The policy of tlio new officials of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western company to dispone of their unoccupied land In this city, has caused quite a stir among real estate men the past few days. The deal whereby the Hound woods site becomes tho property of Hon. W. V. Watson, and the negotia tions by another syndicate for tho pur chase of the land fronting on North Main avenue In the Twenty-first word will mean a great deal to the city of Scranton. In Epenklng of tho matter yesterday. Superintendent Lnotnls stated to a Tribune man that be believed the hold Ins of the land so many years had Im peded the growth of Scranton, and that In offering' tho vnrlcus plot throughout tho city for sale, no stipulated price has been set, but the highest bidders will be considered. Several prominent renl estate men called at Mr. Loomls' office yesterday and opened negotiations, but nothing was done In the way of closirg nny deals. Some Important purchases may bo expected within a few days. Tho names of the parties who are negotiating for the North Main avenue properly could not bo learned, but It Is understood they are Scranton men. CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE. Mr. Fleitz says the Judgo will not be here In person to manage his campaign for supreme court Judge, but that he will have a force of work ers on hand from all over tho state. None of tho other aspirants has en gaged headquarters and Archibald's sboutr-rs expect to have everything their own way. The judge's friends here Insist that he already has mora than enough pledged delegates to nom inate him and that he Is a sure-winner. They profess to have no fear of the candidacy of former Attorney Gen eral Palmer, of Wllkes-Harre, who has been endorsed by the Luzerne county bar. Palmer could not be elected n state delegate for Quay In tho fight for state chairman In 1S93 and he was defeated for delegate at the recent pri maries." SERIOUS CHARGE THIS. Controllers at tho Instigation of Mr. Walsh Take tho Matter Out of the Hands of tho Committee nnd Dls poso of tho Matter with a Motion to Re-ongago All Janitors at Pres ent Salorles Annual Statement of the District's Finances Other Business Transacted by tho Board. Another surprise party took place at the board of control meeting last night, when the hiring of Janitors was taken out of tho hands of the high nnd training school and building commit tees nnd all the present Janitors re employed at the salaries fixed last year. Mr. Walsh, who has quit his vacillat ing tactics and gone unreservedly In to the ranks of tho nntl-relgnlng fac tion, sprang the surprise. He Is a member of the building committee, but not what might be called an Insider. At the last meeting of the committee a report on Janitors was prepared, but for some reason or another It was not presented Inst night. Neither did tho high and training school committee make any report on tho matter of Jani tor, although It was looked for. When both these committees had re ported last night nnd there was no reference to Janitors made, Mr. Walsh arose and asked what had become of tho building committee's report on Jan itors. President Davis looked to Mr. Shires, chairman of tho building committee, for a response, but Mr. Shires simply nodded his head and said: "We havo nothing else to report, sir." Mr. Walsh thereupon moved that the board take up the matter of hiring Janitors. Mr, Schwass whs the only member to vote against It, MR. JAYNE'S ARGUMENT. Mr. Jayne argued that the matter should be left in tho hands of the committee. Mr. Roche admitted that a report had been prepared, but a ma jority of the committee just previous to the meeting Instructed the chairman not to present it. "It's a poor kind of a man that hasn't a mind of his own," added Mr. Roche. Mr. Shires said that the committee had taken no final nctlon. It dis cussed the question of Janitors nnd bad nbout concluded to raise some of the snlarles, but no complete report had been prepared. "Yes, and you tnlked about ousting some of them, too, didn't you?" re marked Mr. Walsh. "There wouldn't be any great crime In that." quoth Mr. Roche. "I believe Mr. Walsh did that very thing In his ward not long ago." "I did, but T wa? justified In doing It," rejoined Mr. Walsh. Mr. Shires said: "We did not talk of ousting nny Janitors. I ehKlenge Mr. Walsh to name one that we talked of ousting." "I'll do that mine," said Mr. Walsh. "Max Phillips, of No. 3, and Mrs. Kal Illle, of Nq. .10. There's two for you." Mr. Shires did not deign n reply. A motion was then made by Mr. Walsh, seconded by Mr. Lnngnn, that all the janitors In the employ of tho board be re-engaged. Mr. Barker amended It by the addition of "at the same sal aries as last year." Mr. Walsh wanted to make an exception of No. 3 building but there was such a protest from nil sides against making any exceptions that he did not insist on the exception. The motion carried by the following vote: Ayes Messrs. Francols,t"0'Malloy, Casey, Zeidlcr, May, Walsh, Jennings, Schrlefer, Barker, Lungnn, Leonard 11. Nays Messrs. There havo been many absurd propo sitions In municipal matters from this same source but if thers was ever a fool proposition proposed, this propo sition Is that proposition, as the only Foxy Qulller would say. Look nt it! The flro department at present is composed of tlxteen companies. "Those who havo given up hope of reorganiz ing the present department nnd are drafting an ordinance providing for its conversion Into unpaid department" propose to reduce the number of com panies to seven. THIS IS HOW. This Is how they would do It: The Cumberland and Liberty com panies of Providence ami the General Phlnneys of Green Itldge are to !) dis banded. That would leave nil the ter ritory, pay, from Carbon street to thio city line nt Dickson, and from the Notch to Petersburg, to be lirotected by two companies composed of six men. The West Side from Tripp park to the city lrne nt the Hellevuo breaker and from the river to the toll-gate on the West mountnln, with its lumber mills, breakers, factories, etc., is to bo left to tho care of one company, the Franklins, the Columlnas and Eagles being done away with. Hut listen to this: The South Side with Its four big wards, and a territory as extensive as an average city and a wealth of mills and factories that possibly no other suburb of a city In the country can compare with. Is to have Its scanty three companies reduced to one. If one will run his mind's eye along tho line of Plttston avenue from the Roar ing Lrook bridge to tho city line at tho top of Mlnooka hill (at the one end of which Is a rteel mill, and, nt the oth er, a silk factory) be can gain some lda of tho rurpasslng beauty of tho scheme of "those who have given up hope of reorganizing etc." In dealing with tho central city, in which arc included the Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Sixteenth and Seventeenth wards, "those who have given up, etc.," evidence lucid intervals. The Crystal, Phoenix and Hook and Ladder companies are to be combined Into one and with the aid of th Reliefs up in Petersburg and the Npy Augs, are ex ported to care for all the valuable prop erties comprised within the limits of the wards enumerated. This isn't st bad but It Is by no means to be seri ously considered for a moment. Any scheme which contemplates disturbing the rhoenlx Chemical company dies nbornln'. THE GRAND JOKE. Rut the grand joke of tho wiible mat ter Is that after all this thinness would be carried Into effect the city would be saved all of five thousand, three hun dred and sixty dollars and some odd cents, or five times more thnn the ex tras on the Cumberland hose houi.e cost.
