Miss Estella Phinney. of Court street,
Park Place, who was injured on the Prov
ident e road a few weeks ago by the car
riage in which she was riding being struck

The entertainment in the Park Place
Methodist Episcopal church Tuesday
night was a success. Through tie zeal
and untiring exertions of the Rer. Mr.
Jones, who worked assiduously to make
the occasion a success, every portion of
the programme was carried out in ex
cellent style. The ladies and gentlemen
who so cheerfully contributed their
talent acquitted themselves with great
credit.
M. Burke, of the Eureka House, says
that the Fire Escape have re-orgauized
and will make au effort to form a fire
compauy lor Park Place.
The condition of th sidewalk from
John Hawks' residence to the Griffin
homestead is in u wretched condition.
Dr. Ross has reported the matter to the
street commissioner.

For some time past thieves have been

coops in various portion of trp West
Side, but all ett'ort to bring tht) perpe
trators to justice have failed. At au
early hour ycsterd.ty morning thieves
visited the roosts of John Uuculey on
North Sumner avenue and stole eight
of the fowls. When Mrs. Ilucklev
went to the coop for the ptirpOlt of
feeding the hens, siie was greatly sur
prised 00 fiiidiug a large pool of blood
and the heads of several chickens
strewn about.
The thieves entered through a back
gate, as the marks of a large pair of
boots are imprinted to the snow. Other
footprints show where they had tried to
gat in through the side of the shed.
The marauders must have curried a bag
to put tbe fowls in as there would
otherwise been a trail of blood from
the several necks. No clue has been
obtained as to who the doers of tbo
mischief are. r

At an early hour yesterday morning
Mrs. Rebecca Griffiths, wife of Kben
Her Griffiths, of South Main avenue,
died after an illness of about! six
months. The deceased was til y.ra of
age and a native of W iles. She has
bton a resident of this side for the past
thirty years. Mrs. Uritnths was a
woman of starling Integrity and earn
est Christian faith. Her husbtii 1 an 1
three daughters survive her. They are

The funeral of James Mawson, of
North Main avenue, was attended yes
terday afternoon from his late resi
dence. Rev. Samuel Marqnia. of St.
Luke's Episcopal church, officiated.

CRASHED INTO A HOUSE.

company, Conductor Drum and Motor

snowed iu at Taylor for tbe past two
days.
Yesterday afternoon the snow plough
was sent to Taylor, and last evening
the tracks were cleared s th it the ca r
could bo brought to the city, la com
ing down tbe Jacksan street grade the
snow plough jumped the track at the
curve just above the" Robinson street
iwitoh and crashed into tbe side of a
building. Th building was damaged
slightly but the snow plough was not
injured in the least.

noon with the fine array of elegant
turnouts that were drawn by livers up
and down the thoroughfare. Nearly
every style of sleigh was represented
on the avenue, from the elegant Rus
sian drags to the bobsled, and tha hue
sleighing was Iwartily enjoyed by all.
The nation of the avenue between
North Park and Gree.i Ridge street
was particularly lively as tbe speeding
ground for the blooded stock owned by
prominent SorantonUna. During the
afternoon numerous scrub races to k
place, which were watched wit.i inter
est bv hundreds of appreciative spec
tators who sat iu sleighs along the
course of two blocks or stood upon the
pavement

THE REVENUE OFFICE TRANSFER.
Collector Penman Will Be Succeeded by
Senator Herrlna on Saturday.
Internal Rsvanue Collector T. Frank
Penman will vacate the main office of
the Twelfth district in this city on
Saturday next and the newly appointed
collector, Senator Grant Barring, will
assume control. The transfer will be
made under tho supervision of Revenue
Agent Wolcott Lay.
The transfer of the offi ; is attended
with considerable ceremony and labor.
All stamps are counted and every dep
uty throughout tbe district is obligdd
to appear with stampi and otbor gov
ernment property in his possession,
which must be inspected by the agent.
WONDERLAND'S EXCELLENT SCENERY

There is one thing about the show at
Wonderland this week that is noticed
by everybody. It is the splendid
Bcenery, au excellent interior scene of
a circus tent. It is the work of Harry
Thorne, the accomplished stage man
agerof the Wonderland theater.
The show itself is one of the best
seen hero in soma time, and the acts
introduced by Ringmaster Brooks am
ull uovsl as wall as good. The strong
feats of tbe Grothe brothers are espec
ially noteworthy.

tions that have been devised and are in
comteiuplntion. Every man connected
with the establishment seems to bs a
genius in his line, and all are striving to
turn their inventive faculties into
some channel that will result iu a har
vest of golden shekels.
Prominent among men of au invent
Ive turn is one who is familiarly called
"Old John,'' but whose full name is
John Rolltn. lie is employed as a la
borer, but the best years of his life
have been devoted to inventing and lie

W. Parmaiea. Mr. Rollin has in con
templation a device for reducing the

Work Progressing at Dam.
Notwithstanding tho prevalent severe
weatner work at the new receiving
dam of the Meadow Brook Water com
pany that will be built ut Degau's
lariu is progrossiug rapidly. Iwo largo
gangs are employed, one on either side
of the road. Tha men are iu charge of
E A. Simonsou and James Couuell and
the work consists of removing stump
and dsbris preparatory to cleaning the
bed of the dam. This latter work is
expected to be eompleted next season
and the work of constructing the dam
and spillway will be proceeded with as
soon as the weather is propitious.
Odd Fellow Have a Rally.
The James Connell lodge, Independ
ent Order of Odd Fellows held a rally at
their rooms on Cedar avenue last even
ing. The hall was packed aud an in
teresting programme was rendered.
Instrumental music was furnished by
Bergbausers orchestra and by D injoist
George E Carr. Au address was de
livered by Joshua R. Thomas. It was
listened to with much attention and
many of the iuvitod guests seemed to
take his teachings to heart. As a re
sult, an increased momberihip is ex
pected at the next meetiug.
Short Now Nates.
There is still work for the Associated
Charities in this portion of the city as
the following incident will show. A
lady yesterday approached a South
Side merchant and asked him for some
provisions on her little home, off -ring
a note in security. Sh e has lived here
thirty years. Her huibaud is nnable

The North works will resumo opera
tions this morning after a ten "days'

The Harmony Building and Loan as
sociation met last evening. It has been
in existence for sevon years uud ten

Peter Snider, of S'one avenue, is
awaiting a summons to Kingston where

construction of a large bridgo across
the Susquehanna.
Jolio Kennedy has been made fore
man at tbe Scranton Axle works. He
is in charg of the laboring department.

The Pine Brook branch of tha St.
Vincent de Paul society gave a oleasaut
entertainment and social in Excelsior
hall on Wyoming avenue last evening
Th large attendance taxed tho hall to
its utmost capacity. Chairs were at a
premium and over a hundred person
were compelled to stand.
The entertainment was first class in
every respect and thoroughly pl4sd
the audience. The singing of .Mi-
Maggie Harrington, Mis Donghbrty,
Aliss Mcliale and liltlo Miss Gsral line
Blewitt was appreciated and roundly
applauded. The humorous impersona
tion and recitations by D Edward
Vail were exoellent and Mis Jemima
Jones, the elocutionist, was forced to
reipond to an encore when she recited
"Scotland's Maiden Martyr." The
playing of the Morse Mandolin aud
Guitar club was very good.
