THE OUTBREAK OE THE HOB.
{From the Cincinnati Commercial.]
The Opera Bouse was last night densely filled with
Jadiea and gentlemen, forming an a.u<lieuce tut highly in

■in the city. There were, however, swtne hundreds of
the worst specimens of our population, who obcaiaed
. admittance with tickets purchased wi'h money
raised for the express purpose of instigating
a tuob. The sum raised is sain to have been ono
hhlldv?4 aod twenty-five dollars, with which five hun
dred Tivkcts were procured and given away, principally
lo the frequenters of low doggeries. It is believed taat
the subscribers to this fund can be named, and they can
be marked with the brand of infamy.
Mr. Phillips was introduced by Judge Stallo, and pro
ceeded to speak in substance aa he did last week in
‘Washington, lie regarded the question oe proposed to
discuss as of primary importance to the American people.
We were undergoing a trial (hat no people had ever es
caped, and that we could not bnve escaped in tbe nature of
things. We were in the midst of a war of ideas. The
•wßr’wa* between an aristocracy ana the ilumociacy of the
> country, and one or the other must conquer. We might
consider ourselves fortunate if our children saw jus
tice established aud peace prevailing all over the
land. As an anti-slavery man he had no interest in
the war. Slavery bad received its death blow, and not
at the hands of the people of anti-slavery priuci
p’es. These and similar propositions were svtranced
in plain terms, and with forcible illustrations; and
acme of their logical consequences were presented, with
out extravagance in denunciation of anybody, or epi
thets that weie offensive. Mr. Pniilios stated in so
■ many words that he was an Abolitionist, and that he had
for fiiteen years b* en a disuoh»i*ist« but now lie was sa
tisfied that the Union meant justice to nl. men and rac«-a,
and he was for it—for the measures that in his opinion
were essential to its safety.
At one of his trenchaut observations there was some
applause in the body of the audience, followed by leasing
and hooting irtuu the loobies and the gallery, and a stone
smd several esgg were thrown from the gallery at tko
speaker.' The stone crashed against the shade of a light
at Mr. Phillips 1 foot, and one or two ot the eggs struck
‘he skirt of his coat, breaking and smearing it and drip
ping upon the stage.
The excitement was. of course, very great. Many geti
■ Hellish sprang to their feet and demanded that the perpe
trators be put out. The villains wore dared to make
themselves known, and inquiries were made as to who
• Lad lliroa’i the stor e and eggs. A voice declared that,
•whether truthfully or not, we do not know, that “ Bart
Smith ’* was the individual.
The speaker firmly ttood his ground, and his steady
• voice presently quieied the tumult. There was no further
disturbance for nearly half an hour, but at a r-terence to
the enirlojmcnt of the poor, ignorant whites of the South
tools ot the despotism that was warring upon the
libeitits of the nation, there was another uproar,
and auclher shower of eggs, mostly striking near
the speaker, and one or two spattering his pereou.
B o riiOM < d good pluck, however, and though i was mani

cline in iho Western stocks. Some attribute this chauge
in the market to fears about the Merrimac, but the true
explanation, no doubt, is the sluggish condition of the
grnti murkeM hero mid at tho West, sort the congmuant
lulling ofi in the earnings of the linos centering at Uhi
cago.
The Galena and Chicago and Chicago and Bock Islaud
railroads are among the first to feel the stagnation in
breao&tulls and show its effects in their traffic returns.
The Galena gives a decrease on the third week of Hirch
of slu, ooo, tho Bock Island $7,000. The decline in grain
in this market sinco Fobruary is as follows:
February. March.
Hilwauhie club wheat. SI 38 81 28
Western mixed corn 69 58
Jltm* 6 00 5 25
The course of the receipts of grain at Chicago a? 6
watched very closely by thu grain speculators, who are
losing heavily. The losses iu Liverpool are also large,
and not much recovery in prices is looked for on the other
tide iu face of the large shipments arriving ont. An un
favorable change of weather in England would at once
stimulate the Liverpool market, and in turn infuse new
life into the movement from the West to our seaboard.
The Government list does not sympathise with tbe
weakness in shares, or, rather, the shares do not respond
to tho confident fusling in Governments, for it has Oeon a
peculiarity of the market for several weeks past, that, as
soon as business on the railroad stocks opens, extreme
apatby prevails, the orders of tbe commission houses
befog chielly for the long Bixes and fives.
Government sixes of 1881 close at
couptitt?, and 94^94f0r tho rogiotureri, with lass eagar
need to buy than at any time of the past fortnight."
The 7-30 treasury notes are iiuiet, at 99/£&lG0. The
willingness of Mr. Chase to meet the demand at par has
somewhat dampened the ardor ot buyers.
Thu decliuu is heaviest in Erie Preferred, Cleveland

