HORRORS OF ANDERSOIVVILLt THE EFFECTS OF REBEL ATROCITY The Pennsylvanians who Suffered and Died There. A . COMPLETE LET OR OUR NOBLE MARTYRS. [Special Correspondence of The Prees.j I.lAmason - 80, July 8, 1865. Ryer since the fact became established that our soldiers; inmates of rebel prisons, were brutally treated by the rebel anthorities, and were dying by Thousands, Governor Cur tin has ben mimed in an effort to procure Setae data from which he could ascertain the names of those who perished 7 -the locality of their interment—}cult the ultimate object of having such remains removed, at the instance of the friends of the deceased, for reinter xnent in the localities of their own homes in Pennsylvania. Of course, while the rebellion - was in existence, the efforts of Governor. Cur tin Were not successful to a degree from which any immediate benefit could be derived. Nevertheless, be has steadily pursued his (mica, until he has met at least with partial snecess ; and now through the courtesy of Colonel Joseph A:Phillips, Surgeon General of Pennsylvania, I am enabled to lay before the readers or The Press a full and complete list Of Pennsylvania soldiers who died in the rebel prisons at Andersonville, Georgia, from February ^6,1864, to March 24, 1865, with this eom pony and regiment respectively to which each belonged, and the number of the grave occu pied by each, annexed. - .A copy of the original list of their names - was furnished to Governor Curtin by Thomas C. Tripler, lieutenant and adjutant 39th In fantry Missouri Vol un.eors and adjutant of Paroled Men at Benton Barracks, St. Louis. The list came into Adjutant Triplcr's nOSses sion through Charles Lang, hospital steward of the 101st Regiment Pennsylvania Volun teers, who was captured at Plymouth, North Carolina. This patient and considerate sol dier preserved a record of the names of such of .his comrades as perished while he was at Andersonville, and copied from the records of the prison itself such other names as he could gather, and now we have the result of his forethought and labor in the list below. Be Surely deserves, as he will receive, the grateful thanks of those in Pennsylvania whose sons and husbands- and fathers and brothers perished at Audersonville. It is the purpose of Surgeon General Phil lips to publish this list in pamphlet form. Before this could be accomplished, he has kindly acceddd .to my suggestion, and fur nished me with the copy for The Press, as the best means of getting it immediately and directly, through its immense circulation, to the masses of the people. The removal of the bodies cannot be effected before the first of October, according to orders issued from the War_Department; regulating the disinterment of the bodies of soldiers. In the meantime, Colonel Gregg, chief of trans portation on . Governor Curtin's staff, will in stitute an inquiry as to the best and most con venient way of securing such removals; and prior to the first of oetober he will issue a circular setting forth these facts, for the bent at of the public. I throw out these hints, to prevent any unnecessary haste in applying, for transportation tO eenvey their bodies from Georgia to Pennsylvania. At the proper time this transportation will be issued to the pro per persons, when it is hoped the honored remains of every gallant Pennsylvanian who perished at Andersonville will be removed to the soil of their native State, to repose amid the acmes of their youth, where Their graves 'will be watered with the tears of grateful generations yet to come. Governor Curtin and Surgeon General Phil- lips are engaged in efforts to procure similar lists of Pennsylvania soldiers buried at other rebel prisons. It is hoped soon to have a list ;- ready for publication, which 1 shall endeavor to procure for you, of those who perished at Salisbury, N. C. 'The following is the correct list, with name -of ecaupany, regithent, time of death, and num ber of grave, alphabetically arranged: _AlwOod.
