Compiling of the Returns Was Watched with Much Interest. Tho result of Tuesday's election was the one absorbing topic discussed about town yesterday. Wherever men con gregated they commented on the small vote cast and the lnrge amount of cutting that was done. At the court house where unofllclal computations of the open returns were being made by the candidates and newspaper men there were many anx ious Inquiries from hundreds of call era for exact Information about the exact status of the vote for the var ious candidates. Judge WUlard, chairman of the Re publican county committee, was one of those who paid a visit to the prothon otary's olllce, where the returns were being compiled. He was In a very happy mood and If he felt any regret over the fuct that the county had giv en a plurality to Dr. Swallow he did not give any expression to his disap pointment. The result In the state was probably a sufficient balm for any Irri tation he might have felt over Lack awanna's attitude toward Dr. Swal low. He had tho satisfaction of knowing that tho largo voto Dr. Swallow re ceived did no particular harm and that with the exception of Hon. John F. Reynolds, In the Fourth legislative dis trict, every local candidate that the chairman and his committee waged such an energetic battle for was elect ed by a safe plurality. Mr. Wlllard's management of the campaign was of the kind that It In good to contemplate In theso days of John Wanamakcr politics. It was ag gressive and buslness-llk? from begin ning to end, but entirely devoid of any thing npproachlng mud-throwing or vindication. Even when Republican candidates wero attacked In a disrep utable manner and by disreputable means he refused to be swerved from the honorable, manly courso ho had mapped out for tho campaign. He lind faith in the sense nt fair play and decency of the people as a whole and tho results give ample demonstration that he was right. Colonel F. J. Fltzslmmons, the Dem ocratic county chairman, was not at his office yesterday. The hard work of the campaign told heavily upon him and he remained In his room for tho greater part of the day to recuperate. He made a gallant fight for tho men on his ticket and the vote they received Is a testimonial of the earnest, system atic work done for them. A. O, Thoninson, chairman of the Prohibition county committee, was hard at work In his office In tho Trad ers' bank building yesterday afternoon and did not look at all us If ho had Just emerged from the most sensational and successful campaign In the history of his party In Lackawanna county. "I am proud of the Intelligence dN played by the voters of Lackawanna county," he said. "They gave Dr. Swallow a very handsome vote: one that Is entirely satisfactory. I nm keenly disappointed, however, In the result In other parts of tho state. If the people had voted as they talked Dr. Swallow would certainly have been chosen governor. There was a great deal or talk Indulged In by the voters of the state that did not crvstallze Into anything stronger than talk. LATIIUOPE'S VOTE. "There Is abundant evidence of a good deul of that kind of talk In this county In the comparative small voto received by W. W, Lathrope. We had a capable candidate of unquestioned worth nnd ability, yet hundreds who said they would vote for him evidently did not. I anticipated that ho would receive a much larger vote than he did. "Altogether we feel much encouraged by this light. Wp have tuught a large body of voters to bo more Independent In casting their ballots and the victors of yesterday's battle will be better, because of the ordeal they went through." The llrst thing Attorney Fred W.' Fleltz did when he reached his ofllce yesterday was to send tho following telegram to Hon. John Wnnnmaker at Philadelphia: The people of I.nckawanna county have answered your impertinent question, "Who Is William Connell?' F. W, Fleltz. Vp to midnight a reply had not been received from Air. V.'anamaker. Hon. AI. F. Sando was at the prothonotary's office a good part of the day, llgurlng on the returns. He took his defeat for congress In a philosophical manner. To a Tribune reporter he said that tak ing Into consideration tho fact that his opponent was Scranton's most prominent citizen, the showing he made Indicated to him that he has many loyal friends throughout the county to whom he Is profoundly grateful for the Interest they took In his candidacy, FIGURING A PLURALITY. Hon. John F. Reynolds and his Dem ocratic opronent, I'. K. Timlin, wero also hard at work on the returns until all the votes cast lu the Fourth legis lative district had been footed up and 11 was found that Air. Timlin had been dented by a small plurality. He feared that the vote cast by tho soldiers at Camp Aleade might wipe out his plurality and late In the afternoon telegraphed to a friend In the regiment to send the vote for Reynolds and Timlin. John J. Schouer, Jr., the next rep resentative from the Second district, was about tho court houb" and wi.s warmly congratulated by his friends. Congratulations were also showered 011 Hon. John It. Farr, Dr. J. J. Roberts, the next coroner, and George Steven son, the noxt county surveyor, all of whom won substantial victories over their Democratic opponents. To Senator J. C", Vaughan came many messages of congratulation over the splendid victory he won In the senatorial district. His big victory Is one of the features of the election. Hon. William Conner's ofllce In the Htately Connell building on Washing ton avenue was thronged with friends yesterday, who called to tender their congratulations upon his re-election to congress.
