The Mendelssohn Choral society have

required and there was not that num
ber pledged to go. It has been decided
to enter the competition at Taylor, and
one at Carbondale on Thanksgiving
Day. Rehearsals for these will begin

The funeral of Lewis E. Jones, of Os
well court, who died after a lung Ill
ness on Wednesday evening, will take
place this afternoon from tho home of
John E. Jenkins, where he boarded.
Interment will be made in the Wash
burn Street cemetery. Mr. Jonea was a
widower and had but one Qhlld, who Is
now In Europe.

and when she was tired enough to feel
like throwing her best parlor chair at
any visitor who might come, a book
peddler presented himself.
"Madam," he began, "I have
here "
"Stop' right there," she interrupted,
"have you a mother?"
"I used to have, madam."
"Have yoa a wife?" ' -
"Yes, madam, and I'm trying to make
a living for her, and 1 have here "
"Stop there!" she Interrupted again.
"If a man came to her when she was us
dead tired as I am and made matters
worse by trying to sell her a book, what
would you want her to do to him?"
"I should want her to buy his book:
as soon as she could and get rid of him,
madam."
"Well," she snapped, "I'm glad I'm
not your wife. Now you get out of this,
quick, or she won't huv as poor an ex
cuse for a husband as she already has,"
and he stood not upon, the order of his
going.

They were conducted by Rev. R. S.
Jonea, D. D., who was assisted by Rev.
B. 1. Evans, of the West Side. The
pall bearers were taken from among the

Daniel Price, John IX Evans, Richard
E. Jones, John Henry, David Jones and
William B. Jones. It was one of the
largest funerals ever seen In this part
of the city.

Few men possess the temerity evinced
by a young man named Peter Sullivan,
about 21, year's of age, who attempted
to burglarize the hotel of Patrick Don-
' nelly, on Beech street, yesterday morn
j lng at 10 o'clock. At 8 o'clock In the
morning Sullivan first went into Don
nelly's hotel. His actions were sus
picious and he did not remain long.
About It) o'clock Mr. Donnelly left the
hotel and went to the next house. In
a few minutes he returned to the bar
room of the hotel. When he entered
he saw Sullivan behind the bar Indus
triously rltling the cash drawer and he
rushed quickly and grappled with him.
In the encounter Mr. Donnelly threw
Sullivan to the floor and held him there
by the throat. Three dollars and a half
In silver fell to the floor, and as that
appeared to be all In Sullivan's posses
sion Mr. Donnelly then kicked him out
of doors. When the robber got to the
street he commenced to throw stones
j at the windows and Mr. Donnelly had
to flro two shots to scure him away.
He left behind a pair of overalls und
! a drilling jacket and a memorandum
j book fell from his pocket. The book
j had on the cover the compliments of
I Miller Bros., wholesale merchants, of
! Dwight, 111. Sullivan told Mr Don
. nelly on' his first visit that he was a
steam fitter in search of work. It has
been learned that he arrived in Scran
. ton but a few weeks ago and Is staying
I with a family on Plttston avenue. He
' has relatives on the South Side.
