"How Long?" 'To the Editor of The Press : zSalt : Thinking your numerous readers might be anterested in knowing something of the home work lugs of rebellionoul, take the liberty of sending you a. short extraetfrem a letter, by a young lady of - Virginia to her aunt In this city, both of whom are very near relatives of mine. , It may not be amiss to •say that, at the time this rebellion broke out, the Sather of this young lady was the owner of an ex cellent farm, together with all the hands and stock ameessary to carry it on successfu ity and a profitably, 'nd n&tloubt was worth at least twenty thousand +dollars. A sad contrast with his present condition, lf the statement of his daughter be true! Of its •entire .truthfulness 1 do not entertain a doubt. "How long, 0 Lord ! how long" are this people to lie deluded and led on to destruction by their info -I:nous and wicked rulers ? But to the extract. 'Her letter is flitted May 16, 1864 " We are sorely dependent; haven't an ounce of anent, dust of flour or meal, grain of wheat; sugar, coffee or tea, nor two barrels of corn. The guards tire very,Aclnd to us, they assist us as much us they can. General told papa this morning:Vint he tvould send us some provisions. We have not any lvay to send for anything, but he said he would send it to us. Very few officers have been here those Who hove are very kind and polite. _Mother and papa's health is very bad ; they are very thin; papa- Seldom goes. off of the farm ; everything is very :high. At last accounts flour was $325 per barrel, meal tk4sl) per bushel, sugar $lO per pound, calico $l3 to $l5 Ter yard, shoes $1.5 to $lOO per pair, bacon, middling, 4;13 per pound, hams not so high. You can imagine at ' , What expense a family lives. 1 expect,-if the army leaves, we will have to starve. " Yours, affectionately. PUTLADELPHIA, May 23, 1804. - The Worms on the Trees To the Editor of The Press: SIR : -There-has been a great deal said and writ ten about the worm nuisance, and yet no practical alcans have been discovered to destroy these crea tures. I have been thinking of a plan for setae limo. which, I think, if !riven a full trial, would re :Mit in thinning them out to a great extent, if not in destroying, them entirely. We all know that the Common moth is strongly attracted by a bright 31ght, and will fly heedlessly Into a Mime, and as the worms that infest our trees turn into millers, and then deposit their eggs' why not try the export anent upon them 7 I would suggest that, after the tniller makes its appearance, large fires be built in our squares, and other convenient places, to see %that effect it would have tipon them. Destroy the Sulller this season, and we will have no worms next reason. I am, sir, yours respectfully, t Orrizna. L 00.6 SQuicna Philadm, May 25,1864. Worms, Birds, 1 Squirrels To the Editor of The Press: Sin: The worms are making their appearance, and probably will be quite as bad as ever. Various reasons are given for their production, and antidotes proposed for their removal. It is asserted, and perhaps with a large portion of truth, that the birds have been da‘ven away from the trees by the squirrels in the public squares. - If that be the case let us have the, squirrels removed: placed the first squirrel in Franklin Square, and mill willingly see them all removed, if it will effect the purpose. Very truly yours, Sm., Ill:Nay. Paitankr.PHlA, „May 2a 1884. PItECIOI7S . 11.011SIXL,ESH.=',..0 three-year-Old " Lexington ".colt, "Norfolk," that won the colt take at the Laclede Course, on Monday, was sold. yesterday by his owner, R. , Ritcheson Alexan • der, of Woodtbrd county, liy., to a company-of Cal- Iforitia gentlemen, for $15,001. This is, we believe, one dollar more than was ever before paid for a horse in the United States. The first of the series of grand matches for the benefit of the Philadelphia Sanitary Fair was com =enced in this city on Wednesday afternoon, the contestants on the occasion being selected nines of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The most nume- TOW assemblage of spectators ever seen on the ,grounds were gratified witnesses of the skillful play shown by both parties, and throughout the game .hearty outbursts of applause were elicited time and again. Indeed, there never was an amalgamated game played in the State in which.. better play was shown. On the part of New Jersey, Fisher's admirable play as catcher, Henry's effective :pitching, the fine base play of Tyrrel, were notice able features; and on the Pennsylvania side INIe- Pride's pitching, Frazer's fly-catching, and Bis .plane's base playing were praiseworthy. In catch ang, Tyrrel took the lend, thereby winning the tro phy of the game for the Newark. Olub, Northrop making the next best score ; and oo the other side Bomeisler took the lead in scoring, Bisplane being .Second. The decisions of Mr. P. The Committee never have pressed their claims. -Nei -there have they lost sight of the fact that there were other institutions equally worthy of public confidence and suPport; and they have endeavored to discharge the duties entrusted to them an an honest, economical, quiet, and unostentatious Palmer. Up to this time we have been generously supported by contributions from our friends and a portion of the moneyed corporations of Philadelphia,. We have tried to lessen the burdens of our kind friends by annual fairs in June; the first was a success; the second comparatively a failure, in conse quence of the raid into Pennsylvania last summer, and there is -no prospect of holding one this season, as in tendey. The high price of provisions and the heavy and constant demand on our Saloons, have nearly de pleted our treasury, and as the signs of the times point to a series of protracted battles, and as there will no doubt be still further calls on our limited resources, we are compelled to make this appeal to the liberality of the citizens of Philadelphia and vicinity. for assistance, otherwise our future usefulness will' be very much im paired.
