The Joy Leaf club attended In a body the reception of Sir. and Mrs, Frank Laux, who were united by the holy bonds of matrimony this morning at the Herman Catholic church, Sir. Laux Is well known among the boys of the Vpper F.nd as a congenial and ex perienced railroader. He has thd re spect of his many friends, who wish him many? successes In his future career. The bride, Iiss Mary Kelly, is much respected by her many friends as an affable young lady. .Macnnerehor .Masquerade The Beethoven Maennerchor held their tenth annual masquerade ball at Armory hall. It was one of the most pleasing of any that they have ever held and was attended by a very jovial crowd. The dancing In disguise was kept up until 12 o'clock, when the masks were removed and much merriment fol lowed. A programme of twenty-five numbers was danced, and Gill and Gil lespie's orchestra rendered excellent music. M. J. Buckley was master of ceremonies, and was ably assisted by the following floor committee: Joseph J. Kern, Ed. L'ffalussey and Kd. Schassler. The committee on arrange ments was as follows: Albert Sutler, Max Ludwig. Theodore D. Brltlgan, and William Fedder. The costumes representing the royalties of the .old country were excellent. Of the many different Ideas of masquerade too nu merous to mention were Indians, ad vertizers, and members of sterner sex disguised as young ladies and were, before removal of the mask, considered the belles of the ball, so excellent were their representations. People of Plttstou keep abreast of the times; they read The Tribune. The-regular league game of basket call will be played at Armory hall on Friday evening, March 1, between the Young Men's Christian association teams of IVllkes-Barre and Plttston. The southern Iron trade Is quiet, with prices unsteudy. . Iron and steel are no more artlve, recent advances being barely maintained. Seventy-nine railrouds show ero.ss earn ings for the first week of February of JJ.813.W3, a comparative decrease of fSM, 310. Tho Pennsylvania railroad will soon con nect with the Ohio Southern, which is to be extended Into Lima, O., and north ward. The outlook In the soft coal industry Is suld to be more settled, owing to ef forts to form a pool, und steadier prices and wases are expected. Gross earnings of 13S railroads for tho year lbl were Sb7.&.1i,til, und net fMl, 07:',872, a decrease, respectively, of 11.1 and 11.5 per cent, from 1SS3. In ISS'3 a sim ilar comparison showed a decrease of ?.6 per cent. In groaand 3.4 per cent, in net. The Pennsylvania, is now preparing plans for l.UOU gondola cars, and the awards for building these cars will bo given out before long. They will bo as signed to the lines west of Pittsburg. The report that the Pennsylvania has con tracted for l.UUO cars to be built at the Ohio Fall Car works is untrue. Philadelphia, Feb. 2iS. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation company was held at the company's otllce In this city today. The present management was re-elected without opposition. The election for a board of managers resulted: Calvin Par dee, president: Joseph S. Harris, Kdward W. Clark, Francis K. Cope, Charles Par rlsh, James M. Wlllcox, Kdward Lewis, Samuel Dickson, Abram S. Hewitt, Thomas MeKean, Charlemagne Tower, Jr., and Edward S. Buckley. On Friday last New Jersey Central se curities declined to the lowest price in seven years. The annual report Is now be ing mado up and the showing Is undoubt edly a bad one. It Is understood the De cember business showed a decrease of some $40,000 in net earnings as compared with the preceding year, but the llBures will not be disclosed until the annual re port is issued. I'pon the basis of the re ports already made public the company earned over 2 per cent, for Its stockhold ers in ISM. What the report may show is another matter. It Is possible the com pany may claim that JI2S.000 interest has been paid it by the Lehtsh and Wllkes Barre Coal company and may make a charge of "advances to other companies" to balance the account. Philadelphia Record: As the pooling bill hn3 been indullnitely killed for a year It follows that the coal companies need not postpone their allotments and pro posed agreements any longer. Tho only difference Is that Instead of a binding, penalty-inftlcting combination that would have been adjusted to the terms of any pooling bill that might have been adopted, there will be a sort of "gentleman's agree ment," accompanied by some sort of un derstanding concerning the percentage to be allotted to each company. There has been considerable talk of employing one sales agent for all the anthracite -producers who .should issue ofiers therefor In accordance with prearranged propor tions, and It Is possible. In the absence of tho pooling bill, that such a plan may find favor. The experiment to be made by the Penn sylvania railroad upon one of Its branch lines of running trains by electricity may not havn In view the further equipment of that road with electric power In place of steam, but the test soon to be made by the New York and New HHven road on a branch near Boston, has ahead of It tho possible equipment of all the branch lines with electric service, and If this proves satisfactory, the substitution of electricity for steam partly or entirely upon the main line of that road. The fact that the New Haven company has created an electric service, and has called to its head one of the ablest of the man agers of electric railroads In this country, is a sufficient proof of the earnestness of the corporation In this matter. One of its branch lines, that by w hich through pas sengers from Philadelphia and Washing ton are carried to the main line without transfer through New York city, was equipped some time ago with light curs, and that was done li the view of the pos sible unn of electricity. Some of the of ficers of the company tiave had an Inipres Blon changed to conviction recently, no that they now firmly believe that within the next five years we shall see many of the railroads of this country either adopt ing electricity or preparing to do so.
