In truth) those who have not witnessed the turning of the “wheel” can scarcelyimagine that there should be so much good humor and kind feeling as there iB, where, it might naturally be expected, there would prevail turmoil, anger, and gloom. Each name, as it is announced, calls forth a rival laugh, and what might be misery becomes joy, for misery loves com pany, and rejoices. It is not true that there exists so great a prejudice against- the draft as to justify any apprehension of an opposition to it, even in word, much less in act. Nor iB it yet true that a majority of those drafted will pay the commutation. The draft is not so generally looked upon as odious, but as a light burden which ought, and will be borne cheerfully: for, thus far, the 11 wheel” has so rolled around, that all classes of our citizens have reason to command its impartiality. It has cast up rich and poor alike, and the cases are few where the drafted will leave us in gloomy dread of a loss thereby to his 1 family or kindred. No family will suffer pecuniary ly by this last draft. City Councils have already an ticipated any case of hardship, and have patriotically provided for it. One member of. Select Council, and two members of Common Council have been drafted. The president of our Board of School Controllers, one of the young iu the Central High School, and a large number of public schoolteachers have been drawn. The provost marshal of the Third district was drafted yesterday. The man who turns the wheel: was likewise called upon. In the Fifth district two - persons were drawn, both of whom experienced practically the workings of the last State draft. The first was drafted, but'obtained a substitute for $7OO. The .- substitute -entered the .army, and soon made his mark as a soldier and gentlemen. He was elected lieutenant, then captain, and afterwards be came the major of the regiment. Having con tracted an illness which rendered him unfit for duty he resigned, and yesterday he and the person to whom he was indebted primarily for hia position aB major, were both drafted again. The CooPEHrsnpr Soldiers’ Home.—' The building situate at the corner of .Race and Crown Btreets was yesterflfty tianflefl overto tJie mana. t7“-“ ?f v??pff gn2i; BuMiem iiurno njr mg Medical BoaTd of the Q-ovemment. At » time When there were no military hospitals, the city of. Phila- , delphia authorities tendered the use of this building ’ to the Government. Now that there is ample hos pital convenience, the building at Race and Crown streets was of no practical use to the national au-: thorities. The personal or moveable pro-1 perty placed in the building by the Government, ; consisting of beds and-bedsteads, were put up at public sale yesterday, and knocked down at a very reasonable rate to the managers of the Home. The object' so long cherished by the Cooper-shop Com mittee is about to be put into practical effect, and we have no doubt that the institution will be so well supported by the people of this city as to be entirely creditable. All the soldiers have an excellent feel-' ing towards Philadelphia,*, and if Governor Curtin had thought it necessary, in the recent emergency, to call upon all :the Eastern States as well as New York and New Jersey, many thousands of stalwart men would have sprung to arms to fight for Penn sylvania, and particularly the great city of brotherly love. The work of fittiDg up the building at Race and Crown streets will be commenced at once. Arrival of Another Fine Prize.— The prize steamer Kate |Dale arrived at our navy yard at eleven o’clock yesterday morning, under the charge of Lieutenant McGill, of the United States navy. The rebel steamer had on board one thousand bales of cotton. She was captured by States gunboat Cuyler, while attempting to run the blockade at Mobile, a few days since. The Cuyler convoyed the prize as far up tbe Delaware as the Lazaretto. From that place to the navy yard the .steamer, came ex clusiveJy under the control of the lieutenant commanding. The captain, engineers, officers, and crew of the prize are prisoners. The rebel' steamer had the' traitors’ ensign dying, but over it the great and powerful American flag un furled itß beauty to the breeze. She was on the trip from Mobile to Havana when captured. We un derstand that.she was built for the cotton trade be tween Mobile and New Orleans, and had made seve ral trips in that capacity shortly before the com mencement of the rebellion. Y.” The bodies had been prepared for transportation, but by some means unknown they were left at the ddpot, probably under misapprehension; The friends of the deceased will receive all the information they desire by addressing Anthony Conradj the coroner of Philadelphia. .' . • • •; Reception ot the Blue Reserves.— The 2d Regiment of Reserve Brigade (Blue-Re serves), who enlisted fordhe defence of the State, will return to day. Their friends in the city will greet them with a warm reception, and will escort’ them from the cars, at West Philadelphia. The Henry Guard and'other military organizations will turn out upon the occasion. A beautiful stand of colors, the elegant manufacture of Messrs. Evans & Hassell, will be presented to the regiment by Mayor Henry; at Independence Square. Prize Fight.V-Two men named Dimond and McGonigle, said-to be expert demonstrators of the “ manly art,” engaged in a prize fight at an early hour yesterday morning, at a remote spot in the neighborhood of the Rope Ferry bridge, Schuylkill. The fight lasted two hours and fifteen minutes with unintermittent fury, and both combatants were so badly used up, that at; the close neither could find his eyes of so much service as to discern the material things about them. A large crowd of the most des gicable characters about town were witnesses of the Col. —The 34th Eeglinenk under command of Col. Albright, ia com* .posed as follows: Four companies from Mont gomery county, one partly from Montgomery and Chester counties, one from Northampton, one from Lehigh, one from Juniata, and two from Carbon county. This explanation isneceaeary from the fact thatit has been published in a number of news papers .that the: regiment was raised in Carbon county, . The Launch.