LITJSKAKY NOTES. Amoit unique and magnificent volume hujust been pienared under the aupervulofc of Mr. T. W. Morrell, the book dealer, ol Fulton itreeVwMoti by rearon of its peculiar Intereet and fine workman, abipi deserves notice. It comprehends the entire oortespondenee of the Union Loyal League ia regard to the great matt-meeting of loyal men held at XJtica, on the 27th of May last, and ia intended as an appreciative gift from the members of toe League to their tieasuter, Leonard W. Jerome, Eaq. Mr Je. zone was instrumental in raising the sum of $20,000 for the defrayment of the expenses of the meetlQg, and in lecognitlon of this and other services the correspondence received from prominent statesmen, generals, and men of letters, pertinent to the ooca llon, was placed in the hands of Q-en. Prosper M» Wetmore, for suitable embalmment. The volume, as it DOW Appears, If a full imperial quarto, in Turkey morocco, containing about one hundred and fifty leaves. Each letter is inlaid in one of these heavy t creamy leaves, so that no little scrutiny is required to detect its insertion. Even to the touch this literal letting-in of the epistles is scarcely discern able. Pacing each letter is a steel engraving or pho tograph of its author, inlaid in a similar manner. Throughout thevolua*e fine water Cjlor pictures are scattered] together with local views historically or otherwise connected with the meeting. The final pages are devoted to finely-engrossed records of pro ceedings, resolutions, &e. As a specimen of special book-making it is peculiarly notable. At the same house (Murrell’s) is a volume of a different sort; but one redolent of interest to book hunters. ' This is a copy of Cadwallader Golden’s History of the Five Indian Nations, printed by Bradford, in the year 1727. In a recent and highly prized woik upon private libraries, it is stated, I believe, that only two copies of this edition are in ex istence, and that these are imperfect. Mr. Morrell’s copy is perfect, however; consequently, the learned gentleman referred to is in error. 1 GENERAL ITEMS. At the Duaseldorf Gallery a private collection of paintiugß baa been sold under the hammer, and the proceeds are announced to have reached the aam of forty thousand dollars. At the second evening l * sale the highest prices brought were $1775, at which sum a “View on the Magdalena, n by Church, was knocked down; and $1,950 for “Twilight, 1 * by the same artist. A large number of ministers of the Gospel have published a protest against the introduction of the raffling system Into the Metropolitan Fair, basing their objection! on tbe grounds of law and morality. Their recommendation meets with much opposition in certain quarters} the Herald leading in the van of the antagonistloal party, and soundly berating the ecclesiastics on the ground of unwarrantable inter* ferenee. How the conflict will terminate, remains as yet problematical. There seems some reason to suspect that the raffling will be triumphant notwith standing. The Italian opera progresses finelyrboth as re* gards the public and managerial interests. The rage, at present, is Gounod’s Faust, 11 and the critics are continually encoring it. Tne troupe is a good one, and its success well deserved. Brignoli, the old stand-by tenor t par excellence, is soon to re sume his old place upon the Academy stage. Man ager Wheatley, of Niblo’s, announces the speedy termination of the engagement of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams. Philadelphia is soon to have an opportunity of testing the merits of these artists, and of their last new drama, “The CounieSoogah.” STUYVESANT. Tbe Cold Weather. Notwithstanding the apparent prospe rity abroad there is an undercurrent of suffering which is our buti to search out ana relieve. Tne labor of work ing men is we-1 remunerated: but that of poor s »winiE W' lcen te not, except in special ca«es. We know of who, vrorsinglate and early, carubatf2 per week ; who xcakeconmion shirts for $1 26, and drawers for §1 per dozen. Men control their wages by banding together and demanding an increase of pay, but there seems to be no redress for women, who are wholly,in the power of their employers. When it is asserted, therefore, that la bor is abundant, &c. , we point to this class of sufferers, and ask for them and those dependent upon them the sympathies of the public. The public must be remind ed, however, that it 1a not for those who are able to labor that our clarity is intended, but for chose who are ioca peciiale* by reason of sickness or inflrmitus, and upon whom the high prices work an immense amount of suf fering. Tbit* class •* we have always with u*, no mat ter low mild the winter or favorable the times. They are mostly women, often with families of small chil dren. It costs them from $8 to $lO for a ton of coal, or rather sixteen to twenty dollars, for they are compelled to buy it by the basket, at double tbe comm m price. Uur Society has one hundred and forty female visitors who discover more of this kind of suffering than, they have joeiuit to relieve, andlt is for them tha-t this appeal is made. Onr whole receipts is'money per auburn is not over $10,C00.. {A siinilar socUty in Mw York receim $70,C00.) More ihan half of this is expended for coal, leaving less than $6 0001 be divided among one hundred and foity ladles, making the annual sum for aisinbu ticnby each tw-nty five dollars, or two dollars per month. With this these ladies relieved, last year, 4.( 60 frmiliep. They made 11,048 visits to the poor. They found employment for 959 parsons. They ministered to 791 sick. They sent to school 138 children They dis tributed 1.224 tons of coal, 1.477 garments, 800 stoves, and kept £0 women in sewing for their store* besides a distri bution of over $4.000 in money. This winter the demand is aieaier and the receipts smaller. TheSocietv, there fore. makes this appeal for farther aid, at the clo-e of the season, when suffering is always greatest. The collec tors of the eooiety, Messrs. Cooper and Brine, will make an early call upon the citizens, and they are earnestly commended to ilie attention of the charitable; or contri butions may be sent to the Treasurer, Bdmnnd Wilcox, Esq., 404 Chestnut i-treet, or to the Agent of the Society at t>-e Office, northwest corner of Seventh and Sansom streets.
