Hustiuehnnna, May 2. rctcr Crandall, nf tho Smokv Hollow section, was a few days since on his way home, when he met with a peculiar adventure. He had a horse und buckboard, and was armed with a tide. While Jogging along he heard a noise In thn bushes and stopped to Investigate. A short search revealed two wild kittens playing. Thinking he would like to capture them alive. Crandall tried to seize them, hut they ran away. Crandall ptarted In pursuit, throwing aside his rifle as ho tan. Ho succeeded In heading off one of the" kltteii3 toward tho roan, when he heard h crash behind him followed by an angry growl. Turning, ho beheld to his horror the mother of the kittens. All thoughts of the kittens vanished; Crandall thought only of his own safely. He ran for tho road and reached It Just In tlmc'to see his horse make a mad dash up the road. His only chance now was a tree, and fortunately he "shinned" up one that large enough to sustain his weight. Tho wild-cat made no attempt to reach Crandall, but stood howllntr and screaming at the base of the tree. Crandall was now unrry that he threw away his rifle. To add to his distress, smoke began to fill the air, and he realized that a forest lire was approaching. I'resently burned leaves nnd cinders fell Into the tree, but Crandall could stand It no longer. The cat and !,cr kittens were underneath tho tree, where the smoke was not so thick. Opening his pocket-knife he dld dovn tho trees landed safely and started to run. He would have escaped as tho wildcat followed In a slow, half-hearted way, but the stumbled and fell, on Ills rifle and when tho cat came up he was ready for her. One shot finished her, and he carried the kittens home In triumph THE EAGEN-SHEW CASE It is understood that the state board of pardons will today take action In the matter of commuting the death sentences of Egon and Shew to Im prisonment for life. A petition signed by 2,000 citizens of Susquehanna county together v 1th letters from sixty-three postmasters and forty-flve justices of the peace, has been filed, asking that the board do not interfere with the death sentence of the condemned men. It Is quite generally believed that tho men will suffer the death penalty. NEWS NOTES. A man may go through the Niagara whli Ipool without ii bar'l, but let him try the pool of politics, and as he goes under you can hear him yell louder than a saw in a stave mill. It bus been remarked that the Lord wasted man when He made the men wlin take a paper five or six years and never pay a cent, and then order the postmaster to send It back. Heaven helps those who do not help themselves. .Sometimes It rains and washes the streets of Scranton. Hablos are tho salt of the earth. Ladles' Homo Journal. The shareholders of the defunct Sus quehanna shirt factory have resolved to sell tho machinery. Thus, what promised to be a flourishing Industry, Is knocked hlgher'n the kite of tho lately lamented Mr. Gllrcy. The usual spring dissolutions are an nounced. Several Susquehanna couples have ngroed to disagree, and have gone out in a wicked and a weary world, disappointed mlsmates. If Governor Stone signs the Erie bonus bill, Susquehanna county will tecolvp $7,000 annually from It. A Blnghamton business man pre dicts that within two years the Blng hamton street railroad will be extend ing to Hallstcud, Great Bend nnd Sus quehanna. Important If true. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM. Sevengalla's street performance of mind reading yesterday afternoon cre ated unusual Interest In the circles whore admiration for the occult pre dominates, and long before the hour that the committee hail at ranged to make experiments an immense crowd gathered at the Academy of Music to witness the start. The Vjommlttee se lected included W. T. O'Brien, W. S. Holbcrt, John Cunnil'f, J. D. Keator and T. Owen Charles. According to previous arrangement the members of the committee were given an opportunity to hide any ar ticle they saw (it and without jpeak Ing to anyone Sevengalla agreed to find the hidden object. They selected two visiting cards and took their places In a carriage, while Sevengalla remained at the Academy, and were driven to City hall, where the cards were en closed In a bag and placed in tho desk of Mr. Hatton, Mayor Molr's private secretary. Upon the return of the committee to the Academy Sevengalla. was blindfolded and placed upon tho driver's box beside Mr. Charles. No word had been spoken up to this time and as Sevengalla grasped the reins the crowd stood) breathless and expect ant. Without hesitation, however, the mind reader guided the team to city hall, leaped from the box and hurried up the steps followed by the commit tee and did not pause until the desk containing the cards was