The monthly report of the hlfih school N so favorable that we huv much pleasure In noting the following which is an unmistakable proof that the man agement of our schools Is of such a high order of merit that must redound lo the credit of Superintendent Shlel and his able corps of assistants. This Is the percentage of five scholars in the senior class for the past month: Miss Kdnu Morris. .100; Miss Jean Thompson. . 100; Mil's Esther Ryan, n : Miss llessle Gownn. .PD'-fc, and Mls Mary Miller, .om. This Is quite u contrast to what might be said of the night school which Is kept open at a cost of $100 a month to the city. The attendance Is small and the studies are for the most part made up of pranks and malicious mischief and everything but what the school was enacted for. "McfurthyV. Mishaps," which was ihe attraction at Music Hall last night by the Harney Ferguson company, had i! very good audience, and some very good features were highly enjoyed. There was much of the programme that could stand "fixing" without in lurlng the quality of the show. Hut then, we have had a good deal worse. Lorenzo D. Thomas and Miss Mary K. Ilavard wore quietly married last venlng at the home of the bride's par ents on Vine street, and the ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. D. Thomas, father of the groom, in the presence of only the Immediate friends of the young couple. The funeral of the late Mrs. Gil belt S. Jones, whose sad and sudden death occurred on Tuesday, will take place this afternoon from the residence on Welsh Hill, and will be attended by the members of the Knights and Ladles of Honor, which organization pays one thousand dollars upon the death of u members. This afternoon will occur the funeral of the late Mrs. John V. Smiles, whose death occurred on Tuesday last after an ll.ness of two years. The deceased was the oldest daughter of John Hns ton, one of our most highly respected Scottish residents, and her uemlse Is sadly regretted by a large circle of relatives and friends. The April number of the Plttstonlan has Just been Issued and Is neat and clean typographically and tilled with Interesting local matter, besides pro fusely Illustrated. It Is u, credit to C. The Elks held a regular meeting last evening and a social session followed. The two basket ball teams of the Young Men's Christian association will banquet this evening, and we regret nur In ability to be present. James Bell, of Providence, with his guest, Joseph Lobltz, of Galveston, When a builder wants to put up a per manent structure, he looks well to the foundation. He digs deep and lays the (.tones with exactness and precision. He "trues" and "plumbs" and "levels." A defect or weakness in the foundation will altect everything above it. A solid foundation is an absolute necessity for a solid house. In the physical structure the stomaco is tue foundation. Up on it depends the support of every other onran in the body. It is A the weat and disor- rlv. dered stom- r "A.1 causes indi gestion, im pure blood, general de bility, nerv- ousn ess, sleeplessness, and all the woes of dyspep sia. It is the disordered stomach tbat makes thin, impoverished blood, where microbes of consumption flourish and mul tiply. It is the weak and disordered stom ach which brings about conditions that cause a hacking cough, sore throat, bron chitis, weak and bleeding lungs. To make the foundation of your physical structure solid; so that the rest of the or gans may successfully resist the attHcks of disease, nothing equals Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. This medicine is a tonic, an appetizer, a blood purifier, a nerve builder, a flesh maker, a foe to weak ness and a blessing to worn-out and run down humanity. It is a non-alcoholic specific for every disease that comes in ad vance of consumption. It is a distinct remedy and stands alone. Nothing is like it, and there is no substitute for it. It has a record of thirty years of cures. Mrs. I.ula Htdgrcoke, 0f Dozier. Collings worth Co., Texas, writes: "I was troubled for seven or eight years with indigestion aud liver complaint, anil received more benefit from the u of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery nnd 'Pleasant Pellets' than any medicine I have ever tried." Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets are for constipation, biliousness. and torpid liver. These troubles nicy cure permanently wiinoui causing distress. The Arm hold John l'hillp Sousa has on the opera-loving public was demon strated by the manner In which "The Erlde-Elect" was received at the Ly ceum last night. There was a largo audience and It was as enthusiastic us It wus large. The scene of the opera Is the Island of Capri and the stage settings are unique and striking. The music has the true Sousa dash throughout and was written for the great army of thenter-goers, not for the few with an educated muslral palate. There is a lot of genuine humor in the opera and the full ef fect of It wns brought out by the com pany that produced It last night. Albert Hart, who made his debut as a star by succeeding Do Wolf Hopper in "Wang," was at the head of the comedy end of the opera and succeed ed In being funny without being offen sive. Hilda Clark and Christie Muc Donald made distinctive hits In Ivio of the leading female rolls. The per formance of the entire company wos highly satisfactory Making a, Big Hit. The company headed by Little Trene Myers Is making a big hit at the Acad emy of Music. This afternoon It v. Ill present "American Born" and tonight "Kidnapped." Minstrels Friday Night. ".Minstrels, minstrels, none so happy as we'" So will slug the merry Home Minstrels at the Lyceum theater Fri day night and the audience will be as happy as thp boys on the stage as be tween the sweet music, the pretty dance and the merrv wit of the pro gramme one enii not help being pleas ed as the verdict Is bound to be "the performance Is the