The shorts took alarm from yesterday's rise and the continued up. ward tendency this morning und cov ered rather extensive lines. London market before tho opening here bought iv considerable amount In this market. Tho sentimental effect of this buying was even more pronounced than the di rect demand for stocks. The recovery in French rentes in Paris also had a stimulating effect, und part of Lon don's buying of Americans was re ported to bo for continental account. Taken nil In nil there was sulllclent du 111 und fur stocks to run tho forenoon business up to within 20,000 shares of yesterday's total transactions and con siderably over the total for noma days of tills week. Tho public showed it self still coy about coming forward and bull operators In consequence pro ceeded to take their profits on the ad vance. Tho stocks which advanced jestciday and the day before were es pecially affected and In a number of cases were carried below last ntzht'a level.
