Tho Ameer of Afghanistan has been ordered by his doctors to take exercise, and he has ptobnbly discovered the easiest way of taking It that was over thought of. The nmeer Is getting: fat, nnd has been suffering1 from Indiges tion, and that Is why he has got to take exercise. He has ordered from a famous rnr-rlogo-maklng llrm of Oxford street, n. peculiar vehicle, for exercising1 pur poses. The carriage has a light body and Is propelled by an arrrangement of bicycle wheels from the rear. Two stalwart Afghans sit on saddles over these wheels and pedal with ull their might to drive the fat king over the terrible roads of Afghanistan. When the ameet feels inclined to take exer cise a little more violent than merely sitting down In the carriage ho does so by poshing two pedals at ranged In front of him In this wny he can add about half a nnall boy's power to tho efforts of tho stalwart Afghans pedal ing away beh.nd him. The carriage Is a handsome one nnd the body Is pat terned like an old English Georgian phaeton It Is fitted with silk cushions, rather luxuriously. Besides the carriage for his personal use the ameer has had another built for the use of members of his harem. The carriages have cost $1,000 each and are rapable of maintaining a speed of twelve miles an hour. Tt will be a relief to everybody at Cabul, the capital of Afghanistan, if tho ameer's health should improve. In his present state of ill-temper he Is very apt to cut off people's heads. He was a great Foldler In his day and Is a very capable monarch, but his tem per has lately been very uncertain. Some time ago he had a bad toothache, nnd the English dentist who nccepted nn Invitation to go to Cabul and pull It otu felt oiy nervous until he had secured the tooth and got out of the country. Tho character of the trading In stocks was much con fused throughout todays short utmlon of tho exchange. There were points of 6g giesslvo stiength which encouraged tho uuilntcnatico of prices hut tho certainty of nn unavoidable) bank statement en couraged the continuance of prollt taking In some of the stocks which havo recent ly advanced several points In price. Tho publication of tho hunk statement the whole n.arket sold oil and net gulns were preserved In only a few cases. Tho liquidation was by no moans heavy and tho hears covered short contracts at the decline, causing a rally from tho low point. Tho denials of tho reported ulll nnui between l'enns) lvunla and Now York Central led to decline In thoso stocks, but the amount of selling was re markably small. Tho bank statement on Its face prevents an oMrnordlnary con dition of affutra. It is almost unprece dented to huvo cash reserves down to within a little over $3,000,000 of the 25 per cent, required by law, at this tlmo of j car. Yet tho banks expanded their loans during tho week r.carly $7,000,1(4 when they were already at the highest llgucr on record last week, Tho con clusion Is unavoidable that tha. banking authorities see prompt rellet Irf certain prospect. In fact, the casing tendency of money during tho latter part of tho week shows that relief Is already at hand. It comes In Inrgo part from the rcleaso for the disbursement of semi-annual obligations. It Is also taken Into consideration that Interior points are bet ter supplied with money than ever be fore so that tho conviction Is held In banking circles that tightness In the New ork money market will bting funds from Interior points to New York, Total sales, 2SJ.100 shares. Uy Carrlrgton & Cusack. Now York, July 8. The week which was shortened by tho holldais, has shown somewhat of on erratic market, with a general tendency towards higher prices. The Standbtd stocks, especially Pennsyl vania and New York Central, being the features of tho trading. We havo pointed out In this column often tho merits of IVnnsjlvnnla, that It Is to a certain ex tent a matter of satisfaction to us to feel that Its merits are becoming appreciated by tho public -it large. Whllo It has had a fair advance, Its Intrinsic worth should make It sell much higher. Mr. J. P. Morgan 1 especially bullish on the sit uation and this In Itself means a great deal. Wo do not seo the wisdom to ad vise you to go short stock at this time, believing that jou will make a turn of 1 or 2 per cent when the cream of tho speculation will be fcui'd upon the bull side of tho market. Steel Issues are tho best of this class. American Steol and Wire. A Process That Is Apparently Des tined to Bo a Success. From the Boston Transcript. Georbo Jzamboard, who has been ex perimenting In Pat Is with tho Roent gen rays, In tho hope of adapting tbem to commercial use in tho printing In dustry, announces that he has succeed ed In producing a machine for the pur pose. Ho reasoned that If the X-rays would pentrato oaken logs they ought to peneiato piles of paper, and that as photogiaps could bo taken with X-rnys It ought to bo possible to reproduce a picture of printing through uveiy sheet of a pile of paper. The Invention Is so far matured thnt M. Izamboard Is able to expose a pile of paper be tween two Ciookes tubes and print both sides of nil the sheets In the pile at tho same time. He can also placo a teiles of piles of raper around a Crookes tube, maklnir use of tho X rays by tadlatlng them from a center. It was suggested many years ago that the printing of the future would be done by electilclty, operating, not on single sheets, but on all sheets of a pile at the same Instant. Various inventions have made some approach to n solution of the problem, hut none of them has been successful In producing satisfactory printing. M. Izambard's fltst success was obtained by sensitizing the paper, on the sldo that was to bo printed, with a gela-tlno-bromlde emulsion, such as is com monly used in photography. A pile or block of paper thus prepared was placed In a position of exposuro to the X-rays. On top of the paper was placed a copy of tho thing to be print ed. This copy being proof to the X rays, in a thrice the thing was done, and on developing the pile of paper the inventor found a copy clearly printed on each sheet. To print In this manner it .Is necessary that tho copy or original 'hall be nearly Impervious to tho Roentgen rays, and that It shall be placed between tho Crookes tubo and the pile, where the lays may be directed to It. Tho copy la preferably first printed or written In what Is called radio graphic or X-ray proof ink, composed Exchange. FOR RENT MAAAMAfi FOR RENT BACHELOR'S APART monts, No. B16 Spruce street. A few t 'conds' exposuie Is suinclent to effect the printing through the entire pile of paper, but it Is nt first Invisible and requires to be devel oped or fixed, after the method of a photogiapher. The piles of exposed sheets are trundled Into a red-light room und suspended In vats, whero the developing and fixing liquids are applied. Rinsing and doing follow, and the Intter may be huirlcd by a mechtnlenl means. It Is npparent that the process Is really a, sort of a whole sale method of photogtaphy with the X-iajs and Is printing only In tho photographic sense of the term. Tho Inventor admits that there la a diffi culty In pilntlng on ono sldo only nt the paper, owing to the tendency of the print to show through on tho re vet se side He propores to overcome this by sensitising tho paper In stilpes, printing the lines on tho stilpes and causing the lines on one side of tho paper to fall opposite tho spaces be tvveen the stripes on tho other side. The X-ray proof ink used Is made In part of finely divided metallic or cnl cerous powder. Uronze, copper, white lead or white zinc may be used. Alcohol in Sticks. A new Invention of great Importaneo has just been patented by a Gcrmun chomlst. Julius Norden, of Aldenhoven. Germany. Ho has succeeded hi harden ing alcohol until It becomes a solid mahs This will Inturo a very much greater poularlty for the employment of alcohol It now comrs in small cylindrical pieces, packed In patent tin boxes, that can bo used for cooking, lightning heating and the various uses of everyday life. Tho solidified alcohol burns without n wick, can bo blown out after use, and then hardens again within n minute. The danger of explosion Is absolutely done away vvllh. and tho neat little tin package, with Its stick of alcohol, Is al ways ready for use in tho kitchen or bed room, on tho toilet tablo er under tho milk pot, on the road or In tho Hold, ns a night lamp or going upstairs at night Philadelphia Record, SITUATIONS WANTED YOUNG MAN WISHES POSITION AS driver on light delivery wagon.
