FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. TUE MONEY MARKET. PHILADEILPHIA. October 13,1883. Gold advanced very rapidly this morning. and there Was an intense excitement on the street concerning it. The eleotion is supposed to have something to do with. this continued advance. the Curtin men say that it rises` because many fear that the election of Mr. Wood- Ward will tend the country reeking to ruin, will e the Woodwardites retaliate by sayir.g "that if their man is elected, gold and silver will be as plenty as blackber ties, for the United States will immediately resume spe cie payments." It is certain that if these United States Go to ruin, gold at presentrfignres is a gond investment, and we advise all.who Imagine such a thing to "go in;" but if specie payments are rosnmed, it to a bad time to - .invest The fooling on the subject was vary high on the atreet, and we understand that Wall street is similarly affected; ito there may be something In the conclusions .above, drawn: The retrograde movement of General jiteade, node t tht, had a great deal to do with advancing gold to 3.36%, which, we believe, was the highest figure. It &need rather weak at 162:6". Money is in active demand, but the rates are un 'changed. Government securities are in strong demand. WHAT IT IS TO DE 'A PRINOE.—The Prince of Wales, in his present position, presents a strong contrast alongside of a Lancashire operative. The income of the Duchy of Cornwall commences with his birth, to be put to his credit. Over $1,000,000 of the accumulation was paid for his lately•purchased estate in Norfolk, the rents of which will be $35,000 a year. The balance at his bankers is $2,500,000, and his Duchy of Cornwall brings an income of $125,000 a year. Besides this, Parliament voted him $500,000 A year during his mother's life, and voted $250,000 a year pimmoney to his, bride, They will also have Marlborough House, close to St. James' Palace, as a rent-free residence, We ilaye princes thiß daft ! 1 country, but every man and boy daft dress like a prince," at a very small cost, by purchasing at Cattalo Stokes and Co.'s "one-pride" Clothing Store, under the Continental. , CHARGES OF FAsirioN.—We have before us a whimsical pioture of, a dandy of the year 1819. His wide pantaloons come down but-little_bblow the knee ; the waist of his swallow-tailed coat is almost on a level with his arm-pits ; his coat sleeves resemble, cloth sausages ; his hat is bell- Drowned, and his stock is huge. CoMpare such a ri diculous looking figure as this with a gentleman clad in an elegant suit of becoming and'comfortable ap parel, such as is made at the Brown Stone Clothing Hall of Rookhill and Wilson, Nos. 603 and 606 Chest nut street, above Sixth. WHAT THE ELECTION OF YESTERDAY HAS PROVEN.—The election passed off ; quietly, and soon it will be forgotten that such an important event ever took place. The vote polled . was a large one, and has proven conclusively two things: In the first place, it has proven that the people were deter mined on having Kr. Somebody for nest Governor, and in the second place that they have a decided preference for the beautiful styles of fall garments, as introduced by the celebrated Fashioner and Clothier, Granville Stokes, No. 609 Chestnut street. This latter fact is shown beyond doubt. STEELING EXCHANGE BOUGHT AND SOLD BY iSa CO., 34 South THIRD Street, 5-20. U. S. 5-20. The undersigned. as General Subscription Agent, is authorized by the Secretary of the Treasury to continue the sale . of this popular Loan, and TEN DAYS public notice will be given of discontinuance. - ABOUT TWO HUNDRED MILLIONS remain unsold, and this amount is scarcely sufficient _to furnish a basis for the circulation of the National Banking Associations now being formed in every part of the Country. Bat a short time must elapse before this loan is wholly ab sorbed, the demand from Europe, Germany esrecially, being quite active. As it is well known that the Secretary of the Trea sury has ample and unfailing resources in the duties on imports, internal revenues, and in the issue of interest bearing Legal Tender Treasury Notes, it is nearly cer tain that it will not be necessary for him for a long time to come to issue further permanent Loans, the interest and principal of which are payable in Gold. These considerations mast lead to the prompt conclu sion that the time is not far distant when these - ' Five- Twenties" will sell at a handsome premium, as was the result with the "Sevenkz . thirte Loan, when it was all sold, and could no longer be subscribed for at par. This is a SIX PER CENT. LOAN, the interest and principal being payable in coin. thus Yielding about EMIT per cent. per annum at the present Premium on gold.. It is called " Five -Twenty," from the fact that whilst the Bonds may run for twenty years. yet the Govern ment has the right to pay them off in gold at par, at any time after five years. The interest is paid half yearly on the first days of No vember and May. Subscribers can have Coupon Bonus which are paya ble to bearer and issued for $5O. $lOO, goo, and $l, OW. or Registered Bonds of similar denominations, and in: addition $5,000 and. $lO,OOO. These "Five-Twenties" cannot be taxed by States, cities, towns, or counties. and the Government tax on them is only one and a half per cent, on the amount of income, when the income exceeds six hundred dol lars per annum. Income from all other investments, such as mortgages, railroad stocks, bonds. &c., inns pay from three to five per cent. tax on the income. Banks and Bankers throughout the country will _con tinue to dispose of the Bonds, and all orders by mail or otherwise properly attended O.' The Treasury Department having perfected arrange ments fox the prompt delivery of. Bonds, §ubscribent will be enabled to receive them at the time of sat-scri bing, or at farthest in FOUR days. This s_:.riangement will be gratifying to parties who wart% the Bonds on pay ment of the money, and will grimily increase the sales.
