It i/beautiful to reflect upon a life of goodness, well and usefully spent, where the leadiug aspiration has been a service In behalf of humanity, with the love of truth and virtue dominant, and where duty has bean al ways desirable, and desire forever dutiful- In each cases parity Is the groundwork of every important mo tive. The character beams tWith uprightness, and the whole career shows what a recompense there is in faith fnlntts. Such a life meets with love and good-will at every turn. The affectionate regard that abides, whether in the hearts of the lowly or the high- is more than the carved words of enduring marble,{and the poor tribute of a written encominm has no worth compared with, the hallowed recollection that remain. There are <ew deaths that are more deeply and sincere ly lamented than that of our beloved friend* Doctor TIELCS. Measured by years his life has been short.but long when tried by action. It was more than replete; and it might almost be said that ho became a victim to his own determined exertions. He pursued his labors loot after tbs flesh was too weak to justify their prosecu tion, end not till ho was overcome by physical exhaus tion were they relinquished. He thug became, as it w*re a martyr to the humane pursuit which had been ill* life’s oevotion. , , Be began the practice of medicine just ten years ago, caving i« cated himself at Bristol in the early part of the year 18C4. In the coming campaigns of our armies the labor, of tha “Sanitary Commission” will bo ffreatly augmented. By the first of June 700.000 men—one of the largest armies of modern times—will be operating in the field. Ere Bay Leol, his rival brave. Should call sweet ToU bride f ANOTHER NEW STORY HOW BEADY IH THE NEW YORK WEEKLY, THB BEST ETORY AND SKETCH PAPER PUBLISHED. THE NEW YORK WEEKLY has succeeded, at great expense, in securing the services of one of the greatest of living romance writers, who, for reasons of his own, chooses to write for them 'not under his proper name, but under the nom de plume of LOUIS LEON. The same of this gentleman 1b world wide, and it 1* safe to ray that there Is hardly a reader of romance on this continent who has not, at one time or another, been charmed by his genius. As a writer of romance, it is not too mnch to say that he stands without a superior on either side of the Atlantic. Louis Leon’s first contribution to the columns of the NEW YORK WEEKLY is indisputably the finest of all his productions, He htmself, in a letter to ns, says : ‘ • it ia infinitely superior to anything which I have ever written.” This splendid romance Is entitled THE SILVER SHIP; THE BLOODHOUND OF THE CARIBBEAN. A 6PANISH-AMEBIOAN HTOftT. , BY LOUIS LEOH. The tale is historical, and the main incidents are true. The principal characters are Gallocarris, the famous pirate, commonly called by the Spanlsh-Amerleans of his times, before the proper name was known, El Ba • bvsso del Mar Caribe, or the B> oodhound of the Carib bean, a title that arose from his terribly mysterious way of learning about the movements of treasure-ships, and tracking them, a secret which is clearly explained, for the first time, in these page*. Buy Leol. the hammock maker of lola Grande, who also lives and moves in a singular mystery. Count Regia, of Mexico, the proprie tor of the great silver mine of Regie. Padre Lasso, the priest of lola Grande. Captain Romero, the commander of the galleon Knoantadora, the Silver Ship. Sanor Nerle, a person of wealth and luxurious tastes. Who lives retired at a beautiful villa on Isla Grande, and to whom an extraordinary mystery attaches. Yola, a young girl of marvellous grace* and loveliness, under charge of Padre Lasso and reputed among the inhabi tants of lola Grande to be his niece—a glorious type of the Spanish-American woman, a bring of sunshine and flowers* over whose life, at the moment of her introduc tion, rests a painful mystery, in which is threatened an appalling doom. lolet Leol, the foster sister of Don Buy. Tie Countess of Begla. Yola is a glorious crea tion. a fresh ingenious young creature, in whom the lady readers will be especially interested. We confidently look for an Immense increase in circu lation on this atory, and nows dealers woolu do well to send in their orders in time. Besides the above great story, this favorite family journal will contain two other continued Btories of great merit, as well as from EIGHT to TWELVE first-class SKETCHES, of different varieties; a large number of POEMS, and a variety of departments of a useful and en tertaining character, including Pleasant Paragraphs,* “Mirthful Morsels,” “Knowledge-Box,” “Items of In terest,” Ac., Ac , the whole going to form a family news paper which, as Is freely admitted by all who take it, has not its equal in this country or the old. WE HAVE LEARNED NOT TO BE astonished at anything. Tears of experience, and a correspondence extending throughout all nationalities of the habitable globe, have turned theories into facts and established a basis from which we'need not err. We are not surprised at ench facts as the following, although the persons who write them are. We know the persons and circumstances, hence feel at liberty to endorse their statements: ** New Bedford, Ham., Not. 21.1883. "Bear Bib; I have been afflioted many years, with severe prostrating cramps in my limbs, cold feet and bands, and a general disordered system Physiolans and medicines foiled to relieve me. While visiting some friends in New Tork, who were using Plantation Bitters, they prevailed upon me to try them. I commenced with a small wine-glassfal after dinner. Peeling better by de grees. in a few days I was astonished to find the coldness and cramps had entirely left me, and I could sleep the night through, which I had not done for years I feel like another being. My apetite and strength have also greatly improved by the use of the Plantation Bitters. ** Respectfully. JUDITH RUSSEL." I Bebdsbtxrt, W!e„ Sept. The following is from the Manager of the Union Home School for the Children of Volunteers: “ Bavbmbtbr Mansion, Fifty-bbvbwtk St.. One little girl. In particular, with pains in her head, loss of appetite, and daily wasting consumption, on whom all medical skill had been exhausted; has been entirely restored. We commenced with but a teaspoon ful of Bitters a day. Bar appetite and etreneth rapidly increased, and she is now well. Respectfully, Mss. 0. M.
