Ilessa:wrisoo. Hotrpital Mantaxement To the .editor of The Press : Stn : In the Evening Bulletin of the 18th I observed an article over the signature of Twelfth 'Ward, staling that there is a rebel soldier at large tin the hospital at the corner of Fifth and Button- wood streets, neither sick nor wounded. Permit me, through your pap er , to add a little to the his tory. Be came here in attendance on a rebel lieu tenant, who died after amputation of the leg, first having made his will, bequeathing a large amount of property to different rebels. (The soldier now there passes under the name of Mustard, lint is suspected of being abrother to the dead lieutenant.) lot only is he at large in the hospital, partaking dergely and freely of the delicacies so liberally be itowed.by our patriotic ladies, intended by them only for the Molt and mitering soldiers, but be has been twice, certainly, and perhaps ofteuer, fur. suiehed with passes, signed by different physicians attached to the hospital, to enable him to peram bulate our streets from 11 o'oluok A. M to 6 P. M., giving him the opportunity not only to esoape, but to confer with some of the traitorous villains who, I am sorry to say, are still to be found among us. The writer of this called some time since at the above-named institution with a Union soldier,. whose papers were all in order, who had walked from Doylestown, faint and hungry, with a heavy knapsack on his back, on his way to join his regi ment, and begged that he might be furnished with a bed for the night, which favor was at first refused, and only granted after much persuasion, and then on Condition that he would call and take him away early in the morning, which condition was com plied with. The soldier is stilt lathe city, having been detailed byis general in the regular army for duty here, after a careful examination of his pa pers, to whom his ease was made known. I enclose you my card. 'Very truly, your obedient servant, D. LETTER leßti m NE W l ORR (Correspondence of The Pleas ) New YORK, Jima 24,1882. The highest rate paid was 8 per cent., which seems almost fabulous, when one contretats the timer, as they now are, with the parked which followed the euepenelon of the Bank of Pennsyl vania, in '57. A few days only was gold as high se it now le, and it soon sunk to 1 per cent , continuing to fell steadily until the banks resumed. True, conslderahle quantities of home securities are being shipped back to us for realization, and London bank, re require the bard oath, or good exchange; and am we have no goods or prodnote to send them, gold noceeen‘ily honouree the me• diem of exchange. Provided we can stand the drain nutil foreign capitalists are satisfied that we can buy and , rev for our own paper, their anxiety must work to our advantage. The passage of the legal. tender bill by the House had an exciting effect on the Millen market, and many begin to look for a great Inflition in prices.. The feeling is bet a temporary one, and the acknowledged ability of the American Teeple to adapt tbemselvea to the circum atances which surround them will undoubtelly lead thew, after a day or two's reflection, to meet the cnr- Teeny queetion bravely. The people feel the importance of the Government, and will net willingly allow her finances to be imprded if pereonal sacrifices can uphold them.
