New York, May IC Tho tdock market opened with a cunttnuaticci of the upward movement which was In forco yestorduy. Ycstet day's shurp advance brought in a inodcrato volume of buying orders to tho commission houses, widen were put In at tho opening. There seems to havo been also considerable enthusiasm awakened In the American department ot tho London markot by the samo In terest. The international stocks wcro bid up thero boforo tho opening hero and tho nrbirtrago brokers promptly bid them up to a parity here. It soon becamo apparent, howover, thut tho bull parly wuio no more prepared to muko exten sive commitments on tho evo of a holiday than the bears nnd tho activity Boon came to a standstill. By Carrlngton & Cusnck. New York, May IC The market opened fairly strong on a general ndvanco In London and strength In the Traction stocks, following tho passago of the amended Ford bill, which gave a firmer tone to tho whole list. There appeared to bo a. fair demand for most of the ac tive stocks, some of which seemed to bo for tho long account. London was a fair buyer ot its specialties, and the early market promised a better condition. After the first hour, however, dullness set In, which encouraged renewed selling by tho ulrcady aggressive short Interest and this. In connection with tho sharp breuk In Steel and Wire, Consolidated Gas and Tobacco, unsettled tho general list to such nn extent to bring about a weak condition toward tho close, Tho decllno In wheat In Chlcugo, notwithstanding tho tremendous volume of bad crop reports did something to strengthen tho Grang ers but the market teems to lack snap entirely and tho bears at the moment seem to bo completely In tho control. Steel and Wlro was under tho hammer pxittty mudh all day rallying feebly from around CO but no time showing any marked strength. Manhattan Hallway broko sharply during the middle of the day on execution of market orders by a prominent bear broker. Tho reduction of per cent, in tho Consolidated Gus divi dend wns not as radical as had been ex pected by tho street, ond on Its publica tion the stock rallied feebly. The crop reports wcro considerably better today, tho weather throughout tho wholo west was reported favorable, and thero scenn to be an opinion that while spring wheat is much retarded It Is not too late even yet to recuperate a marked degree. Tho feature around 2 p. m. In tho stock mar ket waa a bear raid of nbout 2 points in Sugar, duo to room shorts and tho im patience of holders, who aro getting out on tho belief that the longs promised on Monday, and tho fact that there will bo no business, virtually from tonight until Wednesday morning had a great deal to do with tho action of the markot today ond wo think that no decided movement other than fractional changes need be looked for until over the holi days. Tho eloso was somewhat irregu lar but fairly strong on a recovery en gineered against the shorts who bought freely to close contracts.
