With a snort of terror tho hors es sprang to one side, throwing Darrow off the machine, but the knives kept up their destructive work, and oil tho air was filled with pieces of dismembered hcrpcnts. As soon as he struck the ground Darrow seized a stick and nttacked the rattlers. They were so numerous that every blow killed a snake or two, and at last he fought his way through the myriads of squirming reptiles and followed his horses to the barn. They wero nono the worse for their experi ence, but the mowing machine wns literally gummed up with pulverized rattlesnakes. The bodies of 1?C snakes were counted at the scene of the slaughter, and Darrow estimates that there wero not less than two hundred rattlers In the bunch. It was a large day for snakes. Whitney.
