It* The Adulteration of Spirituous Li quors.—What with the increased duties on imported spirits and the heavy taxes on fourth-proof domestic li quors, an immense quantity of alcoholic preparations nre thrown upon the market as representatives of the regular spirits used as Leverages, snob as whisky,, brandy, gin, and nun* tbA former now kolng about as difficult to obtain pure and unadulterated as it used to bo common and of good quality. The result of the scarcity of good spirituous liqnors has been to introduce Into tho market a species of beverage composed of pure spirits combined with some tonic vegetable extract, the compound being known as Bitters. These “Bitters”, are, generally speaking,as far superior to the spirituous liquors ordinarily retailed at bars aud taverns as possible and much less injurious than even the best spirits, are, for their tonic effects counterbalance the inflammatory action that accompanlesall alcoholic drinks. But even in the manufacture of this class of popular beverages, there is more or less adulteration, and therefore care is required in makinga selection, in order that tho best quality may be procured. The best in tho market that we have yet seen is that known as tho * * Golden Bitters, 3 ’ which is warranted of the best materials, and composed of extracts from purely vegetable sources. A medical.Analysis.which Mr. HUBBEL had f mada for the purpose, shows that his Bitters are ominoutly calculated to relieve the dyspeptic, and afford that gentle stimulant necessary to assist tho weak and infirm to bear with the fatigues of dally life. The time will come when these Bitters will supersede UVepoisonons drinks now imbibed at our public bars, and when this change takes place wo shall hear ,of fewer cases of mad drunk enness and less deaths from delirium tremens, —Brook*- 9 iyn Post. r _ _ my3Q-Ct To Clear the House or Flies, use Butcher's celebrated ■ . Wo know his medicines have done wonders here, and apparently wherever they go they have the same effect: PHYSICIANS, . CONSUMPTION CAN BE . CURED. Dr. SCHENCK would invite tho Faculty, or any one who feels an interest in this matter, to visit Ills Rooms, No. 33 BOND Street, on TUESDAY next, the 7th inst., at 11 o’clock. ; He hae iuade arrangements to have seve ral persons there that have been cured, so that they can* see for themselves what Ms medicines are doing, and STRUP, SEAWEED TONIC, and MANDRAKE PILLS are iutenued to assist Nature. ■ Whenapersou has anything like a Inng-dlsease they expect too much from medicines, and lake too much. To stop a cough is to hasten on consumption, as the . cough is fth effort of Nature. Everything must be done, to strengthen, create an appetite, aud set the digestive organs in a healthy condition to digest rich food and make new blood to penetrate throughout the body and work out the diseased matter. ; l)r. SCHENCK’S medi cines can do all this if there aro lungs euough left to got up an action of the liver and stomach. Food does It all.- The Pulmonic Syrup turns to blood, the Seaweed t Tonic acts on the nmcua of the stomach, .and dissolves that slime which coats it over, and prevonis tho gastric juice from fiowiiig, which stops digestion. , - The Mandrake Pills are used to carry ifcjotr; they un lock the gall-bladder, stait the bile, and in a few weeks is nil the time, longing, for food. The mutter ripens in the lungs, nature throws it off, with littio effort, and ; the patient begins to get fleshy, and soon gets well. On Tuesday next Dr. Scheuck will have a young lady, from Stamford, Conn., nt his rooms, who was brought to him some months ago In the Inst stage of Consump tion She was very much emaciated, and throwing off large Quantities of blood. Dr, Scheuck examined her lungs vrilh his Resplrometer, and found one hiug nearly. sound, but tho other had a large cavity in the middle lobe, and tho nppor and lower lobe nearly gone; He gave her no encouragement, but she was determined Lo try the medicine, and to tho astonishment of all who latetv her, she has got well. She has galuod some 35 pounds in-ileslw and looks, as if shohad naver had a sick day; but when yam come to sound tho lungs any one can discover the great difference. Dr. Schenck wishes some physicians would call, and examine for themsolvcs. They will bo astonished to seo so healthy a young lady with only one lung. . . Also, Sirs. Bartholomew,.a ludy in this city, who had a <«ongested liver for many years, forming a running: tmnor outwardly over 14 years. She ia nuw perfectly cured by this medicine, auu it would bo a great satisfac tion to many to converse with her. ThfirewiU be seve ral others there who have been raised from the last stage of consumption, if the weather will permit. Dr. Schenck wishes to make the public acquainted with his process in curing consumption—that Ins medicines only assist nature—food is tho only dependence, and if this is once fairly understood, hundreds will commence using his medicines at aa curlier stage in their disease, and whenmnuy more might be cured. . •*"' , A few years ago Dr. Schenck himself was m, the last siago of consumption, and cured by these medicines. Many people in Philadelphia remember Mm then, and he was called u walking skeleton, weighing out* IQ7 pound?, and.six feet high. He now weighs *220 pouuds. Hehafi at this time » dond lung, which any physician can detect, yet still is a hale hearty mini, visiting pa tients ana examining luugß daily, aud travelling by night from one.city ; to another to fulfil his numerous engagements. . .-■■■H/;: )VEW I*I?BMCATIOyS % ._^ READY— THE GREAT AMERICAN PHILOSOPHER' AND DI PLOMATIST EVER PUBLISHED. The frequent publication of Dr. Franklin’s Autobio graphy has deterred any writer hitherto from attempt ing a complete and thorough biography of ibis truly great and distinguished man. No one over left to the world a record more rich in the requisite material for a mostentertaiuliigand Instructive history of bis life, aud the wonder is that so many years should have elapsed before its presentation to us in n connected and systema tic form. ’ . The story of Franklin’s career, rs itpresents itself to the investigations of another, has remained to this day untold; and one who would know H in all its fuliness of interest nn<T beauty—one who would see Franklin as others saw him, which is biography—must road ten vo lumes, and consult two h undred. In the composition of the present work, the autobiography has been regarded only in the light of “ material.” Autobiography Is one of the most interesting and valuable kinds of composi tion, but autobiography can never bo accepted in lieu of biography, because tono man is the giftie given of seeing himself as others seo him. Dr. Franklin, moreover, assures us that he wrote his autobiography for the in struction of yonth; he omitted “aii facts and transac tions that may not have a tendency to benefit the young reader.” The object of tliis. biography is simply to render a knowledge of the benign and noble life of Dr. Franklin more accessible to Ills countrymen.
