C The Slater lndustilal College and State Normal School for Colored Peo ple, at Winston, N. C, Is an exceed ingly Interesting Institution. There w-re four Ideas prominent In starting it. 1. The vital importance of training for good citizenship. Z A belief that the negro should be taught to work In telligently with his hands ns well us to become acquainted with the branches usually taught In the schools. ?.. There wn givat need of a normal school for colored people a place where teachers should be taught how to teach. J. A negro colony where colored people only should live, owning their own homes, starting thi-lr own Industries nnd to a certain extent governing themselves. Some leading citizens became Interested In this work and donate a valuable nnd desirable tract of land for thf purpose. A small school house wan erected, then 'another and another, etc., until now the school occupies seven buildings. A new $10,000 hall has just been ereefd. The students made the brick for this hall in the college biick yard, burned them and assisted In laying them. At the last commencenrnl the girls appeared on the platform In neat white dresses which they themsvlves had cut and made, and the boys and pro fessors wore shoes mad? by the stu dents In the college shoe shop. The stables, barns, etc., were also built, by students. The farm Is a source of In come. Many teachers are attending the Normal department. Colonel McCluie, of the Philadelphia Times, made a special visit to the school 'and pronounces It the most promising work In the South. The lit tle colony Is an obj et lesson to the negro woild. Many neat, attractive cottages have been erected by the col ored people themselves, and ther- Is a happy little settlement around the college. The state of North Carolina has adopted the Institution as n Nor mal school and gives It about $.1,000 a year. Forsyth county also makes a donation each year nnd the college re ceives nld from the Peabody fund. Hut, upon private subscriptions the Institu tion must depivd largely for Its needs. W. A. lilulr. vice-president People's National bank. Winston, N. C. has consented to give any Information de sired and to receive subscriptions for the school.
