An nudlend? tlint tuxcd the seating capacity of tlic Lyceum wns present Inet night nt the opening of the engage ment of the SnceH. who are the most wonderful hypnotists before the public today, After the curtuln woh rung up Prof. Pago called for volunteers and thirty-flvo young men took seats on the 'stage. All but four of thcBo Professor .Sage, his wife and their assistant were lblo to get under tho hypnotic spell, ind the feats they had tho nubjects perform kept the audience convulsed Tivlth laughter for two hours. A young man named Mahon, who has somewhat of a local reputation as a -reciter, was put under tho Influence and directed to do n scene from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Ho did It In a manner that would huve reflected credit on Richard Mansfield. Ross Sur dain was another excellent subject. One of the novelties Introduced was a series of tableaux. Prof. Sago would place several of his subjects In vari ous attitudes and then make them per fectly rigid. The tableaux were given In a cabinet with appropriate costum ing and electric light effects and were very effective. A scene In a Chinese laundry was extremely ludicrous and the efforts of a half-dozen of the sub jects, each of whom believed he was a great orator, convulsed the audience. The Sages will give nnother enter tainment tonight and on Saturday they will give demonstrations of their power afternoon mid evening, t "Knst Lynn" at Linden. "Kast Lynn" Is' a drama, that never 6cems to grow old, probably because It's built on frallitles and Inconsisten cies: that are Intensely human, or at least nre supposed to bo Intensely human. Tho cold-blooded analyzer may fall to appreciate why Lady Isa bell found It necessary to elope with Sir Francis Levlson, and blight her own life and that of her husband, and bring disgrace on her children, but , thero Is an army of people who are Lnuite cure Lady Isabcll was prompted ty very human Impulses and are morc ver strongly tempted to tho belief that liey would act In much tho same man- Ipr under similar circumstances. To sure they would not, but for the Tirposes of tho play that makes no pllfforcnce. They think It all very human and that puts the audience In x receptive mood to start with; they are ready to sympathize with Lady Isnbell and if they belong to the gentler sox, to mingle their tears with hers. "East Lynn" Is now being produced at tho Linden theatre by the stock company of that house reinforced by Charles McKlnloy, a second cousin of President McKlnley, who Is cast for the role of Sir Francis Levlson. If his excellent work yesterday Is a fair guage of his ability he will add no little strength to the stock company. He has a graceful stage presence, a good voice and the nice judgment that tells him just when he has brought a scene to its legitimate climax. Miss Alice Kemp was much admired ns Lady Isabcll and Madame Vine. She enacted the roles with commendable naturalness and delicacy nnd with less of tho throaty gasps that tho average stage Lady Isabell finds It necessary Jdulgo in. 7. Mitchell made a manly and K- tB Archbald Carlvsle and J. N. ifiijSSSSeSi J(1 a very congenial role aa - vjcwwj.ord-Mountsoveni. Ho Is a young man who has a promising future before him. Miss Lucy Parker and Miss Pita Car- lyslo also enacted the roles assigned them In a manner worthy of special mention. The audiences that saw "East Lynn" yesterday afternoon and evening were composed largely of ladies. In fact, ever since tho house opened a large portion of Its patronage has come from the fair sex. "East Lynn" will bo re peated today and tomorrow afternoons and evenings. Tho Two Vngubunds. "Tho Two Vagabonds," "Ennlnle" under another name, was sung by the "Walte Opera company at the Academy of Music last night. Miss Morella sang tho role of Ennlnle, or Fanchon as It Is called in this version of the opera, In a very pleasing manner and Herman Waldo and Claude Amsden evoked much merriment by their droll Imper sonation of the two thieves. In the afternoon "Glrofle-Glrofla" was sung. At both performances the usual specialties were Introduced, and as a finale a number of artistic living pictures were Introduced that did not obtrude Indecency or vulgarity on tho public gaze in tho guise of art. This afternoon "Boccaccio" will