WHIRLS OF THE WHEEL 1 0 2 0 11 1 0 5 0 lu 0 0 0 0 I-'J Pernnton's first defeat out of flvo games played was experienced yester day. Herndon, the Rochester pitcher, was the cause of It, nnd thereby hangs nn examplu of one of the peculiarities ot the national game. Last year when Herndon was with Iluifn lo. If the Miners were not hitting him freely, tney had him so high In the air that he finished his games under protest. Yesterday, with poor support around him to begin with, he preserved his equilibrium and gave but four hits to what Is believed to be the heaviest hitting team In the league. After the fourth Inning ho gave but one hit nnd a base on balls and had two strlke-outs. Glllon was showing the Hag of dis tress early In the argument, but with tho good support he was receiving It wns hoped he would steady up. The hopes of 1,400 spectators fell, however, when In the fourth Glllon wns touched up three times for four bases and hit a batsman From then on It was all over but the shouting. GOOD OUTFIELD WORK. "Pop" Lyttle. the Wllkes-Harre vet eran of many a hard campaign, ap peared In right field for Rochester, Lynch going to left and Botttjnus to center. RIehter played Mulvey's posi tion at third. Mulvey having been called to Providence by the death of his mother. Roth Lynch and Lyttlo fielded In brilliant style. Rochester's Inflolders had but little opportunity to show their paces In the Held, but each of the team got a slice of Glllon, tho younger Shannon excepted. The home team got an early lead of two runs on one error each by Lynch and RIehter and an outfield fly In tho first, and In the third Hoyd's two-bagger and Patterson's wild throw to first of a ball batted In front of the plate by Glllon. The final run was earned In the fourth on Ialy's single, Heard's two-buser and Mossoy'B fly to center. The Rochester merriment began In the last of the fourth, when threo runs came, In on a double, single, hlt-bv-pltcher, another single and Massey's missed grounder. Threo more runs were added In the fifth on n base on balls, three singles with Kagan's error sandwiched in, an outfield lly and a single. The nlleged fistic carnival given by the "Hoffman club" at Music hall last night could hardly be described a a distinct success by the scant 1G0 specta tors who saw It. "Hilly" O'Urion, of Buffalo and "Hon" "Wilson, tho colored boxer of Danville, wcie expected to furnish the star at traction of the evening in a 15-round go. O'Hrlen disappeared during tho preceding night nnd Charles Ramsey, colored, of Wllkes-Harre, was engaged to take tho other's place. Ho and Wil son fiddled a.nd faked for flvo and a half rounds when James Judge ordered them to their corners and declared tho event off. Among the several preliminaries tho one that should have furnished good sport was stopped by nn accident to one of the contestants. Stephen Judge, of tho South Side, and Michael Kane, of Mlnookn, were the principals, In the second round with honors about even Judge led low and missed. Knno clung to Judge's shoulder nnd fell heavily when the latter Btralghtencd up. He had to bo assisted to his cor ner. Eddie Coleman, who was refereelns the bout, very properly declined to give n decision. It was arranged that tho pair should go on for four rounds later but Kane did not sufficiently recover from his fall and the event was un decided. Abel Holland nnd "Hilly" Madison, 150 pound colored men, opened tho en tertainment In nn awkward C-round mixup. The latter was groggy when the last round ended and tho decision went against him. "Kid" IJrown and "Ed" Cacey, both colored, of this city, were to have sparred six rounds. What the latter did not know about the manly art could hardly be mentioned, nnd it wns little wonder that when floored in tho third round he lay faking on tho floor and permitted himself to bo counted out The punishment he had received from the beginning made the handful of spectators glad that he was willing to be n quitter. Admit ers of the legitimate art of box ing are many In Scranton and may be relied upon to patronize exhibitions by clover m 'n, but the sure way to kill the sport Is by trotting1 out Just such a lot of mixed ale scrappers as appeared last night Judge and Kauo excepted.
