GOSSIP OF THE CAMP.
From a Staff Correspondent.
Camp Daniel II. Hastings, Mt. Gretna,

American war claims for thu considera
tion of Pennsylvania's next legislature.
Turkey nnd chicken was unite plentiful
at last Sunday's dinner throughout the
wholo devislon, nnd no 0110 reports hav
ing seen a market tag 011 any of tho
fowl that was brought Into camp. A
saw mill that was rasli enough to stand
around unguarded before the quarter
master Issued lumber for Mooring is an
other thing tho statu will bu called up to
settle for.
Alany cottage owners, loo, will doubt
lessly have bills to present for front
porches, plank sidewalks, interior parti
tions, outhouses and the like. It is right,
too, that the stato should pay these bills,
everybody agrees, not only lu Justice to
tho owners of tho property, but as a
penalty for the way It treated its sol
diers while It had them In charge.
Battery A. of Philadelphia, had tar
get practice yesterday morning, filing
solid shot and four-inch shells at a mark
on tho mountain a mile uwav. As the
shrieking missiles Hew across the parade
ground it reminded one of being oil Alain
street In Hawley when somebody shout
ed "low bridge." Kvcn such a vet
eran as Governor Hastings instinctively
"ducked" every time a shot was fired.
Tho soldiers don't know Just whom
they are working for at present, but It
Is thought that the regular army wages
went Into effect today. Last evening the
company clerks, by orders from division
h ndqiiarters turned In the company pay
rolls for six days, The presumable cut
from Sl.no a day to 15 cents per diem has
not caused tho least bit of comment. It
was to come and a day or a week does
not mako much difference.

them. They can't be mustered In until
tho recruiting begins, and dare not go
homo with tho echoes of their farewell
oration still reverberating through the
Lehigh valley. They are scattered about
the division ekeing out a rigorous exist
ence on what their scantily provided per
gonal friends can spare.
Chief Robllng was standing In along
the division street yesterday when Gov
ernor Hastings and Colonel Atorrell
passed by on their way to the Second
brigade Inspection. The chief started out
In the same direction saying Jocosely to
a group he was leaving: "Kxense me, I
must escort tho governor over lo the In
spection." Tho governor likes his llttje Joke. He
overheard the remark, and turning about
with a broad smllo on his face, saluted
and said: "Captain, allow me to escort
you to the Inspection." The chief was
so embarrassed he forgot to salute. The
governor waited for him and thero was
nothing leit to do but necept the Invita
tion. y walked aoros the parade
ground with His Ktcidlency and was
g'ad when he was out of reach of tlw
Uttering of the group that witnessed the
Incident. Ho was more glad when an op
portunity came for accidentally getting
lost In the throng that surrounded the
inspecting party.
Senator 13. B. Hardenberg, of Hones

son, Corporal Raymond Hardenberg. of

Someone has said, "Style is the
dress of thought." Do you realize
when one visits your home how
the furnishings tell the character of
the occupant? In one home you
will find ordinary inoffensive styles,
that's the "thoughless" buyer. In
another hideous colors and won
derful designs. That's the "care
less" buyer. In another dainty,
graceful designs, harmonious col
ors, the work of artistic people.
