RUN ON LIBERAL PRINCIPLES
The Primary Aim Is to Give Dollar
for Dollar to the Public Capable
Salespeople Employed to Assist
Customers in Making Selections.
Policy Employed in Selecting and
Dealing With Employes.
Probably ono of the most startling
examples of the pluck, push and suc
cess that characterizes the typical
Seranton business man, is found iu tho
firm which conducts The Fair store, at
400 and 409 Lackawanna avenue.
Some facte in relation to tho men
who conduct this emporium, the liberal
treatment of employe, their broad
business policy and tlio peculiar fea
tures, winch seem bound to make Tho
Fair one of this city's most successful
enterprises, may be of interest to the
public generally.
While E Friend and F. J. Royl, the
proprietors of ilm store, are iu every
HOiii'e of the Word CitiZlllS of Senmton,
they havo had vast experiences in New
York and Brooklyn, from which their
patrons must necessarily get th bene
fit. Mr. Friend bus had twenty years'
experience in the dry goods buaintsi
and In s been tio successful mumtger of
some o the largest retail establish
ments of New York. The bntiae life
of T. J. Ruyl has been entirely devoted
to the dry goods business and to nil
which pertain to it, lie is also origi
nally from Brooklyn, and iu especially
familiar with the wauls and needs of
his customers.
TUB VHrTTUBK RCCCSCK3FUI..
When it was Known that these two
gentlemen contemplate 1 establishing a
permanent business on a largo scale,
several of their friend advised them
not to chooio the preiont location of
Tho Fair, owing to tho fact that several
enterprises which havo been conducted
thoro have been uulucky. The Fair
Una, however, wero undeterred, and
their wisdom in locating where they
did is evidence 1 by the rush of busi
ness going on in the store and the suc
cess which hue crowned their effort.
O io of the firMi uiovci was n com
plete renovation and change of the
store. A new and attractive show
fron". was built and a display window
erect. d along tho Hide ot the store on
the continuation ot Wyoming avenue.
Within a few weeks millinery and
clo.ik departments were located on the
second ibor.
Since the day of the opening, April 9,
Mr. Friend and Mr. Royl nave been
l igiily gratified at the condition of
their trade, Flfiy-flVS cl.rks are
employed Monday, Saturday and on
i x'ra busy days.
The mention of employes recills one
policy of Tbe Fair which meets the op
, rival ot its oustomer. In the first
place, no novices ure regularly em
ployed. All are intelligent and well
paid salesmen and saleswomen. Prob
ably ths liberal policy of Tuo Fair to
ward its employe is not exeeeded by
any store in the city. There) is no dock
age of wages owing to sickness or un
avoidable nbcenco or tardlnes. An
atmosphere of freedom is around tbe
employes, n::d this liberty is not
aim ed. In return for this kindness
tho help are assiduous and attentive to
The Fair's patrons and to the interests
of their employer as well.
TtlBRB 13 NO PISCiUMtSATION.
Another commendable feature of tho
Bale system is tho fact the clerks are
not representative of nny one nation
ality. American, German, Irish and
Welsh people are employed. It is the
policy of the firm to carry regular lines
of good?, aud tlio absence of od ls-.md-ends
job lots and other trash usually
found in dry goola establishments is a
foaturo which please the public. Th
management buys for cosh and caters
to a constituency composed of a good
class of people.
The Fair store always contains com
plete lines of goods not generally found
in other pliw.i 3 of lis kind. Millinery
goods, ladies' and gonis' furnishings,
infants' wear, boys' clothing, men's
und boys' hats, boots and shoes in
fuct ovcrylhing tho most exacting cus
tomer dosires is curried iu stock.
Attor considering tho above facts it
is not making any mistake to predict
continued success for The Fair.
