AS Tho Incronsetl Demand for Raw Silk' India Rubber, Fibers and Hidoa, as Shown in tho Custom Rocoipts, Moans That Our Workshops Have Been Unusually Busy. Special to The Scranton Tribune AVnshlnRton, Jun. 1. That the manu facturers of tho United States and those depending upon them have been exceptionally busy in the year Just ended Is shown by some Hsures re latlnB to the Imports of manufacturers mateilalH and manufactured goods compiled by tho trensury bureau of statistics. With larKO Imputations of manufacturers' nuitetlals and small Im portatlons of manufactured Roods, and accompanying this an abnormally laffce demand nt bomu for manufactures, It Is appaicut that thosu engaged In their production must have found constant occupation. Four grout classes of raw materials I are habitually and necessarily brought into the country tor manufacturers' use raw silk, India rubber, libers and hides. If the Importations of these show a marked Increase, it may be ac cepted as evidence ot Inct eased ac tivity on the part of manufacturers. It Is Intel estlng, therefore, to com pare the flguioH of the eleven months' Importations In these great classes lth thof-e of earlier years. The 11k- ures covering the eleven months show J that In hides tho Importations have ' been largely In excess of any earlier year, tho total value of hides Imported In tho eleven months of 1W being $?.C, 03.100 against $J0,015,3G7 in tho corres ponding months of last year, and J17. 'J15.o2S In the coriesponcllng months of 1890. The number of pounds Imported in 1S0S were, in round numbers, 20.000. 000 in excess of tho corresponding months of 1SDT liunnrcu. Indian rubber, of which large quan tities are used by oui manufacturers show In eleven months of tho present year a value of $21',83I,ST8 against $10, 2T0.C33 In eleven months of 1M)7, $12. OGWS In 1S9G against $17,413,848 In 1S93. Itnw silk for the ten months ending with October amounts to $21,40,223 In alue against S20.S29.99C In the corres ponding months of 1S97. and $10,B29,!37 In tho corresponding months of 1S9G, being thus in ten months of 1S9S moie than double that of tho corresponding period of 1S90. Of fibers the Importa tions In the eleven months ended with November amounted to $15,542,211 against. $12,303,0.'3 in the corresponding months of the preceding year, and $11, o2G,500 In the eleven months of 189G. In all of these four great article? Im ported for the use of manufacturers It ' will-be seen that the importations of j the year for the period covered by the above figures have been in excess of j the pi cording eors; rubbei being 50 ' per cent, laiger than in 1894. silk 50 per cent. In excess of 1893; hides more j than double that of 1896 or 1S94, and i libers 5n per cent, in excess of 1S9 1. , When this increase in materials 1m potted for the use of manufacturers is consldeied In connection with the fact that the importations of manufactures have fallen In the year jii"t ended from $JS1.000.OO0 In 1897 to $230,000,000 in the piesent year, it will be seen that there Is good reason to believe that the manufaetiners have been exceptionally busy In addition to thin, tho figures of the tieasury bureau of Htatlstlcs show that the expoits of manufactures In the year just ended will bo mote than $20,000,000 In excess of those of any ptccedlng year, and will reach In round terms an average of $1,000,000 a day for eveiy business day of the year. WOOI.,. In only a single aiticle among the im portations for manufacturers' use has the year 1S9S failed to phow an In creased demand. This single article is wool. The imports of wool In 1897 were abnormally great by reason of tho Im porters bilnglng In all the foreign wool available prior to the enactment of the tariff law of 1S97 which transferred wool from the free to the dutiable list. The wool Importations of eleven months of 1S97 amounted to 337,892,264 pounds against 133,333.263 In the corresponding months of the preceding year, and against an average In the correspond ing months of earlier yeais of less than halt that quantity. In other words, a full two years' supply of foreign wool was brought Into the country In the calendar year 1S97, and it Is not sur prising, therefore, that the eleven mnntbs of 1S9S show imports of only 95,114,620 pounds. It Is thus apparent th it the small impoitatlons of wool In 1F9S did not indicate a lack of activity on the part of woolen manufacturers, since they evidently had In bnnd when the year began a full ordinary year's supply, and the fact that 93,000,000 pounds have been Imported in eleven momns ot imi in aiiauion to the large stock on hand at the end of 1S97, indl- entes an unusual activity on their part, as well as on the part of all other manufaetiners. IN THE PLAY HOUSES. Now Romantic Play. For poetic cluuin and purity of pur- pose, "Vngabondla." the new romantic piny which Mi. and Mrs. Huss Whytal will piesent at the Lyceum theatre ns the special New Year's ofteilns this afternoon and night, Is said to be un- surpassed. "Vngabondla" at the same time Is also commented upon for its wealth of dramatic foice and whole some comedy. Wuite'a Company This Weok. Tho populailty or Waite's icpertolro organization Is shown conclusively nt different cities visited this season. Largo advance sales and big enthusi astlo audiences have ruled the per foimnnces given, nnd tho attractive leading lady, Annie Loulna Ames, has regained the favor won by bet In the old Atkinson & Cook company duvs. when her visits wero frequent, and over welcome. It is genoialb known that Aniile Louise Ames Is stue of remem brance outside the theatrical world, yot her form and features adorn u Pat Is salon, perpetuated in Joso'h famous painting, "L'Oieau.x." for which she pofvd when In Pails.
