THE SCRANTON TRIBUNE-SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1899. a 3 THE GREATEST MONTH FOR TRADE TUBRUAK.Y HAS TASSED ALL RECORDS IN BUSINESS LINE. In All the Years of Weekly Com mercial Reporting There Has Been No Other Week Showing Returns Equalling the Inst Six Days. Rnpld Advance In Trices Pro gress In Industries. Now York, Match 3. 11. O. Dun & Cn.'s weekly review of traUo will say tomorrow: The business for the past month was far the greatest rver known In Febru ary. Clearing house exchanges were about $7,0011.000,000 against $P,5J7.CS3.84t last year uitl CI.2 larger than In 1532. In all the years of weekly commercial reporting there has been no other wool: In which tho leports from all parts of the country have been on tho whole so good as1 they are Oils week. More over, during the past week thore has been a general advance In wages, Im mediate or prospective. At most points I he advance of 10 per cent, or more wih entirely voluntary. It has aver aged i" to 10 per cent. In tin plate works anil about 10 per cent. In other cases, mid as It affects much over 100,000 hands it will add greatly to tho pur chasing power of the wage earners. Tho returns of failures In February, while showing larger liabilities than In January, are highly encouraging. A rather unusual number of large fail ure in scattered branches of manufac ture has swelled tho aggtegate. Includ ing one concetti for $1,000,000 In elec trical apparatus, but in nearly all branches the statement indicates a rc marknblv healthy condition in splto of these failures, white In trading tho de faulted liabilities are smaller than in January or any previous winter months for six years. In prices the rtrlklng feature has been tho rapid advance In Iron and steel products, resulting from n demand greater than the works In the country can supply. All works of Importance have been crowding with orders run ning to July 1 or later. I5ut belated buyers have given life to concerns long inactive and ns these can add hut little to the output tho markets have been entirely controlled by the buying demand. IN THE PLAY HOUSES. "A Fool's Revenge." Creston Clarke and an excellent com pany opened their engagement at the Lyceum last night In the powerful drama, "A Pool's Itevengo." Tills company possesses exceptional Interest to Seranton people, as Harry W. Storm ' is Its manager, while a talented mem ber, who was also with Mr. Clarke Inst season, Is I'. S. Barrett, of this i lty. The role assumed by Mr. Clarke last evening Is most ungracious and repellant in character, but affords fine scope for his abilities as a tragedian. Mr. Clarke should really be In the leglt liimatu ,lrama and It Shakespearean roles did not pale In these days of vaudeville and often coarse farce com edy, he would reach his true place in that higher realm, .where he would have a brilliant, sympathetic second in the genius of his wife, Adelaide Prince. Mr. Clarke's Interpretation of the "Fool" was powerful to a degree that wrought his audience to the highest pitch. The malevolence of a medieval nature in which hatred has long been cherished was brought out with all tho Intensity of which the well known actor Is capable. Miss 'Prince was n fair Marguerite-like Flordellsa, whoso grace and sweetness aro especially suited to the girlish part. Mr, George Parker's "poet" was exceedingly well portrayed and Mr. Walter Perclval has certainly found his vocation in the role of tho villain, whoso villainy Is so deep as to make one shudder. Miss Alice Yale gave an effective Impersonation of the wronged duchess. Mr. Forrester did his bit of comedy work with Mrs. Carter's "Urlgltta" with real artistic effect. P. S. Bar rett's role In this play Is rather less Important than those to be produced this afternoon and evening, but it was cleverly taken, Tho others who were uniformly good were Messrs. John Car ter, J. J. Sambrook, Gustavo Chutts and Miss Ina Crooks. This afternoon the strong Russian play, "The Last of Ills Race," will be presented. Tho bill for this evening Is "David Gar rlck." "Bonnie Scotland" at Academy. "Bonnlo Scotland," an Intensely In teresting drama was presented nt the Academy of Music last night by the Itennett-Moulton company. It was re ceived with great heartiness by the largo audience. This afternoon "For Cuba's Cause" will be presented and tonight "McKenna's Flirtation." FINANCIAL. iMSAVt' LaBAR & FULLER BROKERS. Tho aibney-lloefller company, which will open a week's engagement at tho Academy next Monday, comes from a successful engagement at Klmlra, where It has been doing a "standing room only" business at every perform ance. Tho performances as presented by this company are on the continuous order, specialties being Introduced be tween each act. Among the vaudeville people who will be seen with this com pany are DeHollls and Valorl, comedy jugglers, from Koster and Dial's New York: the Hnrlows. late of McSorly's Twins company; Mack and Fenton, Hilly Stanford, Gorman comedian and wooden shoo dancer: Lnfe McKeo, In Illustrated songs; O. Dally dlmo matinees will becln on Tuesday. Rider's Burlesquers. Fred Rider's Moulin Rouge show Is not composed, like too many burlesque entertainments of the present day, of n slow tiresome farce and a few cheap specialties. Kvery line In tho burlesque Is amusing, every specialty Is high class and expensive and every pcr foimcr, whether burlesque or specialty, Is nn artiste of recognized worth and merit. Much of tho enjoyment of tho comedy Is duo to tho efforts of tho comedians, Charles Harris, Cooper and Stewart and Monte Collins. The Moulin Houge comes to the Gnlety for three days, commencing Monday matinee. "A Stranger in Now York." Next Tuesday evening at tho Lyceum theatre Hovt's "A Stranger In New York" which created such n favorable Impression when last presented here, will return fresh from Its triumphant visit to London, England, where It was presented at the Duke of York's Thea ter. Since tho "Stranger" was last pre sented here Mr. Hoyt has added a lot of new scenes, much catchy music, novel and sensational vaudeville fea tures, stunning costumes nnd elaborate stage accessories that are spoken of as being tho most extravagant ho has ever bestowed upon any of his productions. No better selection could have been made for the title role than John D. Gilbert, a comedian who Is foremost, and can be truthfully said to be the pinnacle of all fun makers. Others In the cast are Tom Martin. Sam Martin, John Mitchell, Edmond Elton, the Mc Coy sisters, Charlotte Stolle, Alice Hol brook, Amy Muller and several others. m - Tho Grip Cure That Does Cure.
