Illll FIFTEEN ROUNDS WERE TAA1E Ticlio Wns in tho Pink of Condition nnd Abbott Was Not, but tlioScrnn tonlnn Wns tho Victim oi Ovcr Cuutlon nnd thu Victory Contnlncd but Iiittlo Honor--At No Tlmo Was There l'rospcct of n (nick Finish. Tho lS-round clove contest between Stanton Abbott, of England, nnd John Tlghe, of this city, was decided in favor of the latter nt Laurel Hill park Inst night. The event took place in the dunclng pavilion and was witnessed by ubout 230 spectators. In more than ono respect the bout wan disappointing. At no tlmo was there any sovero fighting or any pros pect of the affair being decided in less than the fixed number of rounds and neither boxer did tho best work of which he wns capable. Abbott was hog fat and in no condition to work for even eight rounds, nnd Tlghe, though in the very pink of condition, was plainly a victim ot over-caution and fear of the ring knowledge, box ing nblllty and vicious hitting power of the Britisher. Kddle Coleman was agreed upon for referee after n. great deal of trouble and delay, which postponed the be clnnlng of the contest until 10.17 o'clock. Tho timekeepers were Wil liam Haeder and Al Rose, the Lacka wanna avenue hatter. In Tighe's cor ner were Dick Eavcrs, Pat Murphy and Paddy Hopkins, the two former com prising the backbone of tho National Sporting club, under whose ausplce3 the affair was given. Abbott was handled by Toby Gardner, John Kelly nnd Tonv Gordon. The men were to have weighed In at 13S pounds. Tlghe was not over that weight and was in ns good trim as a fighter could bo. Abbott was at least five pounds more in weight than the Scrnntonlan, but this wns a decided handicap nnd not an advantage, as tho extra weight was unmistakable fat, which was In evidence on all parts of his body. He was content to give a wonderfully clever exhibition of de fensive tactics, allowing Tlghe to jab away nt him from the first clang ot tho gong until the finish. Rarely did the ex-champion of England assume the aggressive, but when he did go at his man there was a menace and experi ence in his style which kept Tlghe busy with his feet. After fourteen rounds of tag anil few clinches the men came together for the wlndup. Tlghe had gained courage and went at his man In a more determined fashion and which might have been more effective It ho began early In the bout, but his prancing had tired him nnd his forced energy was not productive of any re sult. The only marks dn either man was a slight abrasion of tho skin on Tighe's forehead and a cut over Ab bott's left eye, received in the fifteenth round. Tighe's Jabbing leads had earned him tho decision given by Referee Cole mun and nobody was sorry when the bout ended at 11.10 o'clock. Tho first preliminary was one of four rounds at 130 pounds "between Mike Connors, of Peckvllle. and James Jack son, of Old Forge. What Jackson lack ed in science hi3 possessed in stiff punching ability but tho latter did not offset the superior cleverness of the PecUvlllo box:r who did most of the fighting and was justly given the de cision. Christ Rose, of the South Side, and Tony Gordon, of tho Nineteenth "Ward, met In a friendly thr-c-round exhibi tion bout In which no decision was given. Gordon proved an agreeablo surprise notwithstanding his awkward style and was surely the equal of his c-pponent In the number of rounds they fought. TWO NOTED CRACKS. ."UcAulille and Rynn to Box Hero Next Thursday Night. Jack McAullffe, of Brooklyn the once premier lightweight ot the world, and Tommy Ryan, of Philadelphia, one of the best fancied candidates for cham pionship honors In the county, have bam matched to box in this city next Thursday nlgh't. The men will meet In a ten round bout for a decision at Music Hall be fore the American Sporting- cltf. New York, Sept. 22. The boxing bouts scheduled to tako placo tonight at tho arena of tho Eastern Athletic club in Wllllamsiburg. were declared off. owlnc to the club's not having a jiroper license to allow boxing contests. The chief attrac tion scheduled was a ten-round, go be tween Jack McAullffe and Jack Downey nnd It was announced that this was set over until October 1, but In till probability this means an Indefinite postponement.