be sung and tonight tho "Bohemian Girl." "A Secret Wnrrnnt." "A Secret 'Warrant" is a new ro mance by V. A. Tremayne und It will be presented at the Lyceum Monday next, March 7, by Robert Mahtell and his famous company. The play Is his torical, the scenes being laid In 1720 at the Court of the Regent Due d'Orleans. Mr. Mantell Is an Ideal romantic actor, In fact, in his particular line he stands alone and without a compeer. He has selected a repertoire of plays eminently fitted to his style and heroic physique, and In ho doing appeals to the admir ers of the stage heroes. "Two Llltlo Lords." Apropos of "Little Lord Fauntleroy," which will be the attraction at the Academy of Music for three nights and two matinees, commencing Monday, March 7, there are two children who alternate the part of "Fauntleroy" with this company and there Is quite a riv alry between tho youngsters for supre mocy In their performance. Onejjf the children U aged 7 and the other boasts of 8 years' existence on this trouble some earth of ours. Tho manager has a standing offer of $5 extra salary each wcck 10 tno cnim wno plays the part i best and the mize tn he ilnrirlori v, - ' vote of the company, so now each little ixra nas necome quite a politician in his method of influencing votes. It Is needless to say that tho $3 bill has been the means of keeping tho youngsters up to a mark of excellence in their work eo hard to reach In ones so young. "Tho Idotf Eye." Frank Daniels' Wtw opera, "The Idol's Eye," in whlcTt ho will appear here Tuesday night at tho Lyceum theatre, Is a story of the present day, Instead of delving Into somo arehaelo Rica! period of the past of which the public knows little and Is Inclined to care less. Of course, hundsome cos tunjes and picturesque scenery Is such a, necessary adjunct of comlo opera that u may not oo unregarded. But the librettist has In this Instance retained iH attractive feature by placing his story In Eastern India, so that ho may make use of Hindoos nnd Brahmins and Nautch girls nnd English soldiers for costumes', and temples nnd jungles und soldiers' barracks for scenery. In tho company supporting Mr. Daniels are Alf. C. Wheclnn, "Will Danforth, Maurice Darcy, Helen Redmond, Nor ma Kopp and Claudia Carlstedt. Tho excellent chorus heard In "Tho "Wizard of tho Nile" last year has been re-en-gaged. Victor Herbert has provided a scoro for tho opera full of fascinating melodies which promise to become very popular. PUPIL OP TOMMY RYAN. World's Champion's Sparing Pnrtnor is to ilox Jim Judge. Tho local sporting fraternity that Is, tho best Informed of them believe that Jim Judge, the undefeated local welter weight, Is going against tho best man In his experience when he meets Frank Hartley, of Blnghamton, before tlfu Amerlcnn Sporting club March 14 In Music hnll. Thero Is ample renson for holding Bartley In high esteem. He not only Is a pupil of tho world's champion welterweight, Tommy Ryan, of Syracuse, but was for nearly n year that wonderful boxer's sparring part ner. Some renson for tho belief that Judge has trouble on his hands appears tn the report that Jack iSkelly, of Brook lyn, who ns Judge's manager, has been trying the Scrnnton boy out In his re cent battles, has selected Bartley ns the best boxer available to give the Scrantonlan a final test. Bartley seems entitled to consideration If from only three of his battles, two draws of twenty and fifteen rounds with Johnny Loughlln, of Buffalo, and a victory In twelve rounds over Frank Smith, of Buffalo. Somo of Hartley's other victories were: Dan McMahon, of Ireland, 7 rounds: Mike Dwyer, of Blnghamton, 2 rounds; "Jersey" Sanford, of Brook lyn, 6 rounds; Louis Jester, of Blng hamton, 2 rounds (quit); George Rob inson, of Brooklyn, 3 rounds; Ed Haley, of Chicago, 3 rounds; Walter Nolan, of Chicago, 12 rounds; Pat Nagles, of St. Catherine's, Canada, 10 rounds; Billy Murphy, of New York, 0 rounds; Joe Crawford, of Denver, 1 round: Joe Daniels, of Buffalo, 3 rounds; Jack Slavln, of England, now of Mayfleld, 1 round. Bartley is now training with Jack McDonough, of St. Paul, and Tim Hur ley, of Susquehanna. He and Judge are' to weigh In at 142 pounds at 2 o'clock on tho afternoon of March 11. BACKUS TRAM WINS AGAIN. Load in Both Halves by n Smnll Margin.
