Today's market was extremely Irregular, but tho aver age level of prices was lifted as a re sult of the day's operations. Tho strength shown was very aggressive In spots, but many of the shares recently active in tho market moved scarcely at all. The Vanderbilts were again a centre of strength on the reports of large increases in earnings and most of them advanced a point or more in the day's trading. New York Central advanced 1. Lake Shore also was taken in hand by the bull element dur ing tho final hour of trading and rushed up 2V4 per cent. The same element was Instrumental In hoisting the prlco of Pennsylvania 3 points, the subsequent reaction being about M. A Jump of 20 points in Consolidated Gas was also a sensational feature in the market. General Electric rose at one time nearly 2 points. There were conspicuous ex ceptions to tho strength of the market, such stocks as Missouri Pacific, Atchi son preferred, Northern Pacific pre ferred, Louisville, Southern preferred and Chesapeake and Ohio lagging quite heavily In the advance In some cases, closing below yesterday. A number of the industrials were conspicuously weak, Including Sugar preferred, Leather preferred, Illinois Steel, Ten nessee Coal and Bay State Gas. Sugar common, which sold ex dlv. today, lost all of its early gain before the close. The coalers were somewhat heavy dur ing tlie day, but Improved slightly be fore tho close, apparently In sympathy with tho lively advance In Ontario and Western and S. and W. preferred. Chi cago Gas and Laclede Gas were quite strong, the former advancing nearly threo points and the latter four points, but both showing a subsequent reac tion. Totnl sales, 621,248 shares.
