Henry Clay Beatty, who fell near Ball Bun on Paturday last, was a member of the bar in this city. Ile studied law in the office of the Hon. Charles Gibbons, and graduated in the law department of the University of Pennsylvania in the class of 1857. He at once own tneaced the practice of the law, and by his integrity, learning, and ability gained an enviable reputation, and gave promise of a successful professional career. Captain Beatty was a native of Bristbl, Bucks coating. On the breaking out of the war, he entered, as a first lieutenant, In a company formed in that county, and was soon after elected to the rank of captain. In tole capa. city be served in all the campaigns .of the Penneylvaula Reserves. Ho was present and participated in the battles before Richmond. At the beginning of these, oa Thars day, the 28th of June, he was in the hospital, but he im mediate!, joined his company. Oa Monday, the 80th, in the battle of White Oak 8 watallg (just two months before he finally fell) he received a severe, but noc d togerons wound Disabled by this, and Nuffering to his general health, he obtained leave of absence; but before his wound was entirely well, sr his health restored, he again joined his regiment, though his leave of absence had not expired. The deceased was a gallant soldier, and no. nobler spirit has been sacrificed in the cause of the Union. Northern Rome for Friendless Obildren" acknowledges the receipt of a donation in money from Annapolis, Md., in a note signed 44 Hanle." FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. THE • MONEY MARKET. PHILAMILPHIA, September 3, 1862 The stock and money circles were much excited to day, and although there was no panic, there was a great depression. On the street gold opened 'at 118% est.ll", rising to 118°118%. At the board 118% was paid for quite a large amount. The unfavorable news from our several armies is having its effect, and the markets are no longer buoyant. The rise in, gold mud be on purely speculative account, as none is required for European shipment or for home purposes. This is a matter of no surprise, as the currency market is affected entirely by the war news. Victory brings down the price of gold as surely as defeat advances it. The concentration of the Union armies in the neighborhood of Washington, and their consequent ability to make a powerful move when ever ills deemed neoessary to advance agatnst the rebels, must peon restore confidence. Our generals are waking up from the long list of errors which " - years of peace had fettered upon them, and now we, may expect that war will commence in earnest, and that terrible blows will be the result of this bloody regeneration 'of our*Northern armies. The specie market closed feverishly, at 118. 0:d de mands were firm at 107% 0108. The attention of capi allots has lately been much attracted to operations in wool, which" is now higher in price than it has been for forty-four years. The 'titmouse demand 'for army goods in 1881 used up not only lad year's clip but also the stock remeining on hand from former• years, and the mills which had been idle since the fall of 1880 com menced running to their utmost capacity on what are called by the trade "country goods." The stock on hendnow baying been much reduced, this description of goods has advaneed in price very handsomely, and is ooneennently a very profitable kind of work for the mills, especially as the demand created by the present pressing wants of the army will more than absorb the entire clip, and it is thought a deficiency will be noted before the supply is Wielded. Coarse wools have advancedfrom ten to twenty per cent , and a still further advance may be Looked for as the stock diminishes If the presenfaepect of war matters continues, operations in wool will certainly make a large return for the amount invested. Stooks were eagerly pressed On the market this morn. log, and a general desire to realize was manifest. The consequence was a tumble in the price of most stooks on the list. Government securities suffered severely. The size' of 1881 opened at 100, and declined before the close to 99X, with bids falling off another ; the total des. cline was 2X. In eleven-Melee there were no sales, the highest bid being 102 X, a decline of IX. There was considerable firmness in Reading Railroad bonds, which cannot be said of anything else on the list ; those of 1888 sold up to 91X, a considerable advance on yesterday's bid ;1870s advanced 1, with sites, while those of 1880 maintained the figures of yesterday.
