsti.ry of Adam is a dream without n dreamer" in. I"i). Adam means "er ror: tho belief of original sin; red sand stone; nothiiiRiichs" (p. 52ii). But tho definition of Adam by "ChrUtlau Sci ence" that caps the climax Is this: "Adam should bo thocght of as a dam. nn obstruction" (p. USD. What are wo to think of one who Is capable of treating the Holy Serlpturo after this fashion" These are somo of the facts of "Chris tian Science" that Judge Kwlug over looked. I have been careful to u-fer to the pages of "Science and Health," edi tion of 1S90, so that any ono Interested may verify tho Quotations. AS TO "feClHNClJ" CUIUIS. A to the cures said to bo wrought by "Christian Science," they are no more wonderful, nor are they any more dilll ciilt of explanation tl-m uic the cures effected b. mesmeilsts and hypnotists and telerathlsts. and mlnd-hcaler. Any physician knowa that theto sue certiln diseases that require no medicine, and that "bread pills" have, in many case.-, worked wonders for ccitaln patients. And the whole world knows that "Chris tian Science" never has set a broken bone, nor healed a buisted blood vcssH, nor cured a malignant cancer, by think lng about It, or by giving to it "absent treatment," or by sitting in tho room with the sufferer and endeavoring to make tho poor patient believe that the broken bone, or running sore, or malig nant cancer Is only un Illusion. It "Christian Silence" can work such wonders as Its votaries cluhn, It run not only prevent death, but It ought to raise tho dead. But Its patients die like other folk, or, rather, they uro told that death Is only nn Illusion, and that what they thought was sickness, is only a dream. There ure many so-called "Christian Scientists" who have no Idea lhat "Chris tian Science" teaches such absurdities us those that hn,o been specliled. They lovo and adoro Jesus Christ us our blesbed Savlcur. They believe In tho Holy Ghost, tho Comforter. They aru not so Insano as to reject the testimony of their senses. They believe that sick ness, and sin, and death aro all around them, and thut they are as real as Is their own existence. They know, both by oh. nervation and experience, that pain Is no illusion, but that, on tho contrary, a toothache, or a stomach-ache, or a head nulie is a very real thing. They know thut. If a man is shot thiough tho heart. or If his Jusulnr vein Is severed, or if ho loses a limb, "Christian Science" Is powerless to restore tho severed artery, or, tho severed limb, or to heal tho pleiced heart. Tho fact thut there aro devout Christians, who havo become enamored with "Christian Science" is a psycho . logical study; but, In most cases, it can be traced to tho fact that they do not . know what "Christian Science" Is, or to what Its teachings lend. When ran. .fronted with what It says about God or Christ, or tho Holy Ghost, and sin, and ( .sickness, and ileuth, they aro shocked; and no wonder! AN IRRATIONAL B-KMJSION. Many so-called "Christian Sciolists'' ore excellent people. Hut their excel lence U not due in any dcgieo to "Chris tian Science," tor "Christian Science" Is n. most Irrational delusion. It is a "Se ducing Spirit," with which It Is unwise to tamper, It ignorej u personal God. It. rejects tho Blblo doctrine of sin, und the Divine teaching concerning the person and work of the world's Redeemer. It teaches that man is not a sinner, where as the Bible teaches us that "If we say that wo have no sin, wo deceive ourselves ,,and the truth Is not In us." A child can see that If wo uro not sinners wc do not neod a Saviour. Yet, Jesus fays , that His mixtion is "to seek und to save the lost." The ungel said: "Thou Shalt cull His name Jesus, for Ho shall save His people from their sins." But "Chris tian Science" says that this la falso, for , the reason that there Is no such thln-j us sin from which to bo saved. Thus we . '.see that In "Christian Sclnnco" there Is up room for the Bible doctrine of huroj, J jooempiion turougn jeius unrisi, our ' Lord. No sin I Therefore It Is absurd ; . to repent of our sins, or to confess our ' lus, or to ask Qod to forjilve our sins, "or, to believe that Jesus Christ Is the . Saviour of sinners'. This may appear ' shocking to somo "Chrlstlun Scientists," but It Is, confessedly, the doctrine of ''Christian Science" at embodied la Its text-book. It If bo a Gospel at nil It Is not thu Gospel of our Lord and Saviour .Icsus Christ; It Is unother gospel, und those who preach It occupy a moat un cus lablc portion. Its text-book Is a Jumblo of unmeaning phrases. Its claims uro most ubstinl; und Its pretentious reasonlng!i aro tho nulnlessonee f non sense. Thcso aro "facts" ubout "Chris tian Sclcnco" that thoso who heard or read Judgo Kwlng's plausible oration will do well to ponder. It has been said that with two exceptions, "Christians Sci ence" is all right. These exceptions arc: Klrst. It Is not science, and second, It Is not Christian. The value of this crlil clsm lies In tho fact th.il it expresses tho exact truth. An Extract from Judge Swing's Lec ture, Published by Bequest. In connection with Or. McLeod's ser mon, the following extract from a leu lure delivered by Judge Ewlng In dy nicuse on Dec. S has interest. We print it at the request of David N. IIo Kee, reader In the Christian Scicno church: Doubtless there arc many points In volved In Christian belief und condui-l, respecting which you and Christian Sci entists are In perfect accord; a brief rcl crencc to tbeso will. I think, bring us a little closer together, possibly Inspire us, ut least, to prosecute the Inquiry ot the lieur In the pleasing nssuruncu that wc uio equally earnest and honest In our search after the ultimate good a knowl edge of God "Whom to know aiU'ht is llfo everlasting." 1 certainly am safo in assuming thut you are in fuor of whatever makes men and women better, happier, purer, jnoro loving und lovable? So qie wc. You will aid whatever will lesson the burdens and sr.rrows of men; whatever will banish superstition and minimize tear? So will we. You, 1 urn sure, will encourage whatever will destroy avarice, selfishness and lust; whatever will exult manhood, sanctify tho home, enthrone virtue, ulfoc Hon, sympathy und love? So will we. You, 1 trust, bellevo In ono God nnd Father of all. Infinite In wisdom, Justice, goodness, m-rcy, truth, und love a div ine, spiritual, incorporeal Intelligence, without "forms or parts, beginning of days or end of years;" who illls all space; Is omnipresent and omniscient; who made all that was made nnd pro nounced It good. You believe In, love, worship und adore such a God? So do we. You believe In Jesus Christ, tho only begotten Son of God, who taught In the temple; preached the gospel", heulcd the sick; made the lamo to walk; gave sight to the blind, hearing to tho deal, puilty to the sinful; was crucified, burled, nnd on thu third day arose triumphant over death, and with tho radiant splen dors of tho trnnsllguratlon, spanned tho heavens with a bow of promise, and dH pelled forevlr the shadows of earth by the demonstrated truth of life Immortal ns God. You believe In this dear, compassionate, loving, healing Christ as your Lord, your Saviour, your exemplar? So do we. You believe the Bible Is tho divinely Inspired revelation of God to man? So do we. You believe the Ten Commandments are God's laws of requirement and -restriction, to bo resolutely nnd absoluttly obeyed, ono not less than another? So do we. You believe that prayer is both a prlvllego und a duty? So do we. You bellevo In the great commundment,"Thou shalt love tho Lord thy God with till thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind:" and the second, which Is like unto It, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself?" So do we. Thus It Is found that wc arc substan tially In accord upon tho essential rc quliemonts of the religion of Christ as you understand It. And Is this not suf ficient to establish the conclusion that we should not antagonize each other, even If we have different ways of reach ing the samo Omnipotent God, we In com mon profess to love?
