To the Editor of the Press: SIR: At the last meeting of the g 6 Board of Con trollers of the Public Schools " a resolution was in troduced by Mr. Adams, a member from the Fit; teentb Section, to the effect that "C feat Lessons" and "Mental Arithmetic " be introduced in the pri mary schools, in addition the lessons now taught. When we consider the amount of labor now par formed by littleohildren in the primary schools, it is amazing that an attempt should be made to increase their studies. The system of cramming children has been denounced time and again by the ablest physl (liana of the country. The reports of the Insane Asylum, particularly, condemn the practice, and trace mental imbecility, in many cases, to over exertion,or forcing young children. If Cobbett deserves to live in rho memory of future ages, it will be room for the important truths which he proclaimed in regard to the +education of children than for any of his other teachings. It was his maxim that the age of ten Was early enough to send a child to school, as up to - that time the whole care of the parents should be °voted to its physical development. The expert .. se of all who have been engaged in educational pursuits bears out this theory. We have, besides, the fate of Infant prodigies to sustaia it. They never come to anything in mature age, either men. tally or physically, and in the majority of instances pay for their precocity by premature decay. If the teachers of the Fifteenth section instruct -too little, such is not the cane in other sections. 'Teachers should look to the phi steal condition of children placed under their charge, and not merely consider how many they c-n promote at quarterly mtnalione, thus keeping the childttn in constant errous excitement. It is to be hoped that the new ruember, just elected for the Fifteenth section, Mc. Potter, an able gentleman, will repudiate the acts of his predecessor in the Board, and cooperate with the new members in introducing a uniformity of studies in the primary schools. Respectfully, L. E. Public entertainments.
