The rejection of an erysipelas patient at the Cnrbontlnle hospital has given i Ise to some very uncomplimentary re nin! ks about tho Institution, some even going ko far as to cay they would nev er contribute nijalu to Its support. These persons evidently do not under stand that the place is primarily nn emergency hospital. Surgical cases and some others are admitted for pay to help maintain the Institution, but it is against the rule to ndmlKany pa tient whose disease will endanger the health of others. Under certain condi tions erysipelas Is considered communi cable and doctors deem It especially ofo leetlonable where, there ate surgical cases. It Is to bo hoped, in the interest of the worthy charity, that the forego, lilt? facts will be taken into nccoutit by those who have passed ad versa Judg ment on tho hospital director for re fusing to admit the case. Tho re ceiving ships do not accept naval re cruits who are married, and most of the married bluejackets in the Ameri can nnvnl service embarked on the sea of matrimony after their enlistments. Those who did not concealed the fact from the recruiting officers on the re ceiving ships that they were married. Some men seek a refuge In the navy, as many do In the army, from stormy matrimonial lives, nnd these men, knowing that they stand no show of acceptance If they confess to the soft Impeachment, reply, "Not nny, not much," when "Are you married?" is nsked them. Nothing Is done in the way of punishment to such men when, n few .months after their enlistment, they begin to forward portions of their wages to their wives through the pay masters. The married men, as a general tiling, send most of their monthly money to their wives through the pay olllces. Probably a majority of the chief petty officers In the I'nlted States naval ser vice are married men, and, as) their pay ranges from $30 to $75 u month, with bonuses for continuous service, their wives receive comfortablo In comes. There Is a chief master-at-arms on the China station at the pres ent time who has not seen Ills wife, who lives In Hrooklyn, for twelve years. He likes the station and has been en deavoring to induce his wife to move to Japan for years past. Put she likes Hrooklyn, and so there is a good natured deadlock in tile family. During all of bin absence the master-at-arms lias regularly sent his wife $:0 a month of his pay, and his boys have become men and gone to work for themselves, and two ot his daughters have grown into young women, got married, nnd had children botn to them since he last saw them as tots In short dresses. The Oiieut-lovlng master-at-arms will prob nbly return to the I'nlted States In a few months and llnlsh his naval career on the Ninth Atlantic station. Only chief petty olllcers or first-rnte petty olllcers in the American naval servh o can afford to maintain wives, nnd those who do get married for the pleasure they derive from the compan ionship of their wives for a couple of months at the conclusion of their three year cruises hnve to keep their noses pietty close to the graudstone to make ends meet at home, in the cities con tiguous to all American navy yards there are attractive young women who have the discernment to regard a mar riage witli a chier petty ofllcer or first rate petty ofllcer in the United States navy as it clever arrangement from a pecuniary point of view, and many of i'tuie .sams minor nnvnl olllcers are badly bitten by adventuresses who marry them solely for the purpose of securing n steady Income. The older men among tho petty officers get the worst of ft, as n rule, in this wny. Like the old pensioners of the civil war whose very oung widows havo lately been the subject of comment In the newspapers and In congress, the old time petty olllcers are Inveigled Into matrimony by scheming young women, anil when they go off on their cruises they Instruct their paymasters to for ward three-quarters of their monthly money to their wives. In very many cases, when they return to the port's at which they married these revenue-for-only wives, they :1ml them miss ing. Most of them apply immediately for divorces. Strange ns it may seem there ate many chief and first-rate petty olll cers In the I'nlted States navy today who have been bitten more than once In this) wnv, and a few of them are sufllclently fond to appear to be quite ready to be bitten a third time In the same manner. There Is a pretty but exceedingly designing young woman, still under thirty, now living In San Francisco, who has married and been divorced from three chief pettv olll cers In thee American naval service al ready, and It may be that sho Is not yet through.
