To the Editor` of Tito Press :
Fun : I noticed, In a late number of the Sunday
.Dispatch, a table giving the aggregate of the
:Union forces killed and wounded since the min
qneneement of the rebellion, and havis found in a
.acrap•beok a similar one, of twenty-four battles of
the Revolution, which, if you think pro"per, ycit
may give to your readers, who will take into con
sideration such pointa as may show them the differ
-ewes ami advantages of ancient and modern war
fare. I find the number of battles, according to
•the Dispatch, the same as those I give you annexed,
-of the Revolution, including what it terms skir

Hotrpital Mantaxement
To the .editor of The Press :
Stn : In the Evening Bulletin of the 18th I
observed an article over the signature of Twelfth
'Ward, staling that there is a rebel soldier at large
tin the hospital at the corner of Fifth and Button-
wood streets, neither sick nor wounded. Permit
me, through your pap er , to add a little to the his
tory. Be came here in attendance on a rebel lieu
tenant, who died after amputation of the leg, first
having made his will, bequeathing a large amount
of property to different rebels. (The soldier now
there passes under the name of Mustard, lint is
suspected of being abrother to the dead lieutenant.)
lot only is he at large in the hospital, partaking
dergely and freely of the delicacies so liberally be
itowed.by our patriotic ladies, intended by them
only for the Molt and mitering soldiers, but be has
been twice, certainly, and perhaps ofteuer, fur.
suiehed with passes, signed by different physicians
attached to the hospital, to enable him to peram
bulate our streets from 11 o'oluok A. M to 6 P. M.,
giving him the opportunity not only to esoape, but
to confer with some of the traitorous villains who,
I am sorry to say, are still to be found among us.
The writer of this called some time since at the
above-named institution with a Union soldier,.
whose papers were all in order, who had walked
from Doylestown, faint and hungry, with a heavy
knapsack on his back, on his way to join his regi
ment, and begged that he might be furnished with
a bed for the night, which favor was at first refused,
and only granted after much persuasion, and then
on Condition that he would call and take him away
early in the morning, which condition was com
plied with. The soldier is stilt lathe city, having
been detailed byis general in the regular army for
duty here, after a careful examination of his pa
pers, to whom his ease was made known. I enclose
you my card.
'Very truly, your obedient servant, D.

FINANCIAL AND. COMMERCIAL.
There wee a great excitement in gold to. day, with large
movements at advanced prices. The highest rate paid
was 8 per cent., which seems almost fabulous, when one
contretats the timer, as they now are, with the parked
which followed the euepenelon of the Bank of Pennsyl
vania, in '57. A few days only was gold as high se it
now le, and it soon sunk to 1 per cent , continuing to fell
steadily until the banks resumed. True, conslderahle
quantities of home securities are being shipped back to
us for realization, and London bank, re require the bard
oath, or good exchange; and am we have no goods or
prodnote to send them, gold noceeen‘ily honouree the me•
diem of exchange. Provided we can stand the drain
nutil foreign capitalists are satisfied that we can buy and ,
rev for our own paper, their anxiety must work to our
advantage.
The passage of the legal. tender bill by the House had
an exciting effect on the Millen market, and many begin
to look for a great Inflition in prices.. The feeling is bet
a temporary one, and the acknowledged ability of the
American Teeple to adapt tbemselvea to the circum
atances which surround them will undoubtelly lead
thew, after a day or two's reflection, to meet the cnr-
Teeny queetion bravely. The people feel the importance
of the Government, and will net willingly allow her
finances to be imprded if pereonal sacrifices can uphold
them. Prices at the Stock Board were somewhat firmer
to.day. Beading eecnrltiei were in active demand at
advanced figures; the abates opened at 28X, but sold up
to 19X, a alight advance also marking the closing bid ;
about 1,460 attires changed holders. The sixes of 1886

The New York Post of this evening says :
Tbe teadtng tonic of Wall street to-day is the farther
sudden advance in gold, the price touching 108 X, a rise
of 2 per cent. since yesterday morning. This ha, pro
duced greet excitement among the foreign bankers, and
rates of exchenge are Tory irregular and unsettled. .
The jump in gold to day is due almost entirely to the
ativictls from Washington relative to the legislation of
Cengrees on the finances There seem. to be little doubt
lint what the Treasury note bill will peas at desired by
Mr. Chase, and in the uncertaioties of the future which
it opens up, the public very naturally look around for a
little of the "real "article." And we ventnre to say that
the early advocates of an Indiscriminate issue of paper
money are among the first to scramble for gold, and are
not tempted to Pell by the present hish rates. As much
as 108 X wee paid, clueing at 1011%a108%.
The foreign exchange drawers were offering to sell

as the price of gold was announced from the Board of
