Changes That Went Into Effect Yesterday on Lehigh Valley Road. More miW of new railroad were built durlnp 1MI9 than In any previous year since 1890, when 6,070 miles of line wet completed. Since Jan. 1 last, no less thnn 4,500 miles of track have been laid in the United States on ::12 lines in 41 states and territories. The Railway Age says: In Pennsylvania 1S9.C5 miles have been laid on .It! lines: In Ohio, 67.31' miles on clRht lines: In West Vir ginia, S2.5 miles, on six lines. The tlgures cover trncklaylnjr only and do not Include n large amount of completed grade, on which track will not be laid until next spring. Tho only states not represented In tho tlgures on construction are New Hampshire, lihnde Island, Delaware, Nevada und Kouth Dakota. There are several lines under construction in South Dakota. The great agricultural state of Iowa, in which there has been little railway building for the ten years previous to 1899, stands at the head of the list with CS2 miles of new road. Tho work in this state has been carried on almost exclusively In the interest of large sys tems, such as the Chicago and North western, Illinois Central. Chicago, Mil waukee and St. l'.uil, Minneapolis and St. Inuls. and Wabash. Minnesota comes next with 369 miles to her credit, and a good share of the mileage in this state has likewise been built by the Chicago and Northwestern, although the Great Northern and Minneapolis and St. Louis have added important extensions. Arkansas is next, with 270 miles of new road, over one-half of which has been built by the Choctow, Oklahoma and iSulf. While there have been large additions in tho southern, northern anil middle western states, the scene of greatest activity has been west of tho Missis sippi river, the twenty states so located in which new mileage Is reported con tributing L'.r.Dl miles, consldeiably more than one-half of the total of tho entire country. The notabl? fact about the work of the past year Is that there has been comparatively little building by new companies, more than three-quarters of the new mileage having been built by or In tho Interest of existing lines. The Chicago and Northwestern has built Z",Vi miles, the Chicago. Mil waukee and St. I'aul, 9S miles, thn Northern Pacific 93 miles In the I'tilted Statts and 29 miles In Canada, the Chi cago. Hock Island and Pacific 82 miles, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Ke 1'iO miles, the Illinois Central 190 miles, tho Burlington systi m 8rt miles, the Louis ville and Nashville 74 miles, the Sea board Air" Line over 100 miles. th. Oreat Northern 74 miles and the Choc taw, Oklahoma and Oulf 162 miles. These are only a frw Instances, many other important systems having udded less mileage. The longest continuous line built Is the extension of the Choctaw, Okla homa and litllf, ftoin Howe, I. T to Llttln Rock. Atk., Hi.!. 4 miles, and the next longest line is tho extension of tho Illinois Central from J-'oit Dodge, lu to Omaha, Hil miles. The Minne apolis and Si. Louis Is building 133 miles from New I'lm. Minn., to Storm Lake, In., and most of tho track has been laid. One of the lines built by the Chicago and Northwestern is 119 miles In length, from Hurt, la., to Vesta. Minn. Incomplete returns fioin Canada and Mexico show 470 miles of new lno In. Canada and 233 miles in Mexico. D., L. & W. Board for Today. Tho Delaware. Raf ter, of this city, who Is a member of tho Eighteenth Infantry, now doing duty in the Philippines, copies of the Manila Tribune, "an exponent of true Americanism." It Is printed In Eng lish and Is modelled on American newspaper lines. It proudly boasts that It la tho only paper in Manila that employs a sketch artist. It has a carefully edited sporting de partment and a depattmenl for golf which indicates thnt the popular Scotch game has obtulned a firm foot hold In Uncle Sam's far castirn pos sessions. The paper Is evidently is sued almost exclusively for the bene fit of the Americans In Manila and the sin rounding country, for It is made up hugely of American news.
