THE SCRANTON TRIBUNE. WKDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 1893. .WEDNESDAY, JANUAllY 26, 1S05T. V MEETING OF THE TRADES LEAGUE Hon. Lyman Gage (be Principal Speak cr at Philadelphia. THE SECRETARY TALKS ON FINANCE W. J. IJrynn I Quoted and Mqny of Ills MIs-Statcmcnti Ato Corrected. Tho Party Itniponslblo Tor tho Gold Monetary Strutclnrd. rhllndelpWa, Jan. 25. The seventh annual meeting1 of the trades leuftue of Philadelphia- was held tonltfit In, the Academy of Music, at which the prin cipal speaker was Hon. Lyman J. Quire, secretary of tho treasury, lnholdlns tonight's meotlnjr tho league makes a departure from Its usual custom of transacting iiuiely loutlne business at Its yearly sessions. The purpose In do ing this Is to enable the members to be addressed on subjects kindred to their nssoclatlon by prominent men. In stat-' ing Mils, V. V'. Foulkroad, president of tho leacue, introduced Secretary Gape. He was warmly received and held the attention of the large audience tluoughout lie spoke on the subject of "I-'lpance," nnd his lemarks were frcMltipntlv punctuated with applause. Spcretr.ry Gage, by way of lntroduc ti n, salt : Thero n?o two opinions on I lie money iiuestldi now, more or less (Irmly held by Uiomj who entettaln them. -The one riippoitt the le-establlshment of silver in the pihl'ege of fiee coinage at the mint at tho latio of 1C to 1, irrespective of all consequences, near or remote, nnd ulthrut regard to our membership in thi family of nations. The other opinion "s that tho present gold stnnd nil slmulu be maintained at nil cost until by international agreement the piesent dlpurlty between the commei Uilned b fact nnd he cited fiom sta tinl and the legal ratio of silver to gold shall be made to disappear. Tho uigument of the 10 to 1 advo cates, Seeretury Gage continued, is that gold having appreciated In value, prices of commodities have fallen and wages have been reduced. The statement that wages have been i educed, Hip speaker said, is not sta tistics of the commissioner of labor to show that within the period of 187J to l.v.'l. while prices of commodities have fallen 27'i per cent., wages have In-oieat-ed an average of ten per cent., tho wnge-eai nor thus reaping a double advantage by the greater purchasing power of the wages earned. KEPKRS TO BRYAN. Referring to a recent speech of Wil liam J. Bryan, In which the latter said -the dally papers have Items of news tin tinged under two heads the forma tion of trusts and the reduction of w.iges." tho secietary said Mr. Bryan cited no example of trusts, but referred to one industry in New England in which by reason of special conditions a reduction in the wage scale was under debate. He failed to state, con tinued the secietary, that only a few weeks nco the worsted manufacturers in Rhode Island granted an Increase of 20 per cent, in the pay of 25,000 opera tives and that in Philadelphia .numer ous woolen mills have lestared the ln creared wages of ISM. Mr. Bryan, he continued, cannot point to one Instance of an advance in wages between tho date of the Chicago convention of 1S90 and tho November election of that year, while since tho election many thousand idle men have obtained employment and many of those ilio had employment have re ceived increases in their wages. In support of this industrial revival. Sec ietary Gase Instanced the- window glass Industry, the rolling mills in Al abama, Maryland and Ohio; the coke industry of Western Pennsylvania, the pottery Industry of Trenton, and, he added. In nearly all iron and steel in dustries. Secretary Gage nlso took Mr. Bryan to task for having lecently said that "Our enemies boast that they have burled bimetallism." The secretary said: "His enemies, If he means the Re publican party, are not boasting that they have buried bimetallism. They proclaim themtelves Its friend: they approve It In their nlatform. The po litical head of that party has been ac tive to secure it under the only condi tions by which It can bs maintained, namely, international agreement, with open mints to both silver and gold." THE GOLD STANDARD, The secretary also quoted Mr. Bryan rs having said that tho gold standard was adopted 'without any party asking for It, nnd In reply to tlila, the secre tary said Thomas J I. Benton, tho lead er of the Democratic party in J834, had introduced a 'bill in tho senate which was passed and which restored gold to our cuirency systm and made It the monetaty standard. This wise act, he cald, was signed by President Andrew Jackson, the Democratic idol. The remainder of the secretary's speech was devoted to argument In fa vor of Improvements In our financial system, and also In support df the rec ommendation In his annual report to congress to commit the country moro thoroughly to tho gold standard and remove- ns far as posslbte doubts and tears on that point, and thus strength- ADWAY'S PILLS, Always Reliable, Purely Vegetable. A case that boa been In litigation for nineteen years was amicably settled yesterday. C. D. Huff, executor of the estate of John W. Huff, vyas the plaintiff, nnd the heirs of Ellsha Athcrton the defend ants. The case .Involved nineteen acres of land In Kingston township, valued at about $30,000. In 1847 Ellsha Athcrton deeded to John W. Huff eighty acres of land (more or less) situated back of Mattby. Huff held possession of tlio land under the deed for a period of thirty-three years, or until 1880, when the Atherton belts claimed that under their interpretation of the description a nlneteen-acre lot occupied by Huff was not covered by the deed of 1847 and they broucht suit against Huff to recover. The case was tried In the local courts and Huff won. The Ather ton heirs then carried the case up and the Supreme court ordered a new trial, which was held In due time, and the Athertons won. Huff then biought a new suit against the Athertons to recover possession, nnd tho same has been on trial before Judge George S. Purdy, of Honesdale, spe cially presiding, since Tuesday of last week. The work of hearing the evi dence took up all the time until Friday evening, when the jury was excused, until Monday morning In order to al low the attorneys time to nrg'ie a num ber of law points. When court recon vened yesterday, however, It was an nounced that a settlement had been reached. Under the terms of the settlement Huff is to get 74 acres of the original eighty ucres and the Athertons to pay nil the costs and also to pay Huff's lawyers. Thus of the nineteen acres In litigation Huff gets thirteen and tho Atherton heirs six ucies. The land is at present under lease by tho Atherton heirs, but they guarantee that the coal has not been taken out, if so, to pay for it. The litigation arose over the indefi nite description of the boundaries of the land conveyed by tho deed made in 1847, which gave an important line as starting at a point on Improved prop erty. The point has since disappeared, nnd as the nlneteen-acre tract was be tween two parcels of improved prop erty, It became a very important ques tion upon which piece of improved property the line started. John W. Huff, tho original plaintiff In the suit compromised yesterday, died about five years ago, and the ac tion lias since been continued by his son, C. D. Huff, as executor.
