A communication lately appeared in these co lumns which reflected Injuriously upon the ad ministration of affairs at Girard College. We gave our approval to the most important statements of otir correspondent, denouncing the Incapable and itinerant oontroi which the College has endured for years past from the majority of Its present Board of llireotors.: Ebr the rest, we are glad to believe that the reports relative to “ disloyalty within the walls,” the reading of the New York Daily News, fee,, and to the condition of the hoys as uncleanly and ragged, are, In the first oase, quite as untrue as they are trivial, and, In the second, greatly exaggerated, If hot altogether false. We also hope that, under the presidency of an experienced pro fessor and a, gallant soldier, Major Richard Somers Smith, the effect of the evils which the College has sustained from an Inefficient Board and an over crowded and uncomfortable system will disappear as soon as possible. The following letter, whioh comes to us from an unquestionable authority, will speak for Itself: To the Editor of the Press: Sis : I noticed a communication In your paper, a few days since, making certain charges against the management of Girard College. It asserced that the national flag had not for some time been raised on the flag-staff; that It had been rudely pulled from off the window of a lady toaoher who had placed It there, and that secession doctrines were taught to the olasaes by one of the professors or teachers. 1 have taken some pains to ascertain tho truth of, these reports, and aro convinced Ihere Is no founda tion for them. If, instead of obscure Intimations, the persons writing such communications would furnish the time and place of the transactions, and the names of those engaged, a willingness would be ex liibited at onoe on the part of those concerned in the College to have any proper charges Investigated. I may add that whilst the Age is to be found on tho tables of the College, the Inquirer, Norik Ame rican, and Philadelphia dally Press are also taken and plaoed there. C. Pnblic Entertalmncnts. Walnut-Street Tbe&tke.—Charlotte Thomp son, who is deservedly a favorite'hers, la in the last weok of her engagement. In most of her pieces she Is a very fair actress, hut If she hopes to rotain favor, must present new plays. The public tires, of repetition. Theatrical stars, with all their troubles', hive time to get up something hew occa sionally. If, like Miss Thompson, they possess a fair degree of talent, It Is eminently desirable that they should thus consolidate their reputation. Aboh-stbbet Theatre,—Yestvall is carrying all before her ds Bel Demonio . We have heretofore spoken of this play at length. It is well produced, and the management has nothing to complain of In the way of patronage. Assembly Buildings.—ln addition to the great exhibition known as the Stereoptleon, Bliss Pauline Cushman will appear every evening this week and give her experience s a spy in the rebel camp. A portion of her remarks on Saturday evening were deoidedly interesting to Philadelphians. Miss Cushman delivers two short addresses; in the Closing one, she appears in the uniform of a major. CITY ITEMS. “A Few More Plain 'Facts.”—More of the Florence Machines are not In use than all other sewing machines combined; 60,000 are not sold In a year; 6,000 are not In use in Philadelphia. But; there are enough in use to establish its superiority over all other family machines, and gain for it a host of friends who regard it as the Queen of Sew ing Machines, No other machine covers so large a range of work as the Florence. The sales of the Florenoe during the first year have been more than double that of any other, sewing machine for a like period, showing that a discriminating public can and do appreciate the advantages of the Floronoe over all others. Full instruction given without ■charge, whether you wish to purchase or not. Every machine warranted to give entire satisfac tion, or the money returned. Obliging lady opera tors, with or without machines, sent to any part of the city, by the day or week. Call or send your •orders to the Florence’ Sewing Machine Company, 630 Chestnut street. - The Great Toilet Article of the Age.— Lubin's Fioriline, which is how sold everywhere, deserves a place In every lady’s toilet. As a beau tifier, restorer, invigorator,,and Inimitable dressing for the Hair, it Is certainly the most magnificent article ever invented. Ladies who try a single carton, which costs but little, are not willing to forego its use on any account. The Present Advance in Gold will Inevita bly tend to send up the price of ooal, and we ,would therefore advise our readers who have not yet done so to send their orders to Mr. W. W, Alter, 957 North Ninth street, without delay, while thsy ean get the best Ooal at the low prices. The Stock of Gentlemen’s Furnishing Goods offered by Mr. Geo. Grant, No. 810 Chestnut street, Is the finest In the olty, and his celebrated “ Prize Medal Shirts,” invented by Mr. J. F. Taggart, are unsurpassed by any others in the world In fit, oom fort, and durability. Faster and More Furious.—The election ex citement grows more and more furious. Mass meetings, precinct meetings, all sorts of meetings, keep the politicians as busy as so many bees In a tar barrel. This hind of work will continue until the ides of November, when a calm may be looked for. In the meantime, we recommend the men of all parties to keep cool, and to procure their wear ing apparel at the Brown-Stone Clothing Hall of Bookhill & Wilson, Nos. 603 and 605 Chestnut street, above Sixth. lEhb Heady Maid.
