The Olbneys opened a weeks' engage ment at the Academy ot Music last night with a very satisfactory produc tion of "Anglo, the Country Olrl," a modern version of "Onlv a Farmer's Daughter." In which Minnie Madern Flske first came prominently Into pub lic notice. Miss Nellie dibney In tho title role nnd Morgan Glbney In the eccentric character of I'hlneas Putnam, tho farmer, proved themselves excep tionally clever artists. The Hoelller stock company, which forms the support, Is epulte capable". Specialties of a high grade are Intro duced between the acts. This afternoon "Her Husband's Sin" will be produced nnd this evening the hill will be the "Black Flag." Moulin Rouge Burlesquers. There Is no question that Fred Hld er's Moulin Rouge Extravaganza com pany now at the Gaiety theater is one of the best burlesque organizations on the road. Tho features of the perform ances given yesterday were up tei date from beginning to end and there was scarcely a dull number on the pro gram. The opening sketch, entitled "A Fountain of Pleasure," sparkled with wit, funny situations and bright music. Hut the specialty turns probably brought out the originality of the ar tists to best advantage. Wills and Collins, in their operatic burlesque; the two Fantas, acrobats and boxers, and their educated pig, and Harris and Walters, sketch artists, created nn un usual amount of Interest. Th prem Icrs of terpslchore-, the Macau' ulsters, gave an artistic exhibtion of thu gen uine article In old time ballet dancing, which Is seldom seen In thl.j ng? of high kicking, and the other da'P't" ar ranged by Mile. Ceurbo were very pleasing. The entertainment Increased in Interest nnd merit from the opening until the ribbons of the Moulin Rouge dancers were thrown out at the audi ence Just before the fall of the curtain. The Moulin Houge company will be at the Gaiety today and tomorrow after noon and evening. "A Stranger In New York." To "A Stranser in Now York" be longs the distinction of playing to larger and more enthusiastic audiences last season than any of the other Hoyt comedies. Its presentation everywhere has been greeted with enthusiasm, and the "standing room only" sign has been used at nearly every performance. The cast this sieason includes John D. Gilbert, Tom Martin, Sam Marlon, John Mitchell, Edmund Elton, H. J. West, Charles Church, and among the pretty women are Alice Holbrook, Charlotte Stolle, the McCoy Sisters (the wonder ful dancers), llertha Hoardman, Amy Muller and several others. "A Stranger In New York" will return to the Ly ceum this evening, and Mr. Hoyt prom ises that the piece will come to us this time even better and brighter than ever. "Sunshine of Paradise Alley." The return visit of Denmnn Thomp son's "The Sunshine of Paradise Alley" takes place at the Lyceum next Fri day evening, March 10. The success of "The Sunshine of Paradise Alley" Is duo wholly to Its naturalness and sim plicity. They enthrall one. It Is not a story of slum life, but a story of the poor, und It is ns clean as a whistle. Mr. Thompson has done for bumble life In New York what he was the first to do for rural life, and he has Imbued his latest stage pictures with tho same Port of charm which has made his "Old Homestead" a classic of the American theatre. 1'IUCEBUItO. Press, New York, March 7,-Prlccs dropped steadily today on somewhat restricted dealings, each rnlly affording the beara another level from which to attack prices. With some exceptions leading shares opened below Saturday's close. Speculation was purely professional and much was made of the llrmnoss of money which at one time touched ."Hie. for call loans, at which prlco it closed. "The best authorities" were tiuoted as terming the money Hurry as only a "Hash In the pan." Tho Improvement In demnnd fer money In tho dry goods and other lines of trade together with Ihe preparations to finnnce the Central Pacific settlement with the government, tho Chicago nnd Alton deal and somo Industrial combinations were responsi ble for tho Improved tone. The nn thraclte coal shares which were strong in tho early dealings eased off sympa thetically with the general market ex cept for Delaware, Lackawanna and Western which In the final dealings ran up over eight points to 162V4. Sugar was rather steady most of the day on tho advance In refined article, but fell oft In tho late dealings. Some realiz ing appeared In American Tobacco which broke some G points after an Ini tio! rlso. The Grangers were inclined to heaviness, with Hurllngton, maklns a net loss or ::. .Most siut """" considerable losses and the closing was weak. Total sales were 503,400 shares. Today's bond trading was at the ex pense of vnlucs, many of the netive Is sues giving way smartly. Total rales were $3,I"0,000 United States old 4s registered de clined U In the bid price. ISy J. It. L. Carrlngton & Co. New York, March O.-The market opened active and Irregular with con stocks the leading feature, ltdg. com. and tlrst and second preferred advanced H to l per Cent with largo transactions On i arlo id Western nnd Jersey Central sympathiz ing with tho movement. The buying was attributed to Morgan Interests. Steel ana wire, both common and preferred, cry Ktrong on the opening dealings udvuiir ing sharply about 1 per cent., which was subsequently lost on execution ot prollt taking orders. After opening London and Commission Houses were freo sellers , .inu the whole list reacted, 11. Q. and Atch. being chief sufferers. London sold about 10.000 shares, chiefly Atchison, C. As O. and O. & W. On tho decline some sup port was given nt tlrst but seemed to be withdrawn nnd commission houses seemeU to lie fairly latgo sellers. There was some evidence or buying ana iubbuwik to think that Standard Oil and Houi Ilrokcrs took their specialties on tho weakness of tho market. Tho bank state ment on Saturday has been followed by the general belief that money Is inclined to work closer nnd that this view Is borne out to u certain extent by the action of the bank and trust companies in New York, tho largest of which today ad vanced rates over 1 pe r cent, on stand ing loans. Thero Is enough uneasiness caused by tho situation to make us be llevo nnv decided upward movement Is unlikely at tho present time. The public at laigo are quite as well educated as the average professional on the last at tempt to get them In to the market was somewhat of u failure. Tho pools and Interests which have been working for iiii.imi- tirlfi.s nro luL'liinlnc- to ilnel this out, and whilr at tho present time the market Is likely to be supported ngalust anv heavy selling pressiue, yet It Is not probable a sustained advance throughout the whole list will be undertaken In the face of evident disposition of speculators to tnkei protlts on all bulges. During the early afternoon the market was very dull with apparently no attempt by leaders to advance prices or control the market In any way. Specialties and some of the Inactive stocks displayed some weakness. After 2 o'clock the list rallied fraction ally on operations of tho Traders, who were inclined to buy for a short turn. The market today has been the dullest we have had In some time and shows less Inclination on part of outsiders to tako hold. Wo are Inclined to think there may bo somo rally from present prices, but would advise sales on any pronounced bulge. Tho market could safely bought, however, on wenk spots. Close was dull but steady. Very respcctifully. J. II. L. Carrlngton & Co.