storks which stand steady arc Prairie du Chien, Cleve
land and Pittsburg, and Columbus and Cincinnati.

The Da«k Days and Great Perils of
Washington* City —This celebrated lecture, by the Rev.
C. M. Butler, I> r., is to be delivered iu Concert Hall,
on Monday evening, April 7th, for the especial benefit of
a very umJiil mission of tho Episcopal Church. It Is of
fered instead of the one-dollar subscription Bystom. Tho
object is to pay off the entire floating debt of the Church,
whir) will lie secured, if there is a generous response on
the part of tho Church and tho public. The suggestion
or the tubscription was made by Bishop Potter, and ori
ginated In the Board of Missions The interest of tliO
subject, the ability of the reverend lecturer, and the im
portance of tho object, with tho high source trom which
ii emanated, all conspire to giro promise and character
to the o"cnMnu. >Vo trust tho ample halt will be filled
to its utmost capacity by tills Christian and patriotic
community. We advise all to secure tickets immediately.
Iceland Moss Paste for Colds.—The de
licious Iceland Moss Paste, manufactured and sold by
Jflp. A. L. Vansant, Ninth and Chestnut streets, is an
excellent remedy for colds on the chest, sore throat, etc.
Mr. Yansant's Coufectious are the finest and purest
manufactured in this country, and his prices are re
markably moderate.
Stirring JfEws Expected.—The continual
silence respecting the movement j of the main body of the
army of the Potomac is ominous. It is certain that move*
rneuts of the greatest importance are being made. Within
a few days stirring .news will be along; but, in the in
terim, we would advise all loyal citizens to visit tho
Mammoth Clothing Depot of Granville Stokes, No. 655
'Chestnut street, where SpriDg garments of the latest
styles are being disposed of daily at greatly rodaced
prices.
The Tax Bill.— The consideration of tho
tax MU now before Congress is deaaonstrailng the fact
that everybody is patriotical’y willing that a hoavy tvx
should be levied upon everybody but himself; while tbe
eaid everybody insists that, in his special case, taxation
would be oppressively burdensome. That ia not the way
to help the Government to carry on the war and crush
out the rebellion. Let each man pay up his taxes cheer
fully and willingly, and, if he feels the necessity of re
trenchment} let him consult true economy, and buy His
wearing apparel at tho Browa Stone Clothing Hall of
Bf-ckhilJ & Wilson, Nos. 603 and 605 Chestnut street,
above Sixth.
Fatality of Uniforms.— lt would appear,
from numerous observations made by military writers,
that Foldierß are hit during battle, according to tko color
of their dress; in the following order: Red, the most
fat'd; the least fatal, Austrian gray. The proportions
ore: Red, 12; rifle green, 7; brown, 6; Austrian bluish
gray, 5. Tims we see how unwise has been the adoption
of the gay and faucifui uniforms by some of our regi
ments at the commencunenl of tho war. Of course, it is
only necessary to consult these statistics in reference to
our dross as soldiers; but, as civilians, we are only influ
enced by taste. Beautiful garments, of all shades of
colors, and 6f all descriptions, for Spring wear, are now
offeree at Oharleß Stokes’ “ One Price,* ! under the Con
tinental, at remarkably low prices.