reached. The experiment proved a successful .test of mental telepathy and astonished the skeptical witnesses of the remarkabla feat. Last night Sevengalla gavo another of his marvelous exhibitions at the Academy of Music. He will repeat It this afternoon und evening. Special Matinee Today. Chauncey Olcott, the sweetest singer on the stage and one of the most pop ular matinee Idols now before the theater-going public, will present his lat est and greatest sucess, "A Romance of Athlone," at a special matinee to be given at the Lyceum this afternoon. Mr. Olcntt's matinee will undoubtedly be largely attended by the ladles aiui children, as he lm3 always been a prime favorite with the fair sex and the lit' tie ones. Dan'l Sully Coming. A few years ago Mr. Sully put asldo this great com edy to produce dramas, but he has had so many requests for the "Corner Grocer j'," that he has derided to make one more tour of the country with tho play that made him fame and fortune. Mr. Sully made a run of 1G0 nights In New York city with this play. The New York press, at the time of Its first presentation, styled It the funniest show on earth and It has been known ns that ever since. Mr. Sully will be seen In his favorlto character of "Daddy Nolan." His support Is excel lent and Is composed of some of the best people In the profession. There wilt be several clever specialties, and to add strength to tho performance the "Empire Quartette" has been engaged as a special feature. The engagement Is for three nights and two matinees, at Academy of Music, commencing Thursday, May 4. PEOKVILLE. An exciting runaway took place on the East Side yesterday afternoon. By Associated Press. New York, May 2. Stock prices today ranged over a wide radius and ended with good gains for tho day. A considerable advance, ranging from 1 to 4 points In the specialties occurred In the Hrst half hour, aided by purchases of round amounts of the International stocks for London account. Stock values then suf fered mi a continuance of yesterday's heavy liquidation and receded sharply, the specialties losing from 2 to nearly G points. By noon liquidation had prac tically ceased and there were rallies which among tho specialties ranged from o',i to S'4. The standard railways moved far less widely except for Burlington and Delaware and Hudson, which made net gains of P4 and i respectively. Among the specialties the net gains extend to 4',4 In Air Brake, fi'i in Metropolitan, E In Manhattan, 3'.k In Brooklyn Transit nnd an average of 2 points In Federal Steel. Snrr.ir. Kntlnnnl Steel nnd Ten- nesseo Coal and Iron. The market left ott strong nt generally tho best prices. Total sales, 71N.1M shares. Some recessions occurred In the bond market In sympathy with tho early de cline In stocks,, but there was later par tial recoveries. Total sales, $2,523,000. United States "s coupons and the new 4s do., declined In the bid price. By Carrlnston & Cusark. New York, May a. Tim market opened strong and at quite a free advance on covering orders from the late sellers of yesterday afternoon. Steel and Wire and Federal Steel were both strong on rumors that the company was to be ab sorbed by a big steel combination In cluding among others, National Steel. Tin Plato anil Carnegie. After the opening, however, the market met very free liqui dation throughout the whole list nnd at once sold off quite sharply, In somo cases going below the low points of last night. The rumors of possible gold exports nnd tho overbought position of the market, with somo fears as regards the Ford bill, together with the forcing out of lightly margined speculators has caused a de cline with the consequent clearing of tho financial atmosphere. The general situ ation Is a strong one and the stock mar ket has been very heavily purchased by strong Inside interests, and will un doubtedly sell at much higher prices within the month. London for tho first tlmo in tho last three weeks has been a ery large buyer with purchases extend ing pretty much throughout the whole list. Tho crop reports of the day as usual have been ot more or less conflict- lug character with the general consensus of opinion that the damage has been overstated. Burlington declared the usual dividend nt i per cent., which had a favorable effect on tljo Grangers, Tho markot seems to us u great purchase at present prices and while there Is a cer tain lack of public buying, yet tho lnsldo Interests are mi committed to new trade combinations and are so closely Identified with those already launched, that It Is not possible for them to withdraw from teh mark"t at the present time and wo think that the hull moement has In no wise run Its course. Standard issues and the betctr class of industrials are all a purchase for higher figures.
