NAKED LA MI CAUSES TROUBLE
Fire Gaining Ilcadway-I.ist of the In
jured Mlnera-Rescuing Party
Reports That None Have
Been Entombed. i
Wllkes-Harre. Pa.. Jan. 29. At about
4 o'clock this afternoon a second explo
sion of gas took place and a fire Is now
raging In the workings.
A gang of fire lighters composed of
mine firemen were In the mine at the
time, and as soon as the report was
heard they rushed to the spot, where
they found a nu tuber of men burned
and Injured. lnstuntly everything
was done to assist their companions
who were sent to the surface us soon
as the signal could be given.
The men burned and Injured are:
Charles Dougherty, Pi-tiiglo Hill. In
jured In the ribs.
Joseph Jones, Dorrnnceton, fire boss.
badly burned about face and head.
John Edwards, Luzerne, burned
about face und head: not seriously.
Philip Rundel, Forty Fort, burned
about the face and head.
John Robbins, Luzerne, burned on
face und heud.
Samuel Phillips, general Inside fore
man, seriously burned ubout face, head
and hands.
The mine hud not been working to
day owing to a party of timbermen do
ing some necessary work In the Coop
er vein which is ubout 1.S00 feet north
from the foot of the opening. The llrst
explosion was caused from a lamp enr
rled by William Z. Phillips, one of the
timbermen, who was slightly burned.
At this writing (6.30 p. m.) word
comes from the mine that the fire ap
pears to be gaining hendway, and un
lesH it can be checked will do great
damage. It Is also claimed that there
are more men In the pit who have not
yet escaped.
At 7.30 o'clock tonight Inside Super
intendent Benjamin Hughes informed
the United ress reporter that It was his
opinion that the fire would be under
control before many hours. The report
that other men were entombed in the
mine is untrue. The rescuing party
have Just returned after making a
careful search and report that there is
no one in the mine. Extra pumps are
being put In place and hose stretched
to the face of the fire, which is con
lined mainly to the woodwork, and if
it can be extinguished before reaching
the coal the loss will not be heavy,
but if the coal catches fire It may be
months before work can be resumed.
