Railroaders Give Testimony Regard
ing the Ararat Shooting.
An Interesting time was hail at Al
dornum Jones' olllcc yesterday after
noon at 5 o'clock, when testimony was
taken regarding the recent Ararat
shooting of the robbers who stormed
the Maylleld power house of the trni:
tlon company. Thn Delaware and Hud
son crews of Conductor Slgmund ltob
tiliis and the Ontario and Western crew
of Conductor Thomas Morgan were
present.
The testimony was substantially the
same as that published In the news
papers at the time of the tragedy. The
ludicrous features were In the efforts
of the men to get glory and bravery
out of the affair. Some of the de
tails related were minute enough to
satisfy the most exacting cross-examiner.
Some of the witnesses accused
each other of running away, hiding
In the locomotive tank and lying down
In the cab to avoid the bullets.

stroke as to bo able to bo out.
Edward Kelly spent yesterday In

Julius Moses was In Scranton yester
day. The effort to form a military com
pany here has been abandoned.
M. J. Oliver is visiting his parents

Mr. and Mrs. A. Horry have returned
from the metropolis.

Mannerchor attended the Gorman's

James Coleman, of the East Side,
employed by tho Dolph Coal company
as a teamster, met with a series acci
dent yesterday morning, Coleman was
driving Into tho yard of Michael Bar
rett when the wheel struck an obstruc
tion, throwing Coleman to the ground.
The team did not stop and tho wheels
of the heavily loaded wagon passed
over his body and he was badly crush
ed. The Dolph Coal company ambu
lance conveyed the Injured man to the
Lackawanna hospital nt Scranton.
Miss Lizzie Williams returned Wed
nesday from a short visit with her
cousin, Miss Ethel Vcsslek,.of Jermyn.
The Riverside breaker and mine will
bt put In operation Monday, May 22.
Miners who desire chambers will make
application at the company olllco on
Saturday, the 20th. The Riverside col
liery has been Idle nearly a year. The
burned breaker has been rebuilt and
new and Improved machinery with
many labor saving devices has been
Installed. The breaker has been run
and thoroughly tested under tho super
vision of Manager Dr. J. N. Rice and
the breaker now Is considered one of
the model ones of the valley.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Swingle and
Mr. Thomas Glover are at Moscow to
day to attend the wedding of Fred
Turner, of New York, and Miss Bessie
1'yle. of Moscow,

zens were called to Scranton yester
day on the Langstaff-Kelly contest.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Peck, of Car
bondale, are visiting the former's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Peck, of Main

The Delaware and Hudson Grassy
Island now has a twenty-six ton loco
motive to ply between the shaft and
the new Klondike breaker. It Is numed
"Cuba." The smaller locomotive here
tofore used was named ."Porto Rico."
It will be removed to the Coal Brook
colliery of the Delaware and Hudson at
Carbondale.
C. B. Sherer, of Blakely, has accept
ed a position as electrician with Mus
sel & Lewis, of Wllkcs-Barrc. This
speaks well for Mr. Sherer, who has
been engaged in wiring many resi
dences and business places in town,
and he will be missed.

Thomas Welby, a miner employed In
the Arehbnld mine, was Injured about
tho head on Tuesday by a fall of coal.
Mrs. William Marsh, a much re
spected lady of this place, died at her
home on Storrs street on Wednesday
afternoon. Deceased was tho daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Williams,
of this place, and is survived by a hus
band and four small children. Tho
funeral will occur this afternoon at 2.30
o'clock. Services will be held at the
house by tho Rev. Dr. II. II. Harris.
Burial will be made in the Forest Homo
cemetery.

effected an entrance by prying open a

colliery were paid yesterday.
Archbald, tho little son of Mr, and
Mrs. Alexander Frew, of Blakely, died
yesterday at 12 o'clock, after a brief
illness of pneumonia) Ho was three
years old and was a bright nnd In
telligent little fellow. The funeral an
nouncement will bo made later.
Miss Alice Evans, of West Scran
ton, visited relatives In town Wednes
day. Mrs. Mary J. Hughes and Mrs. Annie
Jones arc still conllncd to their homes
from the effects of the luiuries they
received In the street car accident at
Providence, May 7. Mrs. Hughes'
back was severely hurt and Mrs. Jones
had her ankle broken.
A. M. Clark, of Providence, has taken
possession of tho Eagle hotel, at the
corner of Lackawanna nnd Delaware
streets.
Oeorge Twaddle, a member of the
Eleventh regiment, U. S. V has re
turned from Porto Rico to his home
here.
The celebrated Welsh singers will
give a concert in tho Congregational
church tomorrow evening under the
auspices of the members of tho Con
gregational church. This will bo the
last opportunity to hear tho famous
singers, as they intend to return to
Wales In a short time. The mice of

Sheriff Gregory has advertised for
sale on Saturday, June 10, 1899, at the
court house, In Tunkhannock borough,
the real estate, charter, franchise,
privileges, rights and property of every
kind belonging to the Tunkhannock
Eleetrlo Light, Heat and Power com
pany, Tho company was organized
some two years ago and was mort
gaged for $13,00U, and bonds were Is
sued on the mortgage with tho Lacka
wanna Trust and Safo company, of
Scranton, as tiustco. The plant was
not as successful as the promoters ex
pected and has failed to pay expenses,
The Interest on the bonds becamo due
and was not paid and foreclosure pro
ceedings were started by the bond
holders, with a view of getting posses
sion of tho plant. Judgment was ob
tained In these proceedings at last
tarm of court and execution Issued and
tho sale advertised, as stated above,
for June 10, The plant was construct
ed cheaply and never gave satisfactory
service, and to that cause may be re
ferred the lack of patronage which
