THE Nerrzwo SEASON.—The nutting season tan be eaidtohavejust commenced. More than a month wince, it is tine, walnuts were being largely gathered in the rural sections, but they had not Then atMincd their run maturity, and were mostly procured by bousekeeP ars for pickling. The walnut, from time immemorial, lies been held in the highest estimation. It was called lby the Bemuses JoriS plane (the acorn or mast of Jove), Ind hence the mama Jai/Sans, or walnut tree. In all sections of the State, but particularly in the 'vici nity of Philadelphia and Allegheny county, the yield of thertauts, this fall, promises to be immense. Euro Quantities are now being gathered, and either put up for home consumption, or shipped abroad. In the interior, they are retailed at six cents per quart. The retail trade of this city is mostly monopolized by natives of bunny Italy, whose business penchant seems to confine Itself to roasted chestnuts, plaster caste, and hand-organs. Rite chestnut of this country is smaller and sweeter than that of Spain, and comes most extensively into vogue &long with the festivities of Hallow Eve. Seamus may be said to be in season «all the year Mud." They have hitherto been raised in large quan tities in 'North Carolina, and one or two other Southern states. Notnitlmianding the closing of their ports, Phi- Ukiah% is still supplied with the article, and prices have hot materially advanced. This is owing to the fact that peanuts are also largely grown and exported from South America. The chinquapin (what wrangling its 'orthography has lbeeasioned !) is a small sweet-flavored nut, and hereto lore has been imported to some extent from the South. It can be grown perhaps equally well in the 'herder Mates. however, in that we shall not Coffer ranch for the want of it. Sheilbarks and hickory-nuts have now attained their lull growth, and .11noying obduracy of shell, and are gradually rowing into meket. CUBIOI'A AeClDENT.—Yestnrtin7 Morning, about one o'clock-, an accident of an unusual nature occurred at the Baltimore railroad depot, at the foot of ashington strews. Extract from the Preface: The Committee upon a .National Hymn placed some of the "mast meritorious" and otherwise " noticeable " songs received by them in the hands of Messrs. RUDD Is CARLETON for publication under my editorial care. There were very few of these—not thirty, all told—and those which were remarkable for lyric excellence were gradually so reduced in numbers by the withdrawal of manuscripts by their authcire s that, after a while, the original project was abandoned. "But although the notion of publishing the projected volume was, therefore, given up, it was afterwards thought by some of those who had been interested in the undertaking that some discussion of the subject of na tional hymns, with an account of the origin and proceed ings of the Committee in question, illustrated by songs selected in part from those which bad been left at the disposal of the Committee ‘eould be acceptable to many persons , and, therefore, I have given a few days to the preparation of this little book. For it I only am re- Sponsible." This is the only volume upon the subject of National Hymns with which Mr. White has authorized the con nection of his name.
