DIAMOND PICK UPS. if we are to take Hanlon's word for It, Boston's hold on the National .League pennant is doomed. The Richmond papers profess to ho con fident that their club will be the leader from tho stmt In the Atlantic league race. In Freeman, O'Brien and Gettmai, Washington has a fast trio of outfield ers who will bear watching. Philadelphia Press. Arthur Irwin is using Arlle Latham as a son of a Inst chance offering, but thus far Arlle has dono nothing specially prominent. Newark has released Hothfuss and ho Is now 'doing lime" with Toronto. Hi played with the latter team against Pat erson on Monday. Hothfuss Is a Ncwaik boy. A movement Is on foot to utge Nick Young to re-appoint Tim Hurst to the National league stnlf of umpires. Both the Brooklyn nnd Boston managements ileslro his return. The national board of arbllratl m has decided tho case of Pitcher Ames, woo was claimed by Dooley for Montreal and Hasty Wright for P.iterson, by awarding him to the latter club. Billlo Barnio has great hopes of Matt Kllroy as an outllelder for hl Hartford club this year. He does not Intend to use him as a pitcher, but regards his bat ting an element of great utrongth. The Now York players are rather down hearted over the situation, anil say that If Rusle and Seymour hold out the team will not bo heard of In the coming race. Baltimore rooters fully agree with them. Baltimore News. That Jack Cillbert is to slay with Scranton looksi certain. The. manage ment haa not been sure about holding Ollbert, but all trouble seems to be at an end, unless some unforeseen obstaelo presents itself. fillbert Is a fast man, and Is In excellent form. Newark and Paterson do not have as manv homo games on Saturdays as do the other clubs. This is due to tho fact that they aro allotted all the Sunday games, being the only two cities in the circuit In which games on that day ur allowed. Duncan, says the Paterson Call, made a peculiar error a few das ago. A man on third was playing off tin bag when Duncan made a bluff to throw down. He Intended to hold the ball, but It slipped out of his hand and rolled to the playc-s' bench, the runner scoring and the men on llrst nnd second moving up a base. On Billy Sharsls's Allcntown. In our last nights letter we called particular atten tion to this stock predicting a 20 point mlvauco within sixty days, if it goes as it did today tho 20 points will bo realized much sooner than our estimate, Tho steel stocks were Quiet but firm, prices of steel billets have leached tho high est point at Pittsburg, selling at J2ii.r.(i per ton. In thousand ton lots for dollvory in tlireo or four months. This is considered by steel manufacturers ns an lndloatl in that there Is little danger of a backward urn In steel trade Industry. When we consider that steel rails sold for 17 per ton only n little over a jear ago, the immense proilt being realized by the steel trade can be appreciated and the divi dends they will be enabled to pav will surely send the stocks to a verv high fig ure. The Federal Steel company own their own mines, railroads, steamboats, and steel plants, thereby making nil the prom on the finished product, and It therefore can be appreciated that when they say thoy can pay 10 per cent, on their common stock this year thev aro not making any extravagant estimation, lederal Steel stock bought nnd held will make handsome profits.
