J. Thomas, the select coun-' cilmnn from the Fourth ward, Is now the lust survivor of the terrible acci dent that occurred on the twenty-llrst day of March, 1S6S. It will ho remem bered that seventeen robust miners left their happy homes, on that memorable morning, little thinking that the ma jority of them were then wending their way to their llnal goal on earth. They reached the head of the shaft between sl and seven o'clock In the morning, and a few minutes later entered the carriage in buoyant spirits. The en gineer signalled the footman, who was stationed at the foot of the shaTt, that the carriage was being lowered, and It was started downward on Its ill-fated course, on tb a depth of one hundred nnd eighty feet below the surface. Alas! before' they had descended many feet one of the links of the main chain of the rope to which the carrluge was attached broke, and seventeen noble Bouls wen; hurled to the bottom with the velocity of an unbi idled cyclone The men realized their perilous position at once; they know that they were de- "W. J. THOMAS. Fcending at a furious speed. They were powerless and nothing could be done. They prepared themselves the best they could to meet the frightful inevit able. It came with a tremendous crash that could be heard all over the mines a crash that shattered the happy homes of thirteen brave miners, and made fatherless) many little innocent souls. It was a heartrending scene. "When assistance came to the rescue, It w.s discovered that several souls had already taken illght to their eter nal homes, and while the thirteenth was conveyed to his home his soul also took its final farewell. Only four were left to tell the frightful tale W. J. Thomas, the present honest and able select councilman from the Fourth ward; Ilosle Davies, who died several years afterwards, and John G. Jones and Owen Huggerly, both of whom died recently, thus leaving Mr. Thomas the' only survivor of the terrible catastro phe. These four unfortunate men were badly shattered anl were incapacitated for many months from doing any work, and even Mr. Thomas was so terribly injured, that had it not been for expert medical attention, and the magnificent nursing of a devoted wife, lie also, would have fared the same fate as his mo'i unfortunate companions. Ho was confined to his room for seven weary months. His worse injuries were of an Internal nature, although he had to wear knee caps and also have his body bandaged for several years afterwards In order to give the necessary strength to pursue his dally occStlon; and even now, in cold weather, he suffers pain in his limbs from the effects of the terrible accident, but he still works in the mines. Being a prominent citizen of the West Side, and a leading council man, it would not be out of place to give a short sketch of ills career since he arrived in this country thirty-six years ago. He has always worked in the mines. He was born at Merthyr Tydvll In the year 1843. He came to this country in May 7, 1S59, His first American home was at Dover, N. J. He remained there a few years, and then came to Scranton, where he has resided ever since. He married his wife, who is the daughter of the late Mr. Messech Weeks, a sturdy old citi zen in his day, In May, 1SG4, and nine children have been born unto them. Three of the children are dead. They buried a bright and estimable son in October, 1S0G, in his seventeenth year, which caused the family much grief. Mr. Thomas is very popular in and around the mines, and also in the ward in which he resides. He represents the Fourth ward in the present select coun cil and is distinguished for his unflinch ing integrity and great usefulness. He served a term also in the common coun cil with the same distinction and hon est purposes. "Bill" Thomas' (us he is familiarly called by his friends) word Is as good as his bond, and woo to the man that approaches him on any mat. ter having the slightest taint of crook edness. He is a rugged Republican and one of the noblest Welsh citizens of Scran ton. THE VEX. ARCHDEACON PRYS. The Yen. Archdeacon Prys for by that name lie is best known in Wales, or Archdeacon Merwnydd was born at Gerdl Dluog, in the parish of Clandecyn, lu 1541. He was educated at St. John's college, Cambridge, and after having received holy orders, was Instituted to the rectory of Ffestiniog, 1072, was made Archdeacon of Melrconelhshlre In 1676, and canon of St. Asaph In 1G02. Ho was a learned divine, and a dis tinguished poet. Hq was the uuthor of the metrical version of the Welsh psalms still in use; in the preface of Dr. Morgan's Bible the archdeacon Is mentioned as one who had greatly as sisted In the first translation of the Bible Into