Republicans Plan te Have Congress Quit the First of June Speaker Reed Anxious That This He Accomplished, as ll Would lie Beneficial to Ills Presidential Can liUiae). Washington, Jan. 26. If the plans of the Republican leaders of the house do not niiscurry. congress will adjourn not later than the llrst of June,. Every thing Is belns done with this In view. Speuker Reed himself is purticulurly anxious that this should be done. As the Republican convention meets the middle of June, it will be decidedly ad vantageous to have completed the work of congress before thut UHsembles, and it would be regarded as a feather in his cap. Chairman Cannon, of the house committee on appropriations, said to day that the work on' the appropria tion bills was being hurried as rapidly as possible, and that as there Is "no hope for legislation of an economic or of any other kind, in view of the condi tion of the senate and of the attitude of the president, the Interests of com merce and business demand an early adjournment." Mr. Cannon states that it will not be the fault, of the house If congress does not adjourn early. It can be said that there will be little If any change In the appropriations made by this rongress. They will be smaller If anything. There does not seem to be much hope of any great in crease in the appropriation for the con struction of new ships, or for coast de fenses. Up to the present time the house hns made noticeable progress with its appropriation bills, three hav ing already been passed by the house, making the best record known. CARELESS WATCHMAN. POSTPAID TIE WORLD OF BUSINESS Wall Street Review. , New York. Jan. 25. After a slight hesi tation at the opening the railway and mis cellaneous stock market developed con siderable strength. The pause In the up ward movement in the early dealings was the result of lower prices from London which disconcerted operators who had ex pected heavy buying orders from abroad to follow the sharp rise In the local mar ket at the close yesterday. Soon after the opening, however, local operators turned buyers again and In a little while under the Influcnre of these purchases, the en tire list mcved up rapidly. A trader who in the past has been credited with lm- I pnriant movements in the Industrials was I said to be at work again on the bull side i of the account, and this led to covering of 1 short contracts allalong the line. There was little news afloat to affect values although the bank statement In some quarters was accepted as an Indication of the success of the new government loan. The particularly strong slocks were the Industrials, the Grangers, Baltimore and Ohio, Jersey Central and Western Union. The advance In prices ranged from r to 14 per cent, and was well distributed. Speculation closed nrm with prices at or near the best of the day. Total sales wvre 114.571 shares, including 17,100 shares Su gar. Furnished by WILLIAM LINN. ALT. FN A CO., correspondents for A. P.