—The launch' of the “Cuba” will come off this morning, at 9 o’clock, at the yard of Messrs. Neafie &. Levy. It will be one of the most attractive ship launches that have taken place outside the navy yard for many years. Death of a Centenarian.— Dinah Col-. lins, a colored woman, residing in Warnock street, above Jefferson, died yesterday, in the 103 d year of her. age. • A New Abmojiy. —Thenew armory of Alfred Jenks Si' Son, at Bridesburg, will be opened on "Wednesday afternoon next, and will be put into immediate service. THE P O LICE. [Before Mr. Judge Cadwalader. ] ■ Remanded. Captain John Benedict, JohnL. O’Neill, and John Moore alias Jacob Hyland, recently arrested by Col. li. Jackson Sherman, agent of the secret Bervice of the United States Government, were arraigned be fore Judge Cadwalader yesterday morning on' a writ of habeas corpus, for the purpose of being discharged upon, entering bail. • There were no witnesses ex amiocj, .Ths we at once rernamM tp y c Tr ]t t?wTj v&AwiniiiG inivQi [BfifoyS Mf. lld&Frn&ii BalHar-5 Francis Fetters (who has not long been out ol pri son) and William Slagle were arraigned at the Cen tral Station, yesterday afternoon, on the charge of burglary and larceny. The defendants were sur prised, between one and two o’clockyeßterdaymom-‘ ing, in the yard of the residence of Mr. r Lancaster, on Chelton avenue, near Germantown, by Officer Idell. There were three in the party,.but one es caped. During a short time past from fifteen to twenty robberies have been committed in and about Germantown. The house of Fetters was searched by Detective T*amon, who recovered a silver watch and chain and a linen handkerchief. This was marked J.M. McEdm. This gentlemen was called to the witness: Btand: He said that on last Monday or Tuesday morning the domestic on going into the kitohediliscoverea that the place had been forcibly entered and part of, a “wash” taken; among the pieces was the hand kerchief recovered by Officer Damon. The dwel lings of Mr. E. Smith, Joseph Howell,-and others in the vicinity were robbed within a few days. The defendants were committed in default, of $2,600 bail. We may here state that Fetters was.-recog 'nized by Detective Callananas an old thief, who had recently served out a term of four years for robberies, forty in number, committed in the upper rural aection of Philadelphia.- The other defendant is unknown to the police. He being caught on the premises where a burglary was about to be com mitted, will probably, authorize the authorities to have his photograph placed in.the.gallery. [Before Mi\ Alderman White. 3 . . Yes terday the sales of fish amounted to about five hun dred dollars, of which sum about forty dollars were missing. Mr. Mickle had his suspicion aroused, and made a direct charge upon Wilßon. The latter denied it in the most positive terms. Mr. Mickle said he would go after a police officer, and Wilson, becoming frightened, ran away. He was pursued and captured. On searching him, the officer found $l9. Some of the notes were identified by Mr. M.; one of them particularly, as having been taken by him several days since. He also identified a $5 treasury note; by a certain private mark upon it. This note had also been received in business by Mr. Mickle several dayb since. “ Well, Wilson, have you anything to Bay on this subject!” asked the alderman. * ' > u Well, sah, I guess dis chile has nauffin to say.” “How did the moneyget into your pocket!” ,c I guess I must put it ;thar, sir, for safe keepin’.” Well, Henry, you stand committed to answer at court; bail, $1,600. • ‘ Misdemeanor. About four weeks since an ill-looking man was pushed into, the street from a public house on Fifth street, below Walnut. He complained before Alder man White, who issued a warrant. The man had no money to pay for the serving of it, but the aider man stated that he would give it to an officer when he came. A well-known character, who has been in the hands of the police, as was subsequently ascer tained, volunteered; to serve the warrant without . pay, »b the poor fellow, as he called the prosecutor, had been very badly treated. • - r ; • : The alderman: handed him the'warrant, acid that THE PRESS.-PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, JULY 25, 1863. was the last he heard of itimtil yesterday morning,' The fellow gave the name of Toomson (he spells it without a p), The proprietor of the tavern testified that Thomson called’upon him with the warrant, and Baid that the case would be annoying to him, and suggested that for the sum of $3 he could get the prosecutor to settle it. The publican gave him the f s3. :In aday or two he again called upon the pilblioan and obtainad the warrant which he tore up, having received another dollar. A week or so after this he was arrested and taken before some other magistrate who hound him over to answer at court, Even after this Thomson called on the pub lican and said that it was an easy thing to have the matter settled by the payment of a little money. The publican, who by this time had found out that he had already been outrageously , imposed upon, had the, fellow arrested and takenbefore Alderman White, who committed him to answer for the meanor. . ‘ • A man, calling himself Jacob Smith, was arraigned on the charge of purloining $l9, belonging to a fellow- workman on the township line road. It seems that the loser had sdme money in his carpet bag, and several times missed small sums'of money from it, until the entire loss amounted to $ 19; The accused was committed, the alderman adjudging there was probable cause for the binding over of defendant. Isaac White, a colored man, was arraigned yester- * day morning on the charge of cutting a man named Smith, also colored. ;It seems that on Thursday night a quarrel ensued between the parties respect ing a woman. Jealousy waß aroused, and notwith standing the fact that,a colored man is soon'to be hung for killing an individual in a similar fight a few years since, yet White pulled a razor from his pocket and cut Smith in the Bide. He was com mitted to prison. PHILADELPHIA. BOARD OP TRADE. JAMES R. CAMPBELL, > 8. W. I>E COURSJBY, MJommittee of tub Montti. JAMES C. HAND.