Welsh. It Is said this ver sion of the psalms was brought about In this way: In his time there was no collection of hymns for the use of churches, and to Introduce singing to tlie service of his church ho versified one psalm regularly for every time ho had a Welsh service in his church until the whole were sung there before they were published. Ills version of the psalms were first printed in London In 1C21. Archdeacon Prys was as well ac quainted with the rules of Welsh poetry ns any man, and ho says with regard to the texture and versification of our best poems, "No bards In any language oyer surpasses the Welsh," "Of nil the tissues ever wrought On the Parnassian hill, Fair Cambria's web, In art and thought, Dlsulaya the greatest skill," Ills poetical ctjnipostldns.are many, but so far preserved In manuscript, the most remarkable of which are in his poetical controversy with William Cyn wal, of Pen Machno, consisting of C4 poems. Prefixed to Dr, paylcs' "Walsh Gram mar," which Is" dedicated to, the arch deacon, aru s6mo eloirant Latin verses by Prys In recommendation of the work, where Uq, mentions that ho was then'SG years of', age. The Verses are dated 1G21, and translated thus Into English by the' Rev. J, Walters, rector of Llandotlgh, author of the "Welsh and English Dictionary," They are as follows: Yo soii3 of fame, with every science fraught (One taught at Sens and one at Oxford taught), Exert their skill our language to restore That. Never were better four pillars of the venerable Welsh language grouped together. NOTES. Miss Hilda Wilson, the celebrated sing er, is a niece of Mr. Hugh Waddle, of Llanelly. During the lato Dr. Morris' principal ship of the Brecon Memorial college, close upon 2o0 ministers sat under his tuition. The "Cerddor" for December contains, among other attractions, a character sketch of Mr. Harry Evans, the famous Dowlals choir leader. Dafydd ab Gwllym, the great love poet of Wales, died D2S years ago, and In calling attention to the fact a writer in one of the Welsh weeklies remark: "When we realize that his remains have been lying burled for the last live and a quarter cen turies.lt is strange that his language is so easily understood in the present century." The well-known Welsh missionary, the Rev. Bowen Rees, who has been laboring under the London Missionary society, a: InyatI, Matabeleland, Central Africa, has just arrived in Wales. W, H. Reese Is at present staying at the homo of his youth In Glamorganshire. During the last Muta bele rebellion the experience of Mr. and Mrs. Reese were of exceptional peril and trial. One of the mothers appealing before the Pembrey School Board recently for tno irregularity of her child, scored rath er heavily over the members. When she appeared on the scene, tlio Board too hastily concluded that she was a monog lot, and presumed, In her hearing, that she desired 'to speak In the vernacular. "Just as you please," she answered, "eith er will do for me. I will take whichever you llko best." Mr. T. II. Thomas, R. C. Among other speakers and entertainers from tho present date to tho end of the session uro tho Rev. J. T, Job (Isawel), the Rev. Elvet Lewi (Elved), Watcya Wyn, Madame Martha Harries,, tho Rev. M. Morgans (Cross Hands), and the Rev. T. Johmj (Llanelly). Tho Scriptural injunction a3 to the ab surdity of hiding one's light under a bushel Is applicable to societies no less than to individuals. The Pontypildd Ladies' choir did well at Llandudno, for wo have the testimony of tlio adjudica tors that they ran the winners very e'.oso Indeed. Thuy did better at tho Cardl'l exhibition eisteddfod, for there, under two of the samo adjudicators as otllelated at Llandudno, they vanquished the victors. Tho tables were entirely rovorsed, Lon don taking second, and Pontyprld 1 taking the premier position. Having thus dem. onslrated their superiority 111 Hie com petitive arena, tho Ladles' choir from Pontypridd are courting success on con cert platforms, and seem in a fal- way of securing It. Many Important engage ments in English towns have been offered them, and tours are being arraugni. Eynon Davies fears that another ten or may be twenty years must etup?e before we shall see In Wales one strong theologl. cal college for all tho Nonconformist de nominations. This seems a pesslmlstl; view to take, Public opinion Is surely, if not voiy rapidly, ripening In fat or of such a combination, and the progress made In this direction during the last six or eight years has been most remark able. Tho Culvlnlstlc Methodists have long since taken a practical step in throw ing tlio doois of Uala to students of ull socts. The amalgamation of Bala and Trefecca is nieiely a question of time.