beat of the kind ever seen In this city." Everything will go with a snap. There will be no waits or badly told Jokes, ns Is often seen in amateur en tertainments, but a freshness about everything that will surprls? you. No expense has been spared, and every one who attends will not only be aiding a most deserving charity but will get good worth for their money. "Ideals" Next Week. To the theater-going public will bo presented next week one of the best repertoire companies, viz: John A. Hummelein's big attraction. "Tho Ideals," headed by two young favorites, Miss Beatrice Kaile and Mr. Chester De Vondo, and Including Howson's Twentieth Century band nnd orches tra, said to be the finest musical organ ization with any traveling company. The engagement will open on Monday night with an elaborate production of Edwin Arden's celebrated play. "Eagle's Nest," presented with all tha necessary scenery and effects. Dally matinees will be given as usual. Novelty at the Gniety Next Week. The star act of next week's show at the Gaiety will be that of Adgle, n. Spanish dancing girl, who does a turn In a den of lions. Dancing girls are numerous on the variety stage, but dancing girls who possess unusual power over vicious wild animals are a. novelty Indeed. Adgle possesses this power to a great degree and she Is using It to good advantage to '.nrself and Manager Van Osten of the Gaiety, who does not hesitate to pay high sal aries for novelties, so Scranton gets her for a week as an extra attraction to the burlesque company which comes In and the Gaiety theater goers are the gainers. Adgle Is armed with a small whip only while In the cage with the lions, which are three In number, one male und two female, Victoria and Trilby are the names of tho females. The former Is quite ugly, but fears her trainer. The male. Prince by name, is good natured and lazy, but he does a number of clever tricks in answer to his mistress" commands nnd caresses from the small whip. This net Is s' jmrnte and apart from the New Monti Carlo Girls lJurlesquerH which will appear at the Gaiety. Man ager Van Oaten himself assumes the engagement of Mile. Adgle und her retinue of trainers nnd assistants. Tril lions will be brought Into the Gaiety theater Monday morning on the Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western rail road, over which they come in a special car from New York city. The slock market was very irregular today, violent fluc tuations being lrcquent. Sharp lecesslons appeared early. Tho market rallied with a burst of strength In the railways In the hope of a favorablo crop report. A sen sational rise cccurrid In call money, as high us 18 per cent, being exacted for loans on Industrial collateral and later 15 per cent, was renched even on railways. Extensive liquidation followed the ap peiirnnro of tho hghest money rate so far this season. Thcro were many breaks of from 2 to I points from tho highest quo tations of tho day but Btcrlis recovered on covering und 0 per cent, money at tho close, leaving the list slightly above yes terday's llgures, with tho tono steady; Manhattan receded ever 2 points and Third Avcnuu 5. llrooklyn Transit nnd American Steel and Wire were lifted over 2 points each. A rise of 314 points In Mex ican Central on enormous dealings was snld to relate to a plan to re-dlstrlbute the capital but nothing definite came for ward. .Much of the buying of this stock wns said to come from Boston. Mexican National had a sympathetic rise of over a point. The talk of favorable business prospects of Wabash lifted tho preferred stoek n substantial fraction on large ileal ngs. Total sales were 875,421 shares. Con siderable activity and strength was dis played In somo sections of the bond mar ket but tho general tone was uncertain. Totnl sales. 790.oeo. United States new 4s declined U in the bid price. By Carrlngton & Cusr.ck. New York, Apill 5. The nnuket. con trary to expectations nfter an opening sllgtly below closing prices rallied nnd showed considerable strength during tho morning hours. Manhattan and Brook lyn Itnpltl Transit were both weak in tho opening dealings, but both recovered to about eloslng prices of last night or imove. ine teatures or tno Healings up to noon wero the advances In tho special, ties, including Hubber common, Mexican Central, Leather preferred and Continen tal Tobacco. Around 1 o'clock heavy covering movement was engineered against the shorts In tho Grangers which Jumped from 1 to 3 per cent. Buying way mostly confined to traders who had sold In the early part of the day on Bock Isl and's poor showing for March. New York Central nnd Union P.ielllo were both well bought by Insldo Interests nnd advanced fractionally. The genernl market showed the effects of the heavy realizing and while strong was very erratic In Its move ments. It looks to us ns If for the pres ent wo should havo turns both up and down. Money still continues somewhat elose nnd the discrimination by the banks against Industrial collateral has effected tho speculation in the shares. Tho Fed eral Steel Issues were inclined to be soft, while American Steel nnd Wire nfter a weak opening turned strong nnd ad vanced 3 per cent. Tin Plate Is holding Its recent rise aud unless bad news de velops is liable to sell much higher. Met ropolitan had a sharp decline In the early dealings but recovered most of the loss. Conservative houses in the street all ad vising against heavy committments on long side nt moment advising purchases only on soft spots. The market has been very heavily overbought and It Id possi ble any severe decline will bring out weak stocks. The market towards close sold off rapidly on liquidation by early buyers and renewed selling by traders who were all working for lower price:. Wo think ourselves the maiket u sale on sharp rallies nnd a purchase when par ticularly weak. The close was Irregular and weak, in some cases nearly at lowest prices of the day.
