SALEM LEG COMPANY, BALEM, MASS., Soldiers’ Families, To the Editor of The Press : Change of Front. To Ihe Editor of The Freest Sib : It la a remarkable evidence of the strength and virulence of British prejudice against our oouu try that so i&any even of the leading religious periodi cals are accustomed to the use of language as severe and bitter as can be found In any secular print. Among these the Christian Observer takes thelead In abuse and misrepresentation; and so offensive has It long since become In .these respects, that many of Its oldest patrons In this country have refused to take It. It was not so a very few pears ago. As late as April, 1857, in a notice of the late Professor Henry Heed’s two lectures on the “ History of the Ameri can Union,” after alluding to a previous work hy tho same author on “ English literature,” the re-' viewer Bays: “The little book before us respeots his own country, and is designed to show that, while ‘for tho Constitution of the United States America owes a debt of deep gratitude to the sages and states men who constructed It,’ and whilst they have to (hank for their independence 1 the good men who proclaimed it,’ their thanksgiving for the ‘ Union Itself is .to be rendered to Almighty God.”’ “I speak It,” says the author, “with reverence and humility, and with thoughtfulness in the words which I use, when I say that this Union of ourß is the work of God.” If the “ Union is indeed from God, ’’ says the reviewer,‘’Shall it rhe cemented tpith human, suffering and blood 1 Shall hands In chains he em ployed to secure the citadel and sanctuary whloh God has built 1” The work “treats?’ continues the reviewer, “with considerable power and clear nesf of the tendency of the Saxon mind to general union associated with specific independence— a com mon head wlth iarge liberty for all the members.” •This temper of mind brought the State* into - “ union,” and Is the best security for its endurance. -But; when some of the “members,” only throe years after this paragraph was printed, attempted to decapitate the body, and thus paralyze and de stroy it- and, of course, all the other members with It—this same Christian Observer folds its arms with an expression of unmlhglod contempt, and rather exulted in the prospect of a general destruction of head, body, and members, I The reviewer adds: “ The rulers of England may learn at best one lesson from the history of Ameri ca, vie: That a mother country should affection ately nurse her colonies as long-as t hey need it, and be prompt to let them loose when they are fit to be out of the nurse’s urns.” May they not learn a further lesson, via •' That If thenursUhgs are abused : they will be very likely to fight their way out of the nursery, and perhaps get the better of the old lady herself; and when they are fairly out and have gone Into business for themselves, the less they see and hear of the nurse the better 1 l am, sir, yours truly, . LAXiHg, IIST3O*. I*. fijf Iron Letter.—We ana the annexed tribute jo.the skill or Pennsylvania meohanlos In the Bir mingham Fast: By the last American mall we re ceived a letter Which Is remarkable both as a doou inentary eurloslty and a specimen ofaaunfaeturing aklll. It Is written on iron rolled so thin that the sheet Is only twice the welght of a similar sized sheet of ordinary note paper. One letter is eight Inches long by fiye-and {quarter broad, and itswelghtis two pennyweights and twenty-ono grains. The' weight of a sheetof ordinary note-paper of the same size is one. pennyweight and eleven groins. The letter Itself explains why we received It. It 'la dated “ South Pittsburg (Pennsylvania), November iitb, 1864,” and It runs: “.To the Editor Of the Bir mingham Journal: Sir: In the n amber ofyoar paper, dated Oct. lst, 1804 ( there is an article setting forth that John Brown Sr 00., of the Atlas 'Works, Shef field, bad succeeded In rollings plate of Iron thirteen and a half Inches, thick. I believe that to be. the. thlokest ever rolled. I send you this specimen of Iron made' at thd Sligo Iron Works, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, as the thinnest Iron ever rolled In the world up.to this time, which Iron I challenge all England to surpass for strength and tenuity. This, I believe, Will be the first Iron letter that' evor crossed the’ Atlantic Ocean, and If yon Should think It.worthy, of notice,ln yourwldely-clionlated paper, please'send Me a copy of the same. Tours, &0., John C. 1 Evjlns. l * :wo are assured by competent authority the iron npon which thls letter Is written ■ieof exceedingly fine quality, and that the sheet Is by far the thinnest ever seen in this country. Some remarkable specimens of finely-rolled' Irdn were shown in thes Belgian Oonrt in the Exhibition of 1862; but the .thinnest., of them was ranch thicker 'than this. The production of such a sheet Indeed is :hlghly creditable to the Manufacturing skill of Pitts burg, the Birmingham of America. Government, bonds continued depressed yesterday, and the sales effected were at a farther decline on the prices of Thursday. The 6-20 a sold at 106& hr the after noon—a decline of 1%, and the 10-40 s at 100%—a decline of*. The 1881 loan was firm at 100%. The recent re action in the-price of the gold-bearing'Gjiyarnment bonds Is owing to thy fact that no announcement has yet been made that : a limit will be pnt to their Isshe. In the hellet- that the Secretary of-the. Treaaum vronld authorize the burning of only one hnndred iniiHons of -the 10- 40 bonds; and when that subscription was se cured, -would then state that nomore gold-bearing bonds.wonld be issued, a speculative demand apron, up for this description of securities, a day or two ago, and the $100,000,C00 were readily absorbed. ; A despatch In the papers of yesterday, however, stated that It-was understood in Washington, among prominentflnanoiers, that Secretary Fessenden will issue more 30-40 bonds. Another private despatch, received here, says it Is the Eecretary’s’ Intention to issue the whole $200,000,000 authorized under the act of Marth 3,- 3861. We are not prepared to say how far these advices are reliable, bnt the fact of Mr. Fessenden having given no expression of an intention to limit the issue, now that the first SIOO,COO,COO have been taken, at least gives countenance to these statements.
