'Selling the government Gold.—Congress fleems disposed to authorize Mr. Chase to sell the surplus gold on hand in the Treasury Department. "We are content, any how, and we have no particu lar desire to see the auriferous in general circulation (exoept as a patriotic measure) when we can pur chase for greenback* such elegant wearing apparel at the Brown-Stone clothing Hall of Eoskhill & TPilson, Nos. 603 and 605 Chestnut street, above Sixth. Pi tin stokt is told or a gentleman who, while Btanding on the Wire Bridge, unfortunately dropped a valuable ring into the river Schuylkill. He deeply regretted his loss, but of course had no hope of again aeeing it. A few days after, however, his servant bought a fish in the market, and upon opening it found the lost ring, wrapped up in a piece of The Press, containing the inevitable advertisement of Granville Stokes, the celebrated Tailor, No. 609 -Chestnut street. -Colonel Stbbight a Little Crooked. —'■ The -Colonel, at a dinner the other day, said the ladles ■hould help the Union cause (just as ir that was not what they were always trying at, by discounte nancing the young men who walk the streets with large salaries and good clothes.” We only want to correct the Colonel in this particular. Good clothes are not a sign of large salaries; a majority of men buy their clothing at Charles Stokes & Co.’s, uuder -ihe Continental, and that can be done creditably on small salaries. The “GETTYSBURG BATTLE FIELD MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION ” was instituted for the purpose of se eming forever tho principal points upon the great battle-field of the war. In the exact condition in which' they were left In July, 1963. when the rebel hordes of the invader Lee were driven back from the free sell of Pennsylvania, and when the the gallant soldiers of General Heaps remained in possession of the field which they .hsd won by their valor. The Association have already secured the purchase of Cemetery Hill, Culp’s Fill. Granite Spue, and Bound Top, with the entrenchments thrown up just upon the eve of the great conflict Which was the turning point in the career of the rebellion. The field, with its redoubts, wonderful stone defences, its timber breast-works, its forest heights, with the trees torn by shells and countless bullets, and Its long lines of earthwork defences, have all been pre served intact, and toco continue to preserve them, as to be ft monument forever of the greatest of American battle-fields, is the object of the formation of the Asso ciation. To enable a large number of persons to join in this patriotic work, the projects of the plan placed the subscriptions at ten dollars each. The payment of this Sum MARES EACH SUBSCRIBER A MEMBER OF THE ASSO CIATION, AND PART OWNER OF THE GLORIOUS FIELD OF fIKTTTSBURa. What Loyal and Patriotic Citizen of Pennsylvania would not gladly embrace the privilege of recording his name upon this roll of honor, and of linking himself di rectly with the field where the lo;ty heroism of hts countrymen vindicated the integrity of the Union and the principles of Freedom ? And who would not desire to hand down as a precious heir-loom to hie children the evidence of Ms part in the good Work, bearing, as the certificate will, a view of the field which will rank in history with Thermopylae, Marathon, and Waterloo? There are no salaried officers in this Association, nor are there any object b In view in its creation other than these already stated. The grounds were purchased from their orlgii al owners at the exact price to be paid for them by the Association, and the points selected, and the prices to be paid for them, met the unQualifled ap proval of a committee of the Historical Sooiett of Pennsylvania, appointed for the purpose of visiting the field. The following are the nameß of the general officers of the Associationi and of the Local Commi.tee in Phila delphia: Hon. JOSEPH B. INGEB&OLL, Chairman Provisional Committee. Rev Dr 8 S.
