About the hardest game of the season to lose was that which tho Canucks bagged from us on Saturday by a score of 10 to 9. With the tally 7-2 ugalnst them the Miners struck a terrific bat ting gait In the eighth inning, knocked Dlneen out of the box, went after Sta Iey with the same end in view, piled up seven runs, which gave them a lead o two.and then lost the game in the ninth inning because Glllon weakened and gave three singles and a base on balls nnd because Bonner made an error in attempting a double play that would have made It possible for tho Miners to win by a score of 9 to 8. During tho fusllado of hits in the eighth there occurred about ns deafen ing and lusty a period of rooting as was ever heard by tho same 6lzed audi ence at Athletic park and tho yelling had much to do with rattling Dlneen and encouraging the Miners to hit the game out. The Canucks wouldn't have mnde their first -three runs but for Glllon's oases on halls, and with two out In the seventh White would never have got a borne run and scored Lush from second if O'Brien instead of Boyd had been in right field. So out of the first seven runs possessed by the Canucks, Glllon was responsible for three and two were due to O'Brien's absence from his regu lar position. MINERS' FIRST-TWO. In the second inning Boyd's two-ba6er and Massey's single earned a run for the Miners and another was scored in tho fourth on Bonner's single, Massey's life nnd a single by Magulre. Tho cannonading in the eighth fur nished intense excitement. O'Brien opened with a double hit to left-center and was followed by singles by Wal ters and Beard and a walk to Boyd be fore Bonner Hew out to Freeman. Mas sey singled, Magulre hit to left for two bases and Gunson singled tho sixth run home when Dlneen was taken from the box and Staley substituted. Glllon singled Gunson to second and. each advanced a base on a passed ball, O'Brien hit a liner to center and Gun son scored. Glllon ought to have got In but was caught a yard from the pinto on assists by McHale and Taylor. That made the second out, seven runs in nnd tho tally 9-7 against tho visitors. Wal ters singled, but the sldo was retired on Beard's grounder to Smith. The Canucks failed to score in thnlr half ns did the Miners In the first of tho ninth, although Bonner singled with ono oit. Glllon was unequal to tho strain and weakened In the final half. Taylor hit one which got safely past Magulre. Casey wus sent to bat In place of 8ta ley and sincled to right field. A base on balls to .Lush filled the bases. A, CRITICAL PLAY. Here it was that Bonner fell down. Ho had hurt his thumb quite badly earlier In the earns and this accident had much to do with his costly en or. White hit a urounder which Bonner stopped near the batr. He ran to the hag intending to touch It nnd get the ball to first in time to make a double play. He reached tho bag all right, but dropped the ball. A run had been scored on the play, which was expected, but tho bases were full again and nobody was out. instead of thero. being two out and a runner on third only. McGann was fanned, but McHale hit to center and scored tho n6cessary run. Tn detail: SCRANTON. A.D. R. II. O. A. 13. O'Brien.
