Early yesterday inoinlnp the resi dence ot Lyman Illicit, on Itock street, warf burned to tho Ground. Tho fam ily had been away und In tho evening Mr. Illicit cumc home, lighted a. lump nnd called on a neighbor. During his absence tho house was Ignited nnd shortly aftur midnight It had been completely reduced to embers. Owing to the lack of tin electric firo alarm system the blaze gained great headway beforo tho hose companies reached tho scene and It was with great difficulty that much valuable property surrounding the Illicit homo was saved. The fires of tho past fortnight liavo done more to emphasize the need of a fire alarm system than tho occurrences of a year previous, still not a word has been said by councils about pro viding one. Ordinary flic alarm agi tation has lost Its potency and some heroic method must be adopted to win us the safeguard. How would It work for tho constituents of each council man to petition him and hold him per sonally responsible, accepting no ex cuse and brooking no delay In tho ex ercise of his best endeavors for a llro alarm? SAYS HE WAS DRUQQED. But Tom's Allocations Do Not Agrco Willi Those of Christmas. Tom Jtonk, formerly ot this city, re cently of Justus, came to Carbondalo to spend the Fourth with old friends. He called at Christmas Davis' cele brated Belmont house for refresh ment. As to what happened there, there Is a wide divergence of opinion. Tom and Christmas do not agree. Tom made his statement to Alderman At kinson and swore to It. Ho alleges that while partaking of cheering bev erages he was overcome by a sensa tion that -was never before known to come out of a schooner with him at the open end. 'When ho recovered, his watch was gone. Tom believes ho was drugged for the purpose of robbery. The alderman's writ In the hands of Constable Gllby says so. Christmas says It is all a blackmailing scheme. LOCAL AND PERGONAL. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Fear and fam ily, of Broad street, Plttston, are visit ing at tho home of Mr. and Mrs. Itees A.
