Wall Street Review. New York, March 16. The sensational rise In sugar today was largely respon sible for the elimination of much of the short Interest In the rest of the list, material gains appearing, notably among the specialties while the rail ways at tha high points averaged l'.i cents up, but there were no recessions from the best and the market closed under pressure. It was n wild day on the exchange, sugar figuring from over a U cent of a million shares with the aggregate trade reaching nearly a mil lion shnree. The market was moving cautiously upward when sugar burst Into prominence and touched 170, a rise to 297t points over last night, 11 points above the September boom prices of '07. The stock closed at 1'9'i. The fluctuations were erratic, nn Instance In point belnj the drop of 10 points on two transactions from the high pilnt. A trader sold 300 of the 800 shares trad ed at 170 and within a moment covered at 1G0, the only Intermediate transac tion being 100 Fhares at 1C0. Thus the broker realizsd $3,000 on his short sale. There was various rumors connected with the movement In sugar, among them the repot t that the trade war had been settled, that an agreement had been reached with 'the Olocose Refining company and the Doscher and Arbuckle Interests. People in the trade gener ally discredited the rumors, profetslng ignorance of any deal upon which they would be likely po3ted were It In exist ence. Local Interests ldentlllcd with th concerns mentioned likewise dis credited the reports. In some quar ters the movement was attributed to a corner In the stock and a punish ment of the shorts, while on the other hand a house which was .active in the dealings claimed to be In Ignorance of the reason for tha advance, but thought It of too great magnitude to have been merely a manouevre ngnlnst the shorts. Tobacco after yielding 74 points made an extreme rise of 10 to 21C, in sym pathy with the movement In sugar. Glucose also rose !) points to 75, coinci dent with the movement In sugar. New York Air Drake touched 200, a rise of It points; Metropolitan Jumped BU to 2"Si. Third avenue rose to to 210: Manhattan 8 to 112 vi; Brooklyn Transit to 21 to 102: Consolidated Gas C'i to 221, and Hurllngton 4 to 117's. The other grancors sympathised in a les ser degree In the advance. Stiffen ing of the money rate dampened the ar dor of the speculators and caused the recession in the later trading, although at the close money on the call was 3V?a4. Total sales were 1H7.800 shares. The bond market shared to some ex tent In the upward movement, but there wore some weak spots which gave the general trading nn li regular aspect. Total sales $3,225,000. United States 3's improved V,. while the new I's registered re-acted '4 and do. coupon U in the bid price. Hy J. It. U Carrlngton &. Co. New York, March If!. Tlio market after a fairly strong opening hung In the air for the first two hours of business. About 12 o'clock Sugar began an advance which carried prices of the stock 30 points above, opening and started a covering through out the tntlre list which curried prices up from large fractions to very largo units in the advance. Such a market as today's hits not been seen In the street in vears. The cornering of shorts through out the whole list dlselobes the fjtt that stocks In the majority of cases arc so closely held that the floating supply was comparatively limited and that with any case at all la money, It Is a very simple opi ralien to advance almost anything without reaatd to prices ur position In the market. The day's fluctuations are bound to hnvn 11 bad effect temporarily at least. Where speculation runs so wildly rampant us It has today, the conservative trader Is almost sure to withdraw from active speculation and wc do not advise any heavy dealings until the market has settled down to a more normal rendition. The whole list Is exceptionally strong and possibly may be carried Higher on tho sentimental movement, but It Is no pur chase now. however, and wc strongly tul vlso our friends from buying until thero has been some slight set-back at least. The removing or a short Interest Is al ways a weak element In a market and withdraws Just so much sustaining power. For that reason we are inclined to think that nt the moment tho market Is not one which should bo traded In heavilv. At tho same time it is quite evident that no great decline need he feared nnd that the money to bo made Is on buvlng tho specialties on all weak spots. The tn mendous fluctuations have brought no financial troubles to any of the well known houses which speaks volumes for the flmtnclul position of the street at large. Market closed somewhat Irregular but very strong. Quotations furnished by LABAF. ,t Fl'LLEH, stock, grain and cotton brok ets. rcms 2u9 and 210, Hoard of Trndu building. Scranton. Fa.
